BREAKING: Police sign peace pact with NNPP, APC ahead of Kano Governorship Supreme Court Judgment

The Kano State Police Command has again signed a peace accord with the leaders of both New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP and All Progressives Congress,
Police had earlier signed a similar pact with the parties barring any form of protests or celebrations before, during and after the Court of Appeal verdict that removes Governor Abba Yusuf from office.

The peace accord this time was done in the presence of other security agencies in Kano.

The Kano State Police Commissioner, Usaini Gumel vows to deal decisively with defaulters.
“Recall that the police command had adequately attended to a number of plots by some faceless political pressure groups who are hell-bent on fomenting trouble and to stampede on the general security situation of the State from being very peaceful as it is at now.” He said.

“However, we must appreciate and commend the leadership of both the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) for maintaining their position on standing by the peace accord the third time since they both signed the commitment to ensuring peace and orderliness in all parts of the State.” The Commissioner of Police added.

The Police Command had recently embarked on courtesy visits to Religious Leaders across the major faiths in the state and urged them to cooperate with all the security officials being part of the community-based policing approach to keep the state safer.

The NNPP was represented by the party’s state Chairman, Hashim Sulaiman while the APC by the state party deputy chairman, Shehu Maigari.

Others include local council chairmen from the entry and exit points of the state.

Uphold popular mandate of Kano, Plateau, Zamfara – Northern groups cries out to Supreme Court

Following the Election Petition Appeal Tribunal verdict in respect to Kano, Plateau and Zamfara states governorship seats, a group known as Northern Initiative for Peace and Economic Development, have cried and appealed to Supreme Court to set aside the decision of Appellate Court and uphold the popular mandate in Kano, Plateau and Zamfara.

Recalled, the recent Appeal Court Panels judgments sitting in Abuja has generated a lot of concerns across the length and breadth of Nigeria.

Northern Initiative for Peace and Economic Development in collaboration with Coalition groups in the above mentioned three states said they were against one party system in Nigeria.

Leader of the groups, Abel Jilemsam stated that the peace and stability of Kano, Plateau and Zamfara are integral to the overall wellbeing of Nigeria.

Jilemsam made the assertion during a world press conference tagged, “urgent appeal for justice, respect for popular mandate in Kano, Plateau and Zamfara governorship election petition Appeal judgments” held on Tuesday in Jos.

According to him, the recent governorship elections held on March 18, 2023, in Kano, Plateau, and Zamfara have demonstrated the collective will of the people in shaping the future of their states. The popular mandate expressed through the electoral process must be respected to ensure the continued sustenance of democratic values in Nigeria.

“We recognise the importance of a fair and impartial judiciary in upholding the rule of law and safeguarding democratic principles. The judiciary plays a critical role in ensuring justice, protecting citizens’ rights, and preserving the credibility of the electoral process.

“Any actions that compromise these principles undermine the very foundation of any democratic nation. Without a functioning judiciary, there is a risk of constitutional violations going unchecked, leading to the erosion of citizens’ rights and freedoms. The fairness and transparency of the judicial system are vital for fostering public trust, confidence, and belief in the democratic process.”

The groups leader further reiterated that, “It is imperative to emphasize that any attempt to manipulate or subvert the will of the people using judicial tools, particularly by the ruling APC, will not be accepted. The foundation of a robust democracy lies in the integrity of the electoral system and the adherence to fair and transparent processes.

“The citizens of Kano, Plateau, and Zamfara have exercised their democratic rights, and their voices must be heard and honored. Attempts to undermine the sanctity of these elections not only jeopardize the democratic principles that Nigeria upholds but also erode public trust in the electoral process.

“We call upon all stakeholders, including the electoral authorities and the judiciary, to ensure a thorough and unbiased judgement as we head to supreme court for disputes arising from the ruling of appeal Judgments. It is crucial that the legal processes be transparent, just, and free from any undue influence to preserve the democratic foundation on which our nation stands.

“In the spirit of unity and progress, we urge all parties involved to prioritize the greater good of the people and respect the outcome of the elections. Upholding the popular mandate is paramount for the sustained growth and development of our democratic

Nigeria,Over 100 Cases Of GBV Reported Weekly

Amnesty International (AI) has revealed that more than 100 cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) are reported weekly in Kano a State in the Northern part of Nigeria.

Expressing worry over the development, the Country Director of AI, Isa Sanusi, said that they had already developed a comprehensive human rights agenda and handed the same to the state government.

Sanusi said, “Unfortunately, today there are no social safeguards for the poor and the vulnerable. We should have rights to education and healthcare because these services should be readily available for everyone.”

The Board Chairman of AI, Nigeria, and Executive Director of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, noted that central in the abuses were military and security agencies, hence the urgent need for media practitioners to heighten the calls for security accountability and to ensure that accountability was included in the military framework in Nigeria.

JUST IN: Abba Gida-Gida Begins Demolition Of ‘Illegal’ Structures In Kano

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, popularly known as Abba Gida-Gida, has commenced the demolition of structures believed to be illegally erected on properties belonging to the government.

E.p.t.v correspondent asked resident around the environs who said late Friday night, a task force set up by the governor began the demolition of structures built inside the Kano Race Course (Filin Sukuwa).

Recall that Abba Gida-Gida had in his inaugural speech on Monday gave a marching order to security agencies in the state to immediately take over all public properties sold by the administration of former Governor Umaru Ganduje.

“I am announcing, today, that all these public places and assets that were immorally plundered and sold by the Ganduje administration should be taken over by law enforcement agencies, led by the police, the DSS, Civil Defence, and Hisbah pending the final decision of government,” .

Some of the properties the governor was referring to include “lands in and around schools, religious and cultural sites, hospitals and clinics, graveyards and green areas, and along the city wall of Kano”, as well as other landed properties and assets belonging to Kano State within and outside the state to their cronies and agents.”

He announced that a Judicial Commission of Inquiry would be empaneled in the coming days “to ensure that all perpetrators and those that aided and abetted them are brought to justice.”

In a related development, the governor on Friday also directed “that all land developers at the Hajj Camp to stop immediately.”

He said this during a visit to the Kano State Pilgrims Camp to see its condition.

“I’m appalled that the facility that was meant to serve as a home away from home for intending pilgrims from Kano State and beyond has been debased by the immediate past administration, with many plots of land there sold to their cronies,” he said.

New Fuel Price: Reverse To Old Price, Kano Govt. Urges Marketers

His Excellency Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusif, the governor of Kano state, has urged petroleum marketers to reinstate the previous prices for petroleum goods in order to lessen the current hardship experienced by the general public.

The governor, according to a press release by his Chief Press Secretary, Sanusi Bature said, he is aware that the marketers still had old products in stock that were supposed to be sold at the previous pricing.

To reduce the needless hardship on the state’s citizens, the marketers should exercise some restraint and quickly reopen all filling stations with available products in stock to sell at the former price.

“As a concerned Governor, I am disheartened to see our dear People of Kano suffering as a result of an unjustified fuel hike, and the situation must be stopped right away,” the governor said.

Kano, according to Governor Abba Kabir, is the commercial hub for the country’s northern region as well as certain countries in West Africa, and its bustling populace continues to enjoy favorable business conditions.

The Governor urged the good citizens of Kano state to maintain their composure and uphold the law because the government is always prepared to make sure that people are doing their affairs conveniently.

Subsidy: NNPC sells petrol in Lagos for N488, N537 in Abuja, PH N511, and 540 in kano.

The long awaited price for petrol was effected by NNPC limited Wednesday morning providing clarity around prices post the removal of the controversial subsidy which cost almost $10bn annually.

As reported by BusinessDay also notes that this new development is seen in Lagos where NNPCL now retail fuel at N488 a litre at its station on Kingsway Ikoyi while the NNPC Mega Station, Lagos Bus Stop, at Port Harcourt today sells for N511 per litre.

NNPC is the sole supplier of petrol in Nigeria today and it is now expected that other marketers will take a cue from the NNPC prices and adjust their own pump price this morning.

Analysts say since NNPC has effected different pump prices for different cities, this may mean that not only has subsidy gone but also that the wasteful price equalisation mechanism which ensured petrol had the same official price all over Nigeria was also gone.

It is unclear what FX exchange rate NNPC has used to arrive at its pump price but it could be around N600/$.

President Bola Tinubu who resumed at A*o Rock on Tuesday afternoon held a long meeting with the CEO of NNPC and CBN governor Godwin Emefiele on the vexed matters of fuel subsidy and the multiple foreign exchange rates.

This was after Tinubu had announced in his inauguration speech that subsidy was gone and that the CBN had been mandated to abrogate the multiple exchange rates regime
