The future Queen Elizabeth ii a training battalion of the Grenadier Guards.

Her Majesty was appointed as the Colonel of the Grenadier Guards in 1942 following the death of her great-great-uncle and godfather, the Duke of Connaught. The then Princess was presented with a diamond brooch in the form of the regimental badge, as seen in the photograph, to mark the occasion.

She held this title for 33 years before appointing the Duke of Edinburgh, HRH Prince Philip, in 1975.

In 1961, an article appeared in the People that gave a glimpse of the Queen’s thoughts on Marilyn, through the eyes of an unnamed ‘friend’. The article said that after the Royal Command Performance in 1956, the Queen became fascinated with Marilyn and watched every one of her movies. She apparently told the friend, ‘I thought Miss Monroe was a very sweet person. But I felt sorry for her because she was so nervous that she had licked all of her lipstick off’. Footage of the event seems to back this up, since Marilyn can be seen licking her lips as she waited for the royal guests to reach her.

Royal British Legion

Queen Elizabeth II had a long and close relationship with the Armed Forces, both in the United Kingdom and in the Commonwealth.

As Head of the Armed Forces, the Queen was devoted to honouring the service and sacrifice of the entire Armed Forces community and leading the nation in moments of Remembrance each year. She became the first female member of the Royal Family to serve as a full-time active member of the Armed Forces in 1945 when she joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS).

Her Majesty held many honorary ranks and military appointments in the UK and Commonwealth Armed Services and much of her working life was taken up with visits to military bases and ships in the UK and overseas, meeting serving members of the Armed Forces and their families.

In 2009 she introduced the Elizabeth Cross, an award giving special recognition to the families of those who had died on military operations, or as a result of terrorism since 1948.

Her Majesty has been an inspiration to everyone in the Armed Forces community, and her dedication to the Armed Forces will be deeply missed and never forgotten.

A funny and true story about the Queen:

Around 2005, the Queen and her Personal Protection Officer, Dick Griffin, were walking alone one afternoon in the hills near the Scottish royal castle, Balmoral.
Two tourists approached them, and engaged in conversation. Griffin recalls:
"There were two hikers coming towards us, and the Queen would always stop and say hello.
Follow 👉 Royal Family Page
"They were two Americans on a walking holiday.
"It was clear from the moment we stopped that they hadn't recognized the Queen, which was fine.
"The American gentleman was telling the Queen where they came from, where they were going next, and where they'd been in Britain.
"I could see it coming, and sure enough, he said to Her Majesty: 'And where do you live?'
"She replied: 'Well I live in London, but I've got a holiday home just the other side of the hills.'
"He said: 'How long have you been coming up here?'
"She replied: 'I've been coming up here ever since I was a little girl, so over 80 years.'
"You could see the cogs whirring, so he said: 'Well, if you've been coming up here for over 80 years, you must have met the Queen.'
"Quick as a flash, she said: 'I haven't, but Dick here meets her regularly.'
The hiker then asked Griffin what the monarch was like in person.
"Because I was with her a long time, and I knew I could pull her leg, I said: 'Oh, she can be very cantankerous at times, but she's got a lovely sense of humour.'
The next thing I knew, this guy comes round, puts his arm around my shoulder, and before I could see what was happening, he gets his camera, GIVES IT TO THE QUEEN, and says: 'Can you take a picture of the two of us?'
"Then we swapped places, and I TOOK A PICTURE OF THEM WITH THE QUEEN.
"And we never let on, and we waved goodbye.
"Afterwards, Her Majesty said to me: 'I'd love to be a fly on the wall when he shows those photographs to his friends in America, and hopefully someone tells him who I am'."
Rest in Peace Your Majesty ❤️👑🇬🇧

A touching moment was caught on camera when a ray of light shined down at Queen Elizabeth's coffin as it was taken in St Giles' Cathedral for a service of Thanksgiving. The King led a procession to the cathedral behind the Queen's coffin which was draped with Royal Standard in Scotland and dressed with a wreath of flowers. The picture captured by Georgie Gillard was shared on Instagram by Story Picture Agency. Earlier, a double rainbow appeared over the Buckingham Palace after the demise of the Queen.

"Behind every figure is a human being. That is what is at the forefront of my mind as the entire world processes the loss of one of the most formidable figures in our history.

This day - this moment - has always meant a great deal to me. I remember how much joy and pride dad held as someone who had been asked to perform for Her Majesty and Prince Phillip, who were in Toronto in 2002 as part of the tour commemorating her Golden Jubilee. The evening at Roy Thomson Hall was a gathering of some of Canada's spectacular artists and performers, which culminated in a performance of Hymn To Freedom.

Dad had been invited to be in the presence of Her Majesty and members of the Royal Family on previous occasions, but this event was particularly special for him. In the days leading up to the concert, he spent a lot of time talking to then 12 year-old Céline about some of Queen Elizabeth's history. He touched on the things that he was fascinated by, including her love of art and music. He talked about why he held a great deal of respect for her as a leader and as a human being. Coming from someone who had traveled extensively, meeting people from every part of the world, and who held his own experiences as a man belonging to a visible minority and how he would get treated differently depending on where he was and who he was with, these views always carried a lot of weight for me. His outlook reminded me then and reminds me now how important it is to look at life and the people in it and show grace, kindness, understanding and compassion.

While getting ready to head to the stage from the dressing room, I saw my dad putting his jacket with all his medals on. A sight I had not previously ever seen before. When I looked in his eyes, I could see the emotion, nerves, and most predominantly, the pride of his doing this at 77 years old. He was proud of his accomplishments. He was proud to represent his country. He was taking in a once in a lifetime moment the way he deserved to, which was with joy.

At the end of the evening as I walked behind the incredible artists who had just all given their all to share their art with Her Majesty and Prince Phillip, and made my way to stand beside my dad at his request and meet Queen Elizabeth, I caught the eye first of Uncle Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, whose smile and wink showed me the same pride that dad had. When I made my way next to dad, I said "you did it" and he responded with tears, a very tight hug, and "are you ready to stand beside dad and meet the Queen?"

Throughout her historic 70-year reign, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II built an untouchable legacy. It is with endless respect that I say the only thing I feel is appropriate: Thank you, your Majesty. May you rest peacefully."

I remember one particular day, at seven years old, in the St. Albans town centre, feeling the extraordinarily powerful tremor which seemed to pass through the whole nation on the news of the death of George VI and the accession of Elizabeth, the new young queen.

That was way back in 1952, and what a very different world it then was! A year later the decision was taken to broadcast live the moment of coronation in Westminster Abbey, with many people buying their first TV set to share that exact moment, which became an early magical instant of powerfully shared public emotion. Who could have predicted then that Queen Elizabeth’s reign would encompass 69 years, and how much she would provide a hugely valuable constant for so many people in a world which has changed at an increasingly bewildering pace….

I actually met Queen Elizabeth twice - once as a 12 year old chorister at St Albans Abbey in 1957, when she came to a Maundy Thursday service, to carry out the ancient tradition of distributing money to the needy. As choristers, we each received a set of this specially minted, and pretty rare, coinage. The second time was in 1986, when Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice composed a short musical for the queen’s 60th birthday, to be shown as a complete surprise at Windsor Castle, and starring Prince Edward! The whole thing was shrouded in complete secrecy, and I was part of the small band, which also included Jon Hiseman, Barbara Thompson and John Mole.

The queen was lovely, and on great form - the whole audience was simply the whole of the extended Royal Family, plus King Hussein! After the performance they all mingled and shared drinks with us, and Prince Edward introduced me to Her Majesty. The queen then spied bass player John Mole, who was unbelievably shy, actually hiding behind the drum kit……she immediately found her way to him - moving drums aside herself (!) - so she could engage him in a personal conversation. Such a considerate and thoughtful action.

Today has felt a truly moving and historic day. God rest Your Majesty - and God save The King!

A North Wales artist who captured "happy memories" at the Queen's Platinum Jubilee has released a painting in a touching tribute to Her Majesty.

Elysia Gilman, 22, painted a picture celebrating Queen Elizabeth II and has released the artwork as a tribute to her "wonderful life and 70 years of service".

The painting shows the Queen smiling - donning the green outfit she wore on the Buckingham Palace balcony - during the Jubilee celebrations.

was never meant to ascend the throne. Born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor on April 21, 1926, she was third in the line of succession. But following the ascension, and eventual abdication of her uncle, and Elizabeth’s father became king, Elizabeth herself became the heir presumptive, aged ten. And following the passing of George VI, ascended the throne herself, eventually becoming the longest reigning monarch in history. But even before that, the royal’s sense of duty was clear, famously saying on her 21st birthday, “I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.”
