New in Poetry World #4:

Udoka
by acilegnA
(Lagos, Nigeria)

Udoka was nicknamed, "the parrot." He would talk and talk till your ears fell out.

The entire village avoided him. A simple "good morning" could end up being a three-hour conversation on anything. From why the sun was not as hot as the day before, to how he felt the akaraseller adds garri in her beans so it swells to become more, to how the rain fall did not fall as hard as it did the previous time.

Questions and Wishes

by Alozie Chigozirim Ekene
(Lagos, Nigeria)

Tell me something dear,
Are you tired of everything in this world?
And are you still trying to fill that void?
Or is there something that you're searching for?
Have you been longing for change?
Yet everything seems to remains the same?
It seems to you like you're nowhere near the shallows,
So deep and far back, you can't even notice your own shadow.

You turn a blossoming house of coral beads

To one stocked with knives and spikes

Break in, Transmission!
Transmission is a burglar
Cracking through the windows of routine
Inputting and displaying
Broken news on untampered screens
Tonight

Mood Trips

by Molokwu Dayan

I want to sing about loneliness,
The lyrics clear on my tear tracks,
My voice wobbling with every sorrow on pitch,
My lungs filled with sadness,
So my breath is a whistle.

45 Poems of Protest: The Pandemic

The Birth of a New Song is Now

by Blessing Omeiza Ojo
(Abuja, Nigeria)

Who taught birds how to sing? I don't know.
Life is a miracle: how birds strung songs
with sweet serene melodious tone and flap
their wings as backups, painting the world
into a nirvana. There's a bird in my mother's neck.
Those glorious days, she flew it and our room
became colourful so much that every thing
you touch becomes a rainbow.
