Nifrost's third full length album "Orkja" offers a well thought out mix of black, folk, and viking metal, with some post-metal elements, played and produced to a very high standard. Unfortunately the music becomes a bit too experimental in style just about halfway, which usually limits my listening session to the first three excellent tracks. The vinyl edition offers a very complete package with a very good looking blue marbled disc.

Marbled light Blue Vinyl, 180g, limited to 100 copies, with 12 page A5 booklet and poster. Released by Dusktone.

Undoubtedly Dimmu Borgir's most controversial release, their tenth studio album Eonian provoked very polarized responses from fans and reviewers. While I still think their previous album Abrahadabra (2010) is their best release, I am enjoying Eonian because it is quite similar in style, however they went a bit too far with the choirs and orchestrations. This vinyl version features an amazing foil-printed cover and a 28-page full size booklet.

At first sight an unobtrusive released, charmed by an amateurish but cult-like cover, one man black metal act Moldé Volhal from Norway brings high quality black metal, high in speed and melody. For me this is a nice little album I can listen to at any time. This vinyl release on the other hand is basic but I see the value going up in the future if the band releases more music.

Beneath The Great Sky of Solitude is the debut album of DUSK IN SILENCE, an Indonesian based one man black metal band. The six tracks display a harmonious blend of melodic and atmospheric black metal. The vinyl jacket is nicely layed out, but the color of the vinyl itself is too far removed from the pre-release mockups.

Five years after their black metal debut The Dreaming I, Akhlys returns with this new nightmarish composition, more dark and haunting than before. The sound is heavier, more refined and unique, the art style is dramatic and opening the gatefold seems to suck the light from the immediate surroundings. And to top it all off the vinyl itself looks amazing.

Ratings: music 4.5/5, vinyl 4.5/5 = total 9/10.

Quickly after the release of their 2015 debut album Devotion to Lord, Russian atmospheric black metal band Grima has risen above their peers, recently releasing their fourth album: Rotten Garden. Although very similar in sound and style to their 2019 album Will of the Primordial, they keep on improving and bring the listener deep into the Siberian wilderness.

After some lineup changes, Sojourner now tests the water with their new band members: together with a new female vocalist (Lucia Amelia Emmanueli), bass player (Scotty Lodge), the band now also adds clean male vocals to the repertoir with Tom O'Dell, who also plays the guitar. The result is a two song EP which sounds a lot like the material on their last album, Premonitions from 2020. The total running time of 12m30 is on the shorter side, and the vinyl release lacks any kind of protective sleeve. But the awesome artwork and top quality music turns this into a real collection piece for any Sojourner fan like myself!

With a core of ferocious and dynamic drumming, agonizing vocals performed with full dedication, topped up with layers of precise guitar work, GAEREA's Limbo is one of my favorites from 2020. I was initially put off by the cover art and the "yet another masked band" aspect, but after getting into their music, I become to realize this is all very well complemented.

Second Press limited to 350 copies on white and yellow mixed vinyl.

Akhlys - The Dreaming I: Do you know that unpleasant feeling when you wake up in the middle of the night after a really bad dream, but you can't put your finger on what the nightmare was about, except that it was something really horrible? Well this album gives you the exact same feeling, if you give it enough of your attention. Definitely not chill background music, but a whole new dimension of black metal.

Immortal - Battles In The North: my album of choice from the mid-ninentiens Norwegian black metal scene, and one of my all-time favorites, of course fueled by a good dose of nostalgia. Osmose Productions does a great job constantly repressing these classics on vinyl, this white variant suits the album art perfectly!

Drawing their inspiration from the burning of the Notre Dame de Paris, French black metallers SETH deliver a top quality album which has something in there for every black metal fan. La Morsure Du Christ is also released on some good looking vinyl variants, of which this stained glass version is the most exclusive.
