MACRA looks back at a wonderful year 2023

It's been such a wonderful year 2023.
A lot has happened I don't even know where to start from.

The head office relocated from
Blantyre to Lilongwe, aligning with government policy of housing all MDAs in the capital.

MACRA managed to officially open our Mzuzu offices. This is very strategic because it gives us extra capacity to pe*****te rural areas in the north in our bid to bring digital services to all.

Our strategic plan wa launched in the year 2023, in Mzuzu.

The communications act of 2016 is under review, aligning it with the technological developments and making it relevant.

A total of 5 new digital laws; cybercrimes, cyber security, e-commerce, start-up and electronic transaction bills, are being drafted being readied for 2024.

A special mention to the Women and Girls in Cyber Africa workshop which took place at BICC in August to harness efforts geared at ensuring women and girls enjoy the internet in a safe and secure environment.

We finalised the National Child Online Protection Strategy to ensure vulnerable populations are protected from cyber threats. It’s now ready implementation.

The data protection bill was passed into law, making a huge step towards a safe digital space for all.

In a bid to build a secure and scalable innovation landscape, the Muuni Fund was launched in 2023. Working closely with 35 district council and aiming to produce 105 new start ups that will be linked to markets from day 1.

In the year, Malawi through MACRA was elected chair of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) focus group on Costing Models, Chair for CRASA’s Postal and Vice Chair of Economic Regulation Committees that will ensure Malawi’s leadership in the communications industry in the SADC Region.

This year we have seen the National Addressing System (NAS) being rolled out country-wide. We also made significant strides in satellite technology.

Conspiracy Theory: WHY ILLUMINATED GRACE CHINGA BEFORE' NDIDZAULULA

Malawians have read and watch documentaries on conspiracy theories on deaths of international celebrities.

The deaths of stars such as Michael Jackson and Whytney Huston were all linked to their involvement with the Illuminati dark forces. But never, was it imagined that such theories can erupt within Malawi.

In 2016, Malawians woke up to the shocking news of a sudden death of one of the gifted gospel music singers Grace Chinga, and few hours later a theory has imaged linked the death to her unwilling initiation into the illuminati occult by flamboyant prophet Shepherd Bushiri.

The theory, which has been developed by Braveheart Media Group and continues to circulate on the social media, further revealed that Grace Chinga's death was long predicted by two of Bushiri's recruits Armstrong Kalua and Gwamba. Ironically, the two produced the song, titled Grace is Gone, long before they joined Bushiri's ministry.

According to Braveheart Media Group, Grace Chinga had a special relationship with Bushiri but later discovered his weaked ways and opted not only to walk out but to tell it all to the outside world.

The group further disclosed that the release of N'dzaulula was a defiant feat after she was fore-warned by Bushiri.

In the song, Chinga promised that she would reveal thing which happens the dark under world. She stated that she would let people know that Bushiri has bloody money which he got in a dirty way.

Ironically, Gwamba, who is was few weeks into Bushiri's ministry was the first to update his status confirming Grace's death.

Chinga labelled Bushiri as a Hyena in a Lamb Skin who she had kept his secrets for a long time and time was rife to let people know who he was.

She also alleged that she would reveal that Bushiri has a lot of kids outside wedlock, it further had a message that Bushiri is a crook who needed to be exposed if he had not repented and asked for God's forgive

Biography of the Igbo Language Expert, Maazi Ogbonnaya Okoro, who has been wrestling Reno Omokri over his claims that "200,000 Igbos Were Slaves To Itshekiri People"

“Ogbonnaya Mark Okoro is a Linguist, Igbo Language expert, American Sign Language interpreter, translator and author of over 58 Igbo books in different genres of literature. He was the first BBC Igbo translator and have worked as a translator for different national and International Organizations like UNESCO and United Nations as well as a translator for National Bureau of Statistics.

“He holds Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics and Igbo Studies from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and subsequently trained on Film Subtitle and Translation by the Newcastle University and the University of the West of Scotland, UK.

“He featured in movies and coached the first actor who acted in American Sign language in a film produced in Nigeria by Onyeka Nwelue. He translated the movie and did the voice over.
“As an undergraduate, his published Igbo books were used for exams both for undergraduate and postgraduate level. He published books used to set examinations for them.

“His books are approved for Secondary schools, by the Ministries of Education, Five Eastern States, Nigeria. Different tertiary institutions use his books for exams. He owns online school where he teaches Igbo language for the Igbo and non-Igbo all over the world. He has translated many books and materials into the Igbo language.
“His interviews have been aired on different TV stations, Radio stations and Newspapers in both Nigeria and South Africa.

“Ogbonnaya is the American sign language interpreter for Talking Health with Dr. Laz aired on AIT. He was the sign language interpreter for the African Economic Congress 2020 interpreting over 42 speeches including that of CBN governor, Imo State governor, Stirling Bank MD, four African Ambassadors, president of Malawi, etc.
“He is currently the Translations Director, Abibiman Publishers UK.”

한미가 북한의 고도화된 핵 위협 등에 공동으로 대응하기 위한 지침인 '맞춤형 억제전략'을 10년 만에 개정했습니다.

국방부는 오늘 제55차 한미안보협의회의에서, 북핵 공격에 대비한 한국의 재래식 능력과 미국의 핵 능력 등 미국의 모든 군사능력을 활용하는 방안이 반영된 '맞춤형 억제전략'을 한미 국방장관이 승인했다고 밝혔습니다.

양국 장관은 이번 지침의 개정으로 북한의 어떠한 핵 사용 상황에도 대비할 수 있는 동맹의 능력을 강화시킬 것이라는 데에 동의하고, 확장억제 분야에서 협력이 높아지고 있다고 평가했습니다.

한미는 또 북한 미사일 위협의 탐지 능력을 강화하기 위해 미국의 조기경보위성을 통한 정보 공유를 강화해나가기로 하는 한편, 내년에도 연합야외기동훈련의 규모와 종목을 확대하는 데에 협력하기로 했습니다.

Malawi Communications Regulator Authority Director of Broadcasting speaking on behalf of their Director General Daud Suleman, said it well at the soft launch of Converged Technology Networks rebrand earlier this week.

The lack of a good number of competitive ISPs causes a lot of problems in developing countries high prices, poor quality service, insufficient reach and coverage among others.

Ben Matranga the Managing Partner at Connectivity Capital also spoke passionately about their work supporting ISPs in developing countries in building out infrastructure to make internet services more accessible.

This year's delegates heard from Rt Hon Tony Blair, Sanna Marin, Gwenda Fong, Nicklas Berild Lundblad, Tom Nixon, and Julien Drouet in conversation with Institute experts as we unpacked principles and practical solutions for government to harness the power of artificial intelligence for better, more efficient public services.

The Tech Accelerator is a leaders' forum for the future with a clear vision: to enable learning and exchange of ideas between leaders who champion technology in government, leveraging the Institute's insight from our work advising governments in 30+ countries on strategy, policy and delivery with tech as an enabler.

Protect street signs: National Addressing critical infrastructure. 14 October 2023. In our article a fortnight ago, we indicated how the implementation of the National Addressing System (NAS) across the country has been greatly affected by vandalism.

This was evident in the pilot phase where most of the galvanized metal poles with street name plates in many locations were forcibly removed by thieves within few days after being installed.

A spot check in Blantyre markets found that they were being used for making all kinds of metal works by tinsmiths and wielders; from making farm tools like hoes and panga knives to house construction accessories. Alternatively, to curb vandalism, the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) decided to use concrete signages. Unfortunately, concrete means more costs on cement and is labour intensive. Beyond that, it is not as colorful as metal poles with street name plates where you can use an unlimited number of colours.

However, these concrete signages are being vandalized too. Currently, we have reports of several concrete road signages being damaged in the northern region, where these are being installed to support NAS.

These signages would carry critical information of road names and other infrastructures, and then one opts to damage them? For heaven’s sake, why? MTL which is also an internet provider has also been complaining against cable vandalism. Other mobile network operators have also been complaining against vandalism at their transmitters.

The sum-total of vandalism is that it affects the quality not just of communication services, but also negatively hampers development. On top of that, companies have to spend more on security to protect cables and transmitters. And more costs are also incurred in order to replace those cables that have been stolen.

This is why MACRA is appealing to Malawians to stop stealing these cables. Say no to vandalism Remember that a digital economy is the catalyst for the achievement

The transformational nature of AI is undeniable, as is its potential for impact globally. African countries possess a unique opportunity to harness AI to leapfrog development, compete on the global stage, and reimagine the role of the state.

At the AI for Leaders Summit in Malawi last week, TBI, AICE Africa and the Malawi Government brought together the region’s leading thinkers to explore AI’s potential in reshaping the African continent.

To harness the power of the , the continent must adopt a Pan-African approach, focusing on further developing foundational AI infrastructure, building on the progress made by existing initiatives and developing partnerships.

Through the and support of TBI, and the Malawi Government have already boosted internet connectivity and reach in Malawi, putting in place the foundational blocks from which AI innovation can continue to be built in the future.

Daniel Ikuenobe, Southern Africa Regional Director at TBI commented, “Africa has endless potential to advance the development of AI, both in the continent and throughout the world.

Activist Bon Kalindo has made a stinging claim that without vice president Saulos Chilima, President Lazarus Chakwera would not have won the 2020 presidential elections.

Kalindo made the remarks on Saturday evening, 2nd September, 2023 when he was invited for a special program with Zodiak Broadcasting Station, days after his arrest.

Kalindo popular by his stage name ‘Winiko’, revealed that he will die a happy man because he is one of the politicians who were behind the successful formation of the United Transformation Movement (UTM).

He was, however, so quick to mention that he left the party because he felt UTM had gone astray by being a member of Tonse Alliance up to date which he labelled as a “bad system”.

The son of Mulanje was of the view that if Chilima can break from the Tonse Alliance, the will be able to implement what he promised Malawians

According to Kalindo, he can comfortably return to the UTM party if Chilima leaves the alliance.

Kalindo who said does not talk with the Malawi vice president, also mentioned that Chilima is the one who helped Chakwera to become the Malawi president.

President Chakwera opens Kalipano Hotel
President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has commended Chairperson for Mtalimanja Holdings Dr. Napoleon Dzombe for entrusting Sunbird to manage Kalipano Country Resort situated in Dowa District.
Speaking during the official opening ceremony of the country resort, Chakwera said Dr. Dzombe has acted in good faith towards Government as he is taking part in promoting the Agricultural, Tourism and Mining (ATM) strategy earmarked for the country's development.
“Dr Dzombe has chosen one of the three priority sectors as the target for this investment because he trusts what we say that developing the tourism sector is one of our top priorities”, Chakwera emphasized.
Chairperson for Mtalimanja Holdings, Dr Napoleon Dzombe said the resort is also a business ecosystem where communities are engaged in agricultural activities, such as fish farming among others.
In addition, Dr. Dzombe added that community members surrounding the facility will also benefit from employment opportunities.
Minister of Tourism Vera Kamtukule said the establishment of Kalipano Country Resort is an embodiment of the MW2063 national development vision of an inclusively wealthy and self-reliant nation.
The facility has 54 rooms, and offers a wide range of leisure facilities including activities on the magnificent Lake Dzombe, outdoor swimming pool, two event gardens and a planned restaurant.

LILONGWE - In observance of Malawi’s Population Week 2023, USAID/Malawi congratulates Malawi on the launch of its new National Population Policy. Focused on harnessing the demographic dividend, youth needs, and much more, this new policy takes a critical step toward achieving Malawi 2063 vision by taking a whole-of-society and cross-sectoral approach to addressing population growth.

USAID has supported the Government of Malawi in drafting its third National Population Policy, which will be active until 2030. On Wednesday, July 12, USAID/Malawi’s Acting Mission Director Teresa McGhie joined the government of Malawi officials in launching the policy.

The overall goal of the National Population Policy is "to have a manageable population that has access to adequate, high-quality social services and economic opportunities that can meaningfully contribute to national development." This means that a well managed population will enable the Government to provide adequate and quality social services and economic opportunities for all Malawians so that they meaningfully contribute to national development.

USAID is committed to working with the government of Malawi to secure a future that ensures economic prosperity and accountable governance for all Malawians. NASA aims to fly New York to London in 1.5 hours

The United State’s space agency, NASA, recently announced that they have been exploring the idea of supersonic passenger air travel.

According to Daily Mail, this means that NASA wants to help commercial passengers travel from New York to London in less time than it would takes to watch the average in-flight movie, around 1.5 hours.
