“What Are You Afraid Of?” hits a little differently in 2021 than it did, while ringing in 2009 at the with West Indian Girl, with then lead singer and absolute smokeshow at the helm.

Prayers' frontman Reyes sees your humdrum mysticism with vague Satanistic tendencies, and raises you an ancestral deity.

The song from Yakamoto Kotzuga's- T.H.R.U. has this amazing tension running throughout. No lyrics, and a disembodied voice paired with a sexy, restrained beat building and retreating in waves.

All of the above, added up to an image of someone singing with a figurative hand over their face, with an unarticulated message but bursting at the seams with emotion. Needless to say, I was thrilled with the casting choice for the disembodied voice!

Please, don't let me keep you from experiencing the video for Death No More from IC3PEAK, a Moscovite electronic duo made up of nihilism and your nightmares.

This was the last video IC3PEAK released, before being banned from performing in Russia, back in 2018. But it's all good, because the band has since continued to delight/terrify fans with beautifully shot and macabre videos like this one.

Nothing tickles my fancy better than coming across a beautiful instrumental track. When I find one I love, it's a forever thing. I have forgotten entire bands and years of my own life, but I'll be damned if I'm letting go of that one track from that one band.

Finding a great instrumental is not the kind of task you can cram for. There is an overwhelming amount of tracks out there, but finding one that speaks to you through the power of sound alone is a rarity.

A great instrumental does not age or become a guilty pleasure over time. It stands alone, without the help of vocals or lyrics amplifying the message. Great instrumental music should exist somewhat independently from context, if you love the track at 2:00am in your headphones, you should also love it when it's streaming out of your sh*tty car radio during rush hour traffic.

I'm partial to instrumentals that channel seemingly opposing tones and moods. Russian has this great expression "светлая печаль", which literally translates to "light sadness." Leave it to the Russian people and language, to offer up different word gradations for sadness, like the Eskimos do for snow. Light Sadness is one of those sassy untranslatable phrases, but to me it describes a feeling of melancholy, uplifted by an overwhelming appreciation for something beautiful, divine and bigger than oneself. Or in short, that feeling when a song gives you the chills, the butterflies, has you tearing up while your heart wells up with joy.

A great example of "light sadness", is the Monday Paracetamol track from Ulrich Schnauss. A perfect track, off of the equally perfect "A Strangely Isolated Place" album.

Back in 2016, I sat down to watch Chappie hoping to see a sequel to the amazing District 9, and was gifted with Die Antwoord instead.

The South African duo, Ninja and Yo-landi were unlike anyone I had ever seen, and all the music samples in the movie were so damn catchy I remember thinking "These two are going to make it BIG."

Cue to me on YouTube 30 minutes later, sifting through Die Antwoord's live performances for enormous crowds and cinematic music videos, coming to the realization that I'm just late to their futuristic rave hip-hop party.

In all its "zef" glory, the poptastic video for "Ugly Boy."

I love musicians who create a whole universe as a backdrop to their music by way of graphic art, videos and stage personas. Having a clear and unique worldview amplifies the message and separates the one-hit-wonders from the big leagues.

Chinese Man is a French-based band whose songs build off of samples taken from jazz, folk and R&B, alongside layers upon layers of keyboards and percussive beats, all held down by a bass line that won't quit.

The result is an atemporal, international yet somehow cohesive sound, shimmying its way through albums you can throw on and enjoy in their entirety.

Music.

A universal language, a best friend and therapist, an overwhelming feeling, a time machine, the world's best mnemonic device and one of the most beautiful expressions of what it means to be human.

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but a song can transport you through time and space in a matter of a single sound.

The song by Coals - Rave '03, reminded me of just that.

The video reminded me of the many lifelong bonds and unlikely friendships that started with an innocuous "Hey, listen to this."
It reminded me that once you establish a musical bond with someone, you will always own a piece of real estate in each other's minds, no matter how far removed geographically or otherwise you may be.

Without further ado, the song and video that inspired me to start Glimmers Darkly - to all the "lone dancers" out there. Tagging just a few friends who are top of mind, and I think would enjoy the page content.
