"When traditional hypercars start to tire, Aston Martin Valkyrie is just getting into its stride."

Product Planning Leader at Aston Martin, Sam Bennet, speaks about the hypercar that has rewritten what is possible, the Aston Martin Valkyrie.

Q. What makes the Valkyrie concept stand out in Aston Martin’s roster? And the automotive sector as a whole?

A. Aston Martin Valkyrie is like nothing that has come before, it is a hyper car that takes all known limits of road car performance and transcends beyond all expectations. When traditional hypercars start to tire, Aston Martin Valkyrie is just getting into its stride. Conceived as a unique joint venture between Aston Martin and Red Bull Advanced Technologies, this is the brainchild of two mastermind designers in their respective fields. Adrian Newey, the most successful designer of Formula 1™ cars in the history of the sport and our very own Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman. The goal of this project, to achieve the impossible. A dream which has been made a reality resulting in a fully homologated, road legal road car, capable of lapping a circuit faster than any road car seen to date. Aston Martin Valkyrie is the lightest, strongest, fastest, and most aerodynamically effective masterpiece of its kind.

Q. How many years has the Valkyrie been in the making? Was there any reason for its original inception?

A. Adrian Newey is a racing car designer with a record unapproached in the modern era. Throughout his career he always dreamt of designing a road car, but it wasn’t until 2016 when the opportunity presented itself in the form of a joint venture with an existing exclusive car manufacturer. Experts in the industry, British, steeped in racing history and with one of the most coveted brands of any kind, Aston Martin was the natural choice. Working with our Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman, Aston Martin Valkyrie was sketched out in a way unlike that of any other road car. First came the cockpit, kept narrow for aerodynamic efficiency. The seating position would be fixed and reclined to keep the occupant’s knees and feet up, to
optimise the air flow over and, more importantly still, under the car. Then came the engine: a naturally aspirated V12. The inherently balanced V12 would allow the perfect configuration and provide a soundtrack to do full justice to the power it dispensed and the brand it bore.

To enhance the ground-breaking concept even further, it was decided that the V12 be boosted by a fully integrated hybrid electric drive both to provide additional power at all engine speeds and facilitate smoother, faster gear changes, as well double as a starter motor, alternator and reverse gear, saving weight, space and complexity.

Q. What makes the design of the Valkyrie so unique?

A. Aston Martin Valkyrie was designed like a Formula 1™ car, whose true pace is predominately determined by the amount and nature of the aerodynamic downforce it can produce. Aerodynamics and its effects have been considered at every single moment of the car’s design and done in such a way that is simply unprecedented among any road legal machines.

It is easy to see the sleek shape and watch the front and rear active aerodynamic devices at work, but the drive to develop unheard of levels of downforce runs far deeper than that. At the most fundamental level, Aston Martin Valkyrie can be viewed as a single aerodynamic surface, using in reverse the same forces that lifts an aircraft into the sky to clamp it firmly to the ground. The cockpit has a teardrop shape to maximise aerodynamic efficiency and is kept as narrow as possible to minimise drag, while retaining optimum levels of occupant comfort. Inside you sit reclined with your knees and feet elevated so as not to interrupt the all-important flow of air under the car. Beneath the body the underside of Aston Martin Valkyrie, there are two large venturi tunnels feeding air to the massive rear diffuser.
The suspension has been shaped and positioned to allow free flow of air past it, the gearbox has been designed to be tall and narrow for the same reason. Even the wheels have been specifically designed for maximum aerodynamic efficiency and the wing mirrors replaced by cameras to smooth further its shape.

Q. Were there any key challenges the team faced in its construction? If so, what were these and how were they overcome?

A. Given that we are currently experiencing some ongoing technical challenges, we would prefer not to focus on challenges experienced during production. Some examples of some of the engineering challenges that were experienced are below:
A traditional Aston Martin wings badge was deemed to be too heavy for the Aston Martin Valkyrie. A bespoke, super light badge chemically etched from ultra-fine stainless steel is 70 microns thick. Thinner even than a human hair and all importantly for Aston Martin Valkyrie, 99.4 per cent lighter than a traditional enamel Wings badge. The world’s most sophisticated windscreen wiper system. A torque tube fitted inside the carbon fibre blade twists the wiper to ensure it can maintain contact around the wraparound windscreen and still work at 200mph. The wiper arm weighs just 594g, and the washer bottle is limited to 1L to save weight, the minimum allowed in law.

Q: How did the idea of 3D scanning drivers to custom-build the seats come about?

A: This was an initial engineering idea and was not carried through to final production of the vehicle. The seats are offered in four sizes to allow customisation to various drivers of different dimensions.
