"Lightning Safety in Bhutan: Lessons from Past Tragedies"

Southern Bhutan is known to be particularly vulnerable to lightning strikes, with several tragic incidents occurring in recent years. It is crucial that we learn from these past events and take appropriate measures to avoid similar accidents in the future.

Reminder 1: "Avoiding Motor Machinery" - In August 2016, a man lost his life at a mining site due to a lightning strike. This serves as a stark reminder to avoid operating motor machinery during thunderstorms, as metal objects and electrical equipment are more likely to attract lightning.

Reminder 2: "Unplugging Electrical Appliances" - Lightning strikes can cause power surges that damage electrical appliances. In March 2018, lightning damaged several appliances in the area, highlighting the importance of unplugging electronic devices during thunderstorms.

Reminder 3: "Seeking Shelter in Safe Areas" - In August 2016, a student lost their life after being struck by lightning while returning to their hostel from a football ground. It is crucial to seek shelter in safe areas during thunderstorms and avoid wide, open spaces and exposed hilltops.

Reminder 4: "Avoiding Tall or Isolated Trees" - Seeking shelter beneath tall or isolated trees during a thunderstorm can be dangerous, as lightning is more likely to strike these objects. In April 2018, a person lost their life while taking shelter under a cypress tree during a thunderstorm.

Lightning strikes can be deadly, but by taking the necessary precautions, we can minimize the risks and prevent future tragedies. It is important to stay informed about lightning safety and to take appropriate measures to protect ourselves and our communities.

Letters and Stamps: Stories from the Past

Did you know that philately is the hobby of collecting and studying postage stamps and postal history? If you enjoy collecting stamps, then you are a philatelist.

In the 1990s, letters were the main source of communication for staying connected with family, friends, and loved ones. As a result, postage stamps were attached to the side of an envelope to indicate the sender of the letter.

In 1962, Bhutan issued its very first postage stamp. If you're part of Generation Z, you may have never seen or used any of the Bhutanese stamps shown below. Bhutanese stamps often reflect the country's unique way of life, indigenous culture, and historic monuments. As per the article on Bhutan Daily; the first postal office was established at the border town of Phuentsholing on 10th october 1962.

There is an old Bhutanese saying 🗣:
རང་གི་གཡུས་ཟམ་པའི་འོག་ལུ་ཨིན་རུང་དགའ།། which aligns with this little boy's expression."Kindly lend your ears and eyes to the young lad as he shares his adoration for his village. Whilst many of us prefer to be in the hustle and bustle of the city.

Gratitude is the quality of being thankful and showing appreciation for what one has received or experienced. It is an important virtue that helps us cultivate positive emotions, improve our relationships, and increase our overall sense of well-being.

How many of you have expressed gratitude to your parents, friends, or teachers by saying "thank you" for what they have done? Here's a heartwarming story of gratitude:

This little innocent boy is a true embodiment of gratitude. Last year, I applied an iodine solution to some scratches on one of his legs. Ever since then, whenever he sees me, he comes directly to me, shows me his leg, and smiles as a gesture of gratitude. To my amazement, this year in 2023, he came to meet me again and said "thank you" just two days after the start of school.

How many of us went to Temples without knowing exact reason, why we have to take off our shoes and slippers?

Here is a reason.

Desecration of Wearing Shoes Inside the Temples.

Long time ago in Nalanda(India) in the village named Suken, there was a cave. Once while many children were playing inside the cave and suddenly strong wind blew with a blazing fire. The kids started throwing stones at the wind. Instantly there appeared a hungry ghost with deformed leg out of the storm . At the same place, there was a monk who was practicing buddhichita in the area and he
asked the hungry ghost "What kind of bad karma has resulted you to be born in such a conditions?" The ghost replied, "I was a well Khenpo by a name GyalJung from Nalanda. Those days I used to enter temples with shoes and unclean feet. Due to karma of such desecration act I was born with such deformed feet and at the same time I had to suffer in such terrible situations like always being engulfed with burning fire like storm." Curious, the monk asked "For how long do you haveto endure such pain?" The miserable ghost replied that he would have to endue the sufferings for the fifteen thousands years and further he was destined to go to vajra hell. While narrating such sufferings the ghost fainted being unable to fathom his sufferings.
