Here is our 10-day itinerary for Japan, there is so much more to see, but if you only have 10 days like us, we believe this is the best itinerary to see all of the main sights and experiences Japan has to offer.
First, you will likely land in the big city of Tokyo, there are two main areas that a recommended, although if you have more than 2 days you can venture further. The first area is Shibuya, famous for the Hokkaido dog, Shibuya Crossing and Meiji Shrine, here you can experience Tokyo’s student culture.
The next area is Shinjuku, more popular for skyscrapers and that more futuristic feel people expect when arriving in Tokyo.
You can then get a bus to Kawaguchiko, an area popular for stunning views of Mt Fuji, gorgeous lakes, traditional ryokans, and onsens with a view of fuji. This can be a luck of the draw type of experience, some people go and the weather hides Mt Fuji, and sometimes you have clear skies and a mesmerizing view of the snowy summit.
You can then either bus to Kyoto, or a bus back to Tokyo and get the JR Bullet Train to Kyoto, we chose the latter as it was cheaper and faster for us. Day 1 explore Fushima Inari Shrine and the surrounding temples. Day 2 head to Arashiyama and visit the famous Bamboo Grove, Monkey Park, and the array of market stalls paving every street in sight. Kyoto was by far our favourite city!!
You can then get a quick bus or train to Nara, the famous quant city where deers roam the park and bow for crackers.
Next stop Osaka, only a 1-hour journey away, on the first day we headed to Universal Studios, this took up the whole day and was amazing! Day 2 you can visit the famous Umeda Sky Building, Osaka Aquarium, and Osaka Castle. If you walk along the way you will come across loads of temples that you can explore.
Next stop Hiroshima, visit the war memorial, ww2 museum, honour the Genbaku Dome Ruins and take in the upsetting surroundings of what happened here a few decades ago. Experience a much less touristy area than the other cities, with more local food and stalls to experience.
Finally, you can head to Fukuoka, a perfect destination to watch sumo.
