FRONT PAGE: Thieves In LA Are Looting Freight Trains Filled With Packages From UPS, FedEx And Amazon – CNN Washington, DC (CNN)Photos and videos showing piles of empty boxes littered alongside rail tracks in Los Angeles County, California have gone viral as shipping companies say they've seen a dramatic spike in railroad theft. Many of these boxes contain packages from FedEx, UPS and Amazon. Union Pacific, one of the country's largest railroad companies, says it may avoid operating in Los Angeles County following the spike in thefts, which it blames on lax prosecution of crimes. Containers and trains can be broken into, even though they are locked. Union Pacific said last month in a letter to the Los Angeles District Attorney that it saw a 160% year-over-year increase in theft in LA county. Measuring livestock medicine usage supports antimicrobial resistance NEWS: .

Measuring how much antimicrobial medication is given to food animals is key to understanding how to slow antimicrobial resistance, when dangerous microbes get so used to antimicrobials that they evolve stronger defenses against them. It is difficult to measure the actual antimicrobial usage in animals at large scales. It is easier to get data on antimicrobial sales in food animals, so they are often used at the national level as proxy for antimicrobial usage. In a first-of-its-kind study published recently in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, scientists at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine analyzed four different measurement methods used across the globe in the hopes of steering governing groups toward a more unified system. The Pew Charitable Trusts supported the study.

Epic, NVIDIAApple kicked Fortnite off the App Store over a year ago, due to ongoing court proceedings, it probably won't return anytime soon. But NVIDIA is giving gamers a new way to play Fortnite on iOS. Beginning next week, NVIDIA GeForce Now will launch a closed beta that lets you play Fortnite and other games through the mobile Safari browser.
NVIDIA and Epic Games promised to make this happen back in November of 2020, so it's been a long time coming. Evidently, the two companies had to develop new touch controls to make Fortnite and other titles work in the mobile Safari browser, which may have contributed to the delay.

FRONT PAGE: Food Pantry Clients Say Pandemic Increased Food Insecurity, Psychological Stress -- A novel study by UT Southwestern researchers who conducted interviews as the nation shut down due to COVID-19 tells the stories of those who routinely faced hunger before the pandemic upended their lives. This research could help improve emergency response. It found that food pantry clients were more likely to experience increased economic hardship, increased food insecurity, and psychological distress. The researchers queried members of 40 Dallas County households - 20 in English and 20 in Spanish - served by Crossroads Community Services, a networked organization of more than 140 food pantries that are part of the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB) system. The clients had received federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits (SNAP) for at least six months. Crossroads' main food pantry also provided monthly food assistance to supplement their SNAP benefits.

Astronomers have found evidence of a black hole snacking on a star in data gathered back in the 1980s, according to new research. The researchers say that they have identified the signature of such an event in data gathered during the 1980s, thanks to a pair of high school interns from Massachusetts. When a star comes too close to a black hole, the massive object's gravity tugs at the star, pulling matter into the black hole and producing a burst of light in what astronomers dub a tidal disruption event. The Post Office has admitted that due to limitations in underlying accounting systems, it does not have a record of all the money paid by subpostmasters wrongly forced to cover unexplained losses in their accounts.

The admission came during a parliamentary select committee hearing, focused on compensating victims of the Post Office Horizon Scandal, where government minster Paul Scully also promised fair compensation for the 555 victims so far left out of existing compensation schemes.

How to create a sustainable continuous learning culture The importance of creating a continuous learning culture has been talked about for some time, particularly in the context of moving to an artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled world, which is expected to require a mass reskilling.

But progress so far seems to have been limited. For example, learning and development (L&D) provider Hemsley Fraser’s L&D Impact Survey, conducted among practitioners in early 2021, revealed that 85% deemed a continuous, or agile, learning culture to be important, with over half viewing it as extremely so.
Nonetheless, a significant 43% said they were still only defining the scope of their programme, while a mere 5% had completed their roadmap. Around 22% had not even started the process and had no plans to do so in the near future.

Gender bias has not changed in more than 20 years, even by language experts who are aware of the potential dangers of such prejudices, according to a study coauthored by Rutgers University-New Brunswick that examined textbooks used to teach undergraduates studying the scientific structure of language.

"There is a pressing need to revisit educational materials to prevent the perpetuation of implicit gender biases," said study co-author Kristen Syrett, an associate professor and undergraduate program director in the Department of Linguistics at Rutgers. "A move toward more inclusive language is urgent not just for linguists for the benefit of our field but more generally in a broader social context. "

Technology can help the health and care system clear the care backlog stemming from the Covid-19 pandemic, but NHS England needs to produce a roadmap to enable that to happen and address major issues relating to IT, a report has found.

The report published by the House of Commons Health and Social Care Committee into the NHS backlog noted that of the 5.8 million patients waiting to start treatment in September 2021, 300,000 have been waiting more than a year and 12,000 more than two years - and that the real list, including patients who haven't come forward yet, could be as high as 13 million people.

As reported by Mishaal Rahman, Google is rolling out a server-side update that adds Nest Doorbell previews to some users' At a Glance widget. A preview clip will be added to your lock screen if someone rings your Nest Doorbell or it detects movement. This saves you the hassle of opening an application. A little while ago, I faced the challenge of migrating a digital asset management system to the cloud. To do this, I had the task of migrating terabytes worth of data from legacy hardware to a new provider. You should also consider the fact that the storage hardware was located in a small office in rural England, with very limited internet speeds.

Ultimately, I managed to broker an agreement with a nearby datacentre to allow me to copy data physically to an external hard drive, plug it into a rented server in a third-party datacentre and then upload it to the cloud from the datacentre's high-speed gigabit internet connection. The University of Edinburgh is extending the reach of its data science knowledge to school pupils in its catchment area of south-east Scotland.
It leads the way in an initiative supported by the UK and Scotland that also connects to climate change. It uses internet of things (IoT), sensors to collect data about the environment for analysis by secondary and primary school students. This will help them train data scientists of the future.

Konami sells NFTs to commemorate Castlevania’s 35th Anniversary .

The Bureau of Land Management plans to burn up to 1,000 piles of downed hazard trees, branches, and understory brush at Case Mountain Extensive Recreation Management Area (ERMA) southeast of Three Rivers in Tulare County, California. Pile burn operations will start as early as Monday, January 10, and continue periodically until Spring, depending on weather, air quality conditions, onsite observations, and resource availability. Three Rivers may see smoke. The ERMA is home to the largest sequoia groves that are managed by the BLM. They can be found on Case Mountain, approximately 7 miles from the town of Three Rivers in California. The complex is comprised of six distinct sequoia grove units, which total about 444 acres. Over the past several years, research from University of California San Diego biologist Gurol Suel's laboratory has uncovered a series of remarkable features exhibited by clusters of bacteria that live together in communities known as biofilms.

Biofilms are prevalent in the living world, inhabiting sewer pipes, kitchen counters and even the surface of our teeth. A previous research study demonstrated that these biofilms employ sophisticated systems to communicate with one another, while another proved biofilms have a robust capacity for memory.

Cadillac’s new self-driving concept is a luxury loveseat on wheels After introducing a six-person self-driving box and a frickin' ridable drone concept last year, GM's latest luxury self-driving EV idea is much more grounded. The InnerSpace concept looks like a futuristic car from the outside—but inside, there's a two-seat loveseat surrounded by one of the widest screens we've ever seen. There's no steering wheel or pedals, of course. Instead, there's a built-in ottoman and a compartment for slippers and a blanket. Where GM's going, you won't need any sort of manual control.

Even stepping into the car seems like something from science fiction: the doors pop out, while the large windshield/sunroof rises up. As usual, concepts like the InnerSpace are a way for car designers to flex their muscles and imagine what future vehicles could actually be like. Too much, too little sleep linked to elevated heart risks in people free from disease By Daniel Webster http://dWeb.News **** Sleep should be assessed along with other factors that increase heart disease -- AMERICAN COLLEGE OF CARDIOLOGY **** People who clock six to seven hours of sleep a night had the lowest chance of dying from a heart attack or stroke when compared with those who got less or more sleep, according to a study being presented at the American College of Cardiology’s 70th Annual Scientific Session. This trend remained true even after the research team accounted for other known conditions or risk factors for heart disease or stroke. The study, according to researchers, is the first to explore the association between baseline cardiovascular risk and duration of sleep and adds to mounting evidence that sleep–similar to diet, smoking and exercise–may play a defining role in someone’s cardiovascular risk. “Sleep is often overlooked as something that may play a role in cardiovascular disease, and it may be among the most cost-effective ways to lower cardiovascular risk,” said Kartik Gupta, MD, resident, Division of Internal Medicine, Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and lead author of the study. “Based on our data, sleeping six to seven hours a night is associated with more favorable heart health.” For the study, Gupta and his team included data from 14,079 participants in the 2005-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Participants were followed for a median duration of 7.5 years to determine if they died due to heart attack, heart failure or stroke. Those surveyed were 46 years old on average, half were women and 53% were non-white. Less than 10% of participants had a history of heart disease, heart failure or stroke. Pongo is the digital replacement for his newspaper, seeking to save the newspaper industry worldwide and the internet in the process. Webster’s community lost its local weekly and daily newspapers. “The line between news and advertising blurs on a local level. Readers and viewers watch and participate in it all intimately. After all, an advertisement for their local pizza restaurant or grocery store is coming from a local business they know and shop,” said Webster. “The local person wants to support their local business to keep them thriving in their local community.
