How salty are the oceans?

The average salinity of the Earth's oceans is approximately 33-35 ppt or 3.3% - 3.5%, or roughly 33-35 g of salt per liter of water. Variations in salinity are attributed to amount of precipitation, ice formation, rate of evaporation and river input. The saltiest lake is the Dead Sea with an estimated salinity of 340 ppt or 34%.
