Repost from -Just as I sat down to write this op-ed for about the surging Black maternal mortality crisis in America, I learned died during childbirth at a hospital in LA—the same city where I delivered our baby just 9 months ago.
How many more lives will we lose? How many more motherless babies will it take before we wake up and take action to fix our broken medical system?
Some of us hear these heartbreaking stories and we shut down–understandably so. There are too many. Frankly, the system seems too fu**ed up to fix.
But here’s the part I can’t live with: 84% of these deaths are preventable. That means there are SOLUTIONS.
Studies show that including midwives and doulas in the maternal healthcare system could prevent more than 80% of maternal and infant deaths.
Makes you wonder why we don’t hear more about the life-saving benefits of doulas and midwifery care?
This is why I’m sharing my home-birth story about working with a skilled and loving Black midwife co-owner of . With all the grief and loss swirling around this issue, I think it’s so important to share how much BETTER it can be—to remind us that quality care is possible for us, too. We need to see more examples of how women of color are having safe, PEACEFUL births. And it shouldn’t be considered a luxury in the richest country in the world.
We all need to advocate to make this kind of care and these alternative options accessible for every birthing person—whether they’re birthing in or out of the hospital.
The same system that’s responsible for forcing people into parenthood before they’re ready MUST be held responsible for keeping us alive.
Bc we all deserve to do more than just survive birth. We deserve to THRIVE.

On October 24, 2021, a sculpture honoring Dr. Huey P. Newton was erected on the intersection of Mandela Parkway and Dr. Huey P. Newton Way. This week's guest, Fredrika Newton, worked very closely with sculptor, Dana King, to both bring Huey to life and finally lay him to rest 32 years after his death. On the 55th anniversary of the founding of the Black Panther Party, this became the first permanent art piece installed on Oakland public land that commemorates their legacy. It is only the second monument of a Black Panther in the nation.

This is the result of the political activism on one man. Edward Blum. He is the driving force behind the 2013 decision that impacted the Voting Rights Act, and now this. One disgruntled white man is waging war against Black America, and the court took the bait. This decision is backwards, and ignores disparities in American life and opportunity that have been existed since before the country was founded.

I am always thinking about how to improve and grow as a researcher, writer, and thinker. Despite all the accolades STAMPED FROM THE BEGINNING has fortunately received, I always thought it could have been better. Now it is! Coming in June—the second paperback edition of STAMPED.
The book is a narrative history of how anti-Black racist ideas were created, spread, and deeply rooted in society. Focusing on the producers of racist ideas (rather than the consumers), STAMPED shows that these ideas were produced, not out of ignorance and hate, but to justify racist policies and normalize resulting racial inequity and injustice.
I am proud of this new edition. Striking cover. Clearer writing. Cleaned up bad word choices and typos. A revamped and hugely expanded notes section.
Available on June 20. In time for it to be read alongside the new graphic novel adaptation!
