What do butterflies symbolise for you?

Recently I've been reading around the Tochmarc Étaine.

Étaín is a beautiful women and who Midir falls in love with, Unfortunately, he already has a wife Fúamnach in her rejection she casts a series of spells.

First Fúamnach turns Étaín into a pool of water, then into a worm, (in some versions a snake) and then into a beautiful scarlet fly (in some versions a butterfly).

Some friends and I have been discussing the relationship between anger, revenge, knee jerk reactions and transformation.

Butterflies and their transformation have always symbolised hope for me, no matter what you are going through, when you feel cocooned in darkness you can be transformed into something beautiful.

However there are multitudes of symbolic meanings for butterflies, what do they mean to you?
