The storm surge was nothing I have seen in my lifetime in Pinellas County, Florida, USA.
As of 7:25pm EST Seotember 28. 2024, there are lines of traffic trying to return to their homes on the barrier islands. The power company is working 24/7 to return service to folks without power.

Thank God the fatalities were low.
However, the stress for so many is in the beginning stages. Pleaae keep all affected by Hurricane Helene in your heart and prayer.

Good morning! We know right now those flooded streets may look, to some, like a lot of fun for a little ol' splish splash. Heck, you might EVEN see some TV news crews doing it. Don't be like those TV news crews; they're modeling some pretty dumb and dangerous behavior. Here are four compelling reasons not to walk through storm surge.

1. That's not only rainwater. It has water that's flooded the storm sewers, which includes all sort of runoff. It may also include 💩 from dogs, boats whose blackwater tank's integrity has been compromised, and 🤮 from whomever had too much to drink at O'Maddy's last night.

2. ⌁ Downed power lines. There may be downed power lines that you cannot see. If those power lines are live, you're not going to be. As the USGS says, "pure water is an excellent insulator and does not conduct electricity. The thing is, you won't find any pure water in nature, so don't mix electricity and water."

3. Manholes! If a manhole cover or runoff grate isn't where it's supposed to be 🕳️, you can fall IN that hole. At BEST you will probably break something on your person that you really prefer not broken. At WORST you will drown.

4. If anything bad does happen, those waters are in an area that's been evacuated. That means no one is coming to save you.

The good news is, you can have ALL THE FUN of walking through storm surge without the danger by watching our web cams. So go ahead, grab a cup of coffee, stay safe, and watch the storm surge from (what we hope is) a safe and elevated distance. Let's hope Helene doesn't kill anyone.
