Mekatilili wa Menza was a prophetess and fearless warrior who led her people, the Giriama, to rebel against British imperialism. Born in the 1860s, she is remembered for slapping a British colonial administrator after disagreement over their imperialist policies and attempts to subdue them.

Mekatilili wa Menza the Mother of resistance, a heroine from Kenya, who rebelled and fought the colonial invaders.

Felicien Kabuga, an alleged financier of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, will go on trial in The Hague on September 29 facing charges of genocide and crimes against humanity, a UN judge announced Thursday.

Once one of Rwanda's richest men, Kabuga allegedly helped set up hate media that urged ethnic Hutus to “kill Tutsi cockroaches” and funded militia groups.

A Jamaican legislator is asking the country's parliament to name reggae legend Bob Marley a national hero, an effort that comes amid rising nationalism in English-speaking Caribbean countries that are distancing themselves from their colonial past.

The proposal by lawmaker Lisa Hanna would make the iconic singer a national hero, a title already held by seven Jamaicans including Black nationalist leader Marcus Garvey and the nation's first prime minister Alexander Bustamante.

It comes months after Barbados bestowed a similar honor on pop singer Rihanna during a November ceremony in which the island severed its ties to the British monarchy and created a republic - a process Jamaica is also considering.

" Bob Marley deserves that recognition because he lived a very short life that transformed the thinking of people around the world," Hanna told Reuters in an interview at her Kingston office.

It is not immediately evident when parliament will vote on the measure. Hanna hopes it will be approved in time for the 60th anniversary of the country's independence on Aug 6.

Marley was born in 1945 in the rural parish of St. Ann to a white English father and a Black Jamaican mother.

When he was 12, he moved to Trench Town in Kingston, where he and musicians Bunny wailer king of reggae and Peter Tosh developed what would become a globally recognized reggae sound. Marley died in 1981 of melanoma, a form of skin cancer.

His rise to fame helped create a positive image for Jamaica, which at the time was beset by deep political division that played out in violent street confrontations and shootouts between gangs of opposing ideologies.

"It was the possibility that Jamaica could actually have a superstar in the middle of the poverty and the violence," said Matthew Smith, a Jamaican historian at the University College of London.

Marcia Griffiths Fanpage, who sang for years with Marley, including on classic tracks such as "No Woman, No Cry," also supports Hanna's proposal.

"Bob is a legend and an icon who has done so much for the entire world," she said in an interview.

"The power and the force of music can change the world, and that is why God gave us a man like Bob."

The 369th fought so hard and with such tenacity that they were dubbed "The Harlem Hellfighters" by the German troops they faced. The 369th became the first American unit to be cited with the French Croix de Guerre. One medal of honor and many Distinguished Service Crosses were awarded to members of the regiment.

When white units leaving New York for Europe embarked upon their ships mid great fanfare and marching bands, this was not the case for the Harlem Hellfighters, an issue that plagued the soldiers during their entire tour. But underlying that theme was the fact that the 369th had to train with second-hand uniforms and broomsticks as rifles.

When they were shipped off to Spartanburg, SC, for basic training, they were verbally assaulted and often physically attacked by groups of white townsfolk who resented their presence there. They were ordered not to strike back in self defense and had to rely upon the conscience of fellow white soldiers to intervene when they were attacked. The 369th was told if a single complaint was lodged against the unit, the regiment would be disbanded and they would never get the change to fight overseas.

As the war ground on, the 369th would emerge as the unit that spent the longest time in combat and would become the most decorated combat unit in the field. But the mere appearance of the 369th was confusing beyond the fact that the unit was black. Members of the 369th were issued French helmets and belts and attached to French regiments. The dramatic scenes drawn by Artist Canaan White accurately depict the "look" of these black heroes while dramatically depicting their valor and struggle in illustrations that capture each moment of action in uncanny ways.

Chinua Achebe at his house in Enugu, Nigeria. 1959

He is one of Africa's most acclaimed authors and considered by some to be the father of modern African literature. His early novels, including the groundbreaking Things Fall Apart (1958) and No Longer at Ease (1960), describe poignantly the effects of European colonialism on Igbo society, Nigeria, and newly independent African nations.

He taught at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (1976-81), and was founding editor (1971) of the influential journal Okike. Achebe returned to the novel form with Anthills of the Savannah (1987). He has also written numerous short stories, children's books, and a book of essays, Home and Exile (2000), reflecting on his and his nation's coming of age.
