"Lightning Safety in Bhutan: Lessons from Past Tragedies"
Southern Bhutan is known to be particularly vulnerable to lightning strikes, with several tragic incidents occurring in recent years. It is crucial that we learn from these past events and take appropriate measures to avoid similar accidents in the future.
Reminder 1: "Avoiding Motor Machinery" - In August 2016, a man lost his life at a mining site due to a lightning strike. This serves as a stark reminder to avoid operating motor machinery during thunderstorms, as metal objects and electrical equipment are more likely to attract lightning.
Reminder 2: "Unplugging Electrical Appliances" - Lightning strikes can cause power surges that damage electrical appliances. In March 2018, lightning damaged several appliances in the area, highlighting the importance of unplugging electronic devices during thunderstorms.
Reminder 3: "Seeking Shelter in Safe Areas" - In August 2016, a student lost their life after being struck by lightning while returning to their hostel from a football ground. It is crucial to seek shelter in safe areas during thunderstorms and avoid wide, open spaces and exposed hilltops.
Reminder 4: "Avoiding Tall or Isolated Trees" - Seeking shelter beneath tall or isolated trees during a thunderstorm can be dangerous, as lightning is more likely to strike these objects. In April 2018, a person lost their life while taking shelter under a cypress tree during a thunderstorm.
Lightning strikes can be deadly, but by taking the necessary precautions, we can minimize the risks and prevent future tragedies. It is important to stay informed about lightning safety and to take appropriate measures to protect ourselves and our communities.
