In 2008, I started working part-time as a tour guide while studying for my Diploma in Civil Engineering at that time.

Tom was my manager at that time. My job is not only to bring Japanese for a tour in Kuching but also to arrange for a short English course where they will learn English at a private school for a short period and at the same time meet up with local people so that they can practice using English.

I spoke Japanese with my customer while working as a tour guide. If there are words that I don't know, I will use a Japanese electronic dictionary to search for the term. (There were no smartphones at that time where you could easily translate languages)

Did you know that in Japan, although they learn Japanese at school, they don't really use it because everyone uses Japanese in Japan, including English teachers?

I started learning Japanese in early 2017. We were taught by Tom Morioka, who taught us Japanese that year.

My friends and I become good friends with Tom. So it's a two-way learning process where I practice my Japanese with him, and he practices his English with my friends and me.

In December 2007, I took my first N4 exam in Singapore.

After a year of learning Japanese, I could listen to and speak the basic Japanese language.

I was 19 years old at that time.

The Port of Kobe is a Japanese maritime port in Kobe, Hyogo.

Did you know that on January 17, 1995, an earthquake occurred in the Southern Part of Hyogo Prefecture measuring 6.9 magnitudes of earthquake known as the Great Hanshin Earthquake?

You can learn more about earthquakes at The Earthquake Memorial Museum, part of the Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution (人と防災未来センター, Hito to Bōsai Mirai Center).

I visited there but did not manage to take pictures.

A trip to Hiroshima.

A must visit place, the Miyajima Island

Itsukushima, also known as Miyajima, is a small island in Hiroshima Bay, western Japan. It is known for its forests and ancient temples. Just offshore, the giant, orange Great Torii Gate is partially submerged at high tide. It marks the entrance to the Itsukushima Shrine, which was first built in the 12th century. Nearby, the Museum of History and Folklore has cultural artifacts in a 19th-century merchant's home.

Hiroshima (広島市, Hiroshima-shi, is the capital of Hiroshima Prefecture in Japan. As of June 1, 2019, the city had an estimated population of 1,199,391.

Hiroshima was founded in 1589 as a castle town on the Ōta River delta. Following the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Hiroshima rapidly transformed into a major urban center and industrial hub. In 1889, Hiroshima officially gained city status

Hiroshima was the first city targeted by a nuclear weapon. This occurred on August 6, 1945, at 8:15 a.m., when the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) dropped the atomic bomb "Little Boy" on the city. Most of the city was destroyed, and by the end of the year between 90,000 and 166,000 had died as a result of the blast and its effects.

As a Muslim, I get the chance to visit one of the oldest mosques in Kobe, the Kobe Masjid (神戸モスク, Kōbe Mosuku), also known as Kobe Muslim Masjid (神戸ムスリムモスク, Kōbe Musurimu Mosuku), was founded in October 1935 in Kobe and is Japan's first masjid. Its construction was funded by donations from the Islamic Committee of Kobe from 1928 until its opening in 1935.

The mosque was confiscated by the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1943. However, it continues to function as a mosque today. It is located in the Kitano-Cho foreign district of Kobe. The mosque survived the air raids that laid waste to most of Kobe's urban communities in 1945 and was able to endure the Great Hanshin earthquake in 1995. The mosque is located in one of Kobe's best-known tourist areas, which features many old western-style buildings.

The best place for tourists in Kyoto?

It will be the Kiyomizu-Dera (Japanese: 清水寺) a Buddhist temple located in eastern Kyoto, Japan. The temple is part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Kyoto, Uji, and Otsu Cities) UNESCO World Heritage site.

The popular expression "to jump off the stage at Kiyomizu" is the Japanese translation of the English expression "to take the plunge". This refers to an Edo-period tradition that held that if one were to survive a 13-meter (43-foot) jump from the stage, one's wish would be granted. During the Edo period, 234 jumps were recorded, and of those, 85.4% survived. The practice was prohibited in 1872

Back in the summer of 2012, I stayed in Osaka, Japan for almost 3 months.

Stayed in Rinku Town, connected to Kansai International Airport by a bridge over Osaka Bay, cosmopolitan Rinku Town is a vibrant residential, industrial, and commercial hub drawing tourists to huge shopping centers such as Rinku Premium Outlets &Rinku Pleasure Town Seacle with its gigantic Ferris wheel.

Did you know that you can go to Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, and Himeji via Shin-Osaka Station?

It is hard to describe Osaka in just one word. But this is not to say it is just another Tokyo. Osaka radiates its own charm and deserves to be loved for many reasons.

From the majestic Osaka Castle to Universal Studios Japan, shopping at Shinsaibashi to cafe-hopping at Orange Street, Instant Ramen Museum to Osaka Central Fish Market, the list goes on..

Odaiba, Tokyo 2012 & 2018

A must-visit place in Tokyo. Odaiba (お台場) today is a large artificial island in Tokyo Bay, Japan, across the Rainbow Bridge from central Tokyo.

In Odaiba, you can visit DiverCity Tokyo Plaza. It features attractions related to the Gundam anime series, including a large, "life-size" Gundam statue in front of the building.

Did you know that Odaiba was initially built in this area for defensive purposes in the 1850s? Reclaimed land offshore Shinagawa was dramatically expanded during the late 20th century as a seaport district and has developed since the 1990s as a major commercial, residential, and leisure area.

Odaiba was one of the venues for the 2020 Summer Olympics. The events to be held there included beach volleyball at Shiokaze Park, triathlon and marathon swimming at Odaiba Marine Park, and gymnastics at a new gymnastics venue.
