Production and Event Management
After 30 years of supporting and nurturing new Australian music, Rex Hardware and Billy Honger have worked together to establish a new venture - ‘H Squared Studios’.
We record live, we broadcast live, we produce and put on live shows, work on other people’s shows and we are here to help with a range of Entertainment Services.
Based in the 1887 Ballarat Trades Hall, our Studios also include the many places we have produced live recordings and events since our development stage commenced in 2018.
We aim to provide cost effective solutions for musical artists wanting online video promotion and have a lot of fun presenting and recording shows from artists we like and support.
Rex Hardware : H Squared Studios Director and experienced multimedia professional for over 30 years including working with 3BBB-FM, VIC-TV, RATNET Live Internet Broadcasting and a 21 year teaching career with Uni of Ballarat/FedUni Live Production Courses producing Australia’s longest running internet music broadcast ‘Live on Lydiard’.
Billy Honger: H Squared Studios Director, Videographer, Restaurant/Deli/Nightclub owner/operator in Detroit USA with a keen interest in producing Australian music.
We commenced our development phase in Oct 2018 setting up a control room and live broadcast and recording studio at The Main Bar in Bakery Hill. Our very first show was a brilliant tribute to The Dead Salesmen by 30 local musicians. This continued with 6 months and nearly 30 live shows on both the Indoor and Outdoor stages at the venue.
Some of our favourite moments at The Main Bar are here on a Youtube Playlist:

In May 2019, we moved our studio operations and joined the team at Ballarat Trades Hall.
Our development stage has continued in 2019/20 supporting many great shows.
Some of our projects at Ballarat Trades Hall:
White Night Ballarat, City of Ballarat Fringe Benefits Festival, a World premiere of an orchestral piece, Pete Daffy playing the 50’s blues, Northcote String Band playing the Frolic Festival, 1,000 people for the School Strike Against Climate (streamed live)
recording of an orchestra performing the new Federation University Graduation theme, Australian theatre and screen legends telling the story of Henry Lawson and Banjo Patterson, and music headline shows with The Ballarat Ska Union, Dr Hernandez for Ballarat Foto Biennale. We’ve produced Balkan brass with Wunderhorns, high energy performances with The Fat Thing and The Push Reggae Band, old world vocal sounds from Singers of The Black Book and VOX Ballarat
Most of these events were live audience shows all attended by a our local community.

Despite the current pandemic we have continued to engage our community via live streaming events. 19 local music acts were featured online via live shows at Trades Hall, The Eastern and Volta using our unrivalled 22 years of experience in live internet broadcasting technologies and our high end portable production rigs.
In partnership with Ballarat Trades and Labour Council Inc. we are hoping to continue to generate events activity at Trades Hall and provide high quality technical production and recording services for users.
Trades Hall is also the base for our extensive archiving and restoration services aimed at preserving local and Australian culture.
Vinyl, Cassette, Reel to Reel, VHS, Beta, Video8, VHSC, Mini DV, 16mm, 8mm are some of the formats we can digitise and have been archiving for clients.
If you want to ask us about what we do or have a project in mind , drop us a line.
