The Revolution Cannot Be Tweeted But Can Be A Fresh Start: Our Call Out Cannot Be Our Final Move.
Social networks can serve as a space for activism and organizing. Although it can also be held as a space to connect and educate the people, utilizing it by online activism can replace the real work and sacrifice that it takes to create social change. We have to be careful and intentional with what we do in social media when it comes to social change. Connections are important indeed, but in the social networks of social and environmental justice movements, it is essential to follow through the Jemez Principles even through social media/multi-media platforms.
Be inclusive- make sure that we don’t leave anyone behind when it comes to storytelling and that each experience is shared with respect. Amplifying and connecting our shared togetherness can be the most radical form of social change.
Emphasis on bottom up organizing- the frontline communities’ voices and decisions should always be valued. Those who are widely impacted, or impacted firsthand should have a seat at the table when it comes to what stories are shared and how to share them.
Working together in solidarity and mutuality- there is power in unity and checking our privileges. Once we recognize our roles, we need to maximize our support and efforts into making sure we are being fair and just in our movements.
Build Just Relationship Amongst Ourselves- creating a resource like Kapwang Tao Media LLC for the community, by the community. Cultivating a deep bond within our fight for just and fair laws/policies, and ways of life is important. Owning our collective and individual narratives connects us in a state of constant empowerment. We save ourselves. We tell our stories. No one can take the truth from us.
Commitment to Self Transformation- given that social media is a platform to amplify our movements, our voices, our plans, and our stories, it cannot stop there. It is the first step to activate.
