Do you have books that you don't read anymore? Maybe it's because you've grown out of them or you simply have books you like more. Either way, you can make space in your bookshelves by bringing those books to a donation center. Did you know? Tennis has existed since Middle Ages, under the name "jeu de paume", which is French for "game of palm". In fact, before the 16th century, tennis was played without racquets, by striking the ball with palm of the hand. The modern name for the sport is a shortened form of "lawn tennis", which in turn came from the fact that the sport was originally played on grass. The word "tennis" derives from the French exclamation "Tenez!", which means "receive" or "take", and which would be yelled out by the player starting a point.

Did you know? Jeans are an American invention that dates back to the 19th century, but the word "jeans" is actually of European origin. In fact, the material that jeans were originally made out of was produced in Europe, in the cities of Genoa, in Italy, and Nîmes, in France. The word "jeans" actually comes from the French pronunciation of Genoa.

The word "denim" also has a similar origin. It comes from the French expression "de Nîmes", meaning "from Nîmes".

Have you accidentally spilled water on a book or dropped it in the bathtub? While getting a book wet is never good, it can be saved if you know how to dry it properly. The first thing to do is to put it in a dry place and press paper towels against the wet pages. Do not rub the pages to avoid breaking them. Once the paper towels stop absorbing water, leave the book open to the wet pages for a few days until they're completely dry. If the book is very wet, you can also try drying the wet pages by placing a warm (not hot!) iron on the wet paper. Make sure to place a tissue between the page and the iron to avoid damaging the book. This will also help smooth out the wet pages.

Did you know? Photography, the art of fixing images to paper using light and chemicals, was invented in the early 19th century. The word "photograph" was coined at the same time to describe this revolutionary new invention, although several other terms, such as "heliograph" and "photogram" were also suggested. Unfortunately, neither one turned out to be as popular as "photograph", which means "drawing of light".

Did you know? The word "clue" existed in the Middle Ages, but not only was it spelled differently, it also meant something completely different! Back then, a clue—or "clew", as it was written back then—was a ball of yarn. Its new meaning of "something that points the way" only appeared in the 17th century. Interestingly, the new meaning comes from an ancient Greek myth that was already several thousand years old!
