DEAR MR. YULO

Hello po sir!

I'm not part of the press, not a politician, and not even a public figure or influencer. I'm just a guy so overwhelmed with pride and joy sa na-accomplish mo. Grabe, multiple gold medals in individual performances sa Olympics for the Philippines. Nakakaiyak sa saya at ligaya. Hanep. Ang galing mo Mr. Yulo.

Surely, maraming hindi nakita o nabalita sa mga preparation, training, and struggles that you went through to get to where you are now. Those dark and difficult days na nalagpasan mo, make this triumph even sweeter.

I never really thought about the reality of Filipinos competing and winning in the Olympics. For a long while it was something great to watch, but distant and did not include me at all. Pero dahil sa iyo, at sa mga katulad mong atleta noon at ngayon, it became very real not only for me, but for the entire country.

I look at my 2-year old son and think, ‘ikaw anak, baka pwede ka din lumaban sa Olympics!’.

You have become a beacon of victory and hope na nagbigay ng pag-asa sa pangarap ng napakaraming tao.

Salamat talaga. Salamat ulit sa iyo. At sa lahat ng mga atleta na lumaban noon at lumalaban ngayon.

My prayer is that despite all the fame and prestige and blessings na nakukuha mo ngayon, you remain to be that same beacon, that same light for this generation, and the generations to come.

Too many of our heroes have risen, and have fallen. Kinain ng mundo na ginagalawan nila. My hope is that you remain steadfast. Lumaban hindi lang sa larangan ng sports, ngunit pati sa laban ng buhay. Isang manlalaro na matapat, matuwid, at makatarungan.

Your journey can continue to be hard. And minsan feeling mo siguro dumadaan ka sa apoy. Life is hard. It’s hard for everyone.

But you know what’s great about gold? Even if it passes through fire, and hell, and darkness, after that…gold parin sya.
