Okowa advocates for judicial autonomy, independence

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State and Vice Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday called for financial autonomy and independence of the judiciary.

Okowa who in his keynote address at the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, Section on Legal Practice, SLP, 2022 Annual Conference in Asaba, with the theme: “Legal Practice in Nigeria: Our Reality, Our Future,” insisted that there cannot be effective rule of law in Nigeria when the judiciary does not have financial autonomy.

He said the NBA leadership deserved commendations for its continued fight for the rule of law and holding the executive arm of government accountable to the principles of fairness, equity, and justice, adding that his administration would continue to support financial autonomy for the state judiciary and the legislative arm.

Atiku commiserates with the victims of terrorist attack on Niger and Taraba communities

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the erstwhile Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar (GCON), the Wazirin of Adamawa has expressed his sympathy for the victims of the recent act of terrorism carried out by bandits that claimed many lives of civilians as well as military personnel in Niger and Taraba communities.

In a terse statement via his Twitter handle, he expressed his worry over the incidents and his displeasure over the authorities inability to stem this ugly security trend that has bedevilled the nation while he commiserated with the victims' families.

The full text of the Twitter message is as follows:

"The attacks in Niger and Taraba states that led to the loss of scores of lives of soldiers, police personnel and civilians are worrisome. This is yet another attack that further exposes how vulnerable we are.

My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased, even as I condole with the Nigerian military and the Nigerian Police."
