Update on Pockets of Disturbances and Traffic in Port-of-Spain

Several persons have been detained in connection with several pockets of disturbances in Port-of-Spain earlier today as investigations are ongoing.

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) advises that all debris on the East and Westbound lanes of the Beetham Highway is cleared and lanes have been reopened to vehicles.

TTPS and Defence Force personnel were immediately deployed into the capital city earlier today to quell various protest actions on the Beetham Highway, Nelson Street, Duncan Street and other surrounding areas.

The TTPS along with the Defence Force continues to monitor and regulate the roadways to ensure the safety and security of all road users.

However, there remains residual traffic around the Queen’s Park Savannah and Lady Young Road.

Police are currently deployed to aid in alleviating traffic in these areas.

*Chacon Street

The TTPS is active on the scene, please be careful if you are in Port Of Spain, Heavy Traffic will be expected... will update as soon as more info is received...

AMENDMENTS TO THE DEMERIT POINTS SYSTEM FOR MINOR TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS

The Ministry of Works and Transport has been consistently monitoring the operation of the Demerit Points System and its impact on changing drivers’ behaviour and attitude toward road traffic laws and road safety. A review of the System was taken into consideration after concerns from our stakeholders and the general public.

Effective March 01st, 2022, the Ministry removed the number of demerit points for several minor traffic violations and altered the number of demerit points for others. See table below for full listing

Members of the public are reminded that the fixed penalties payable for the traffic violations mentioned below remain UNCHANGED as part of the Fixed Penalty Traffic Ticketing System.

16 YEAR OLD BEATEN WITH BELT BY FATHER, FELL DOWN STAIRS, DIES WHILE UNDERGOING TREATMENT.

Around 4:10pm on today's date 05/04/22 a nurse at the Couva District Health Facility contacted the Couva Police Station and reported that a 15 yr old female was brought in by her father unresponsive and passed away whilst undergoing treatment.

Her name was given as Alliyah Kandice Alexander 16 yrs old, date of birth 29/05/06, student of Couva West Secondary.

It was reported that she was beaten with a belt by her father David Alexander 36yrs old, a Cpl attached to the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force based at Teteron barracks regimental number 11278, of Claxton Bay, that he beat her with a belt and she fell down a flight of stairs. He was detained and brought to the station as relatives attempted to attack him at the health facility.

FATAL ACCIDENT ON THE UBH: WOODFORD CAFE OWNER DIES IN CRASH

A 54-year-old man has been killed in a vehicular accident along the Uriah Butler Highway.

According to information reaching 103.1FM News, Martin Hatem lost control of his Kia Sportage in the vicinity of Bick’s.

The vehicle hit a lamppost and flipped several times.


Mr Hatem was the only occupant in the vehicle and died at the scene.

ASP Mohammed and Inspector Harrylal are currently at the scene.

103.1FM News understands Mr Hatem was the owner of Woodford Café.

The accident has led to a massive traffic pile-up along the Uriah Butler and Churchill Roosevelt Highways.
