MAROONS BACK ON TRACK

The Menominee Maroon Varsity Football Team hit the road on Friday night looking to break a two-game losing streak and get back into the win column in Escanaba. With the loss to Gladstone last week, The Maroons (2-2, 1-1) are already in must win situations to have a chance at a Great Northern Conference trophy. A full house of Escanaba Eskymo (1-3, 0-1) faithful fans greeted the Maroons as it was there GNC opener. With Escanaba having the remainder of there schedule, their last 5 games being played on the road, the night was full of festivities that included parent nights, senior night, and homecoming. The Maroons were looking to play spoilers.

For the second straight game Coach Chad Brandt put the ball in the hands of Trevor Theuekauf on fourth down to hope for some magic. Last week against Gladstone, the Maroons were facing 4th and long in Gladstone territory when Theuekauf broke off a 29-yard run to set up the Maroons for there first score of the game at the 1-yard line. This week, they were facing 4th and nine at the Brave 47 when Theurkauf hit Landon Bardowski out of the backfield for a 47-yard catch and run touchdown to start off the scoring for the Maroons. Two players later, the Eskymos fumble the ball away as Kaiden Bell pounced on the loose ball for the first of four turnovers of the game on the home team. It took the Maroons six plays to capture their second touchdown by Bardowski, this time on the ground from three yards out. With a 2-point pass completion from Theuerkauf to Nathan Komp, the Maroons went up 14-0 just past the midway point of the first quarter.

The Eskymos showed their offensive power on the next series with a mix of rushes by Ben Johnson and passes from Casey Bray to score there first Touchdown of the game on their next series. Bray hit Trent Laswon in the numbers as he galloped over the goal line from 15-yards out. Theuerkauf blasted through the line to block the point after attempt, keeping the lead at eight for the Maroons, 14-6 as the first quarter closed.

The Maroon offense sputtered in the second quarter but a strong special teams play, and defensive stopped supported the Maroons. With the Maroons forcing to punt from there own territory, Kaeden Calcari boomed a 52-yard punt and Bardowski went into a full sprint diving to the ball to down it at the one-yard line. Two plays later, Bell recorded his second defensive gem of the night as he picked off a Bray pass and took it 14 yards into the endzone. After an Escanaba fumble on the next series, time expired as both teams went into the Igloo at half time, 20-6 in favor of the Maroons.

Just under two-minutes into the second half, Johnson snuck into the endzone for the Eskymos from 18-yards to pull them within one score of the Maroons after the conversion failed, 20-12. The Maroon offense didn’t sputter as they answered with another rushing score by Bardowski, this time from 15 yards out. Both teams entered a see-saw battle that trickled into the fourth quarter, at one point Escanaba scored three touchdowns in five plays. The Maroons answered every score. An Eskymo highlight ignited the crowd as Bray found Kaiden Brown for a 50-yard scoring strike just under a minute into the fourth. Ben Johnson ran in the two-point conversion to pull them to within eight, 36-28. Ninety seconds later though, the Maroons put out the threat with a highlight of there own as Calcari snapped off a 68-yard touchdown run down the left sideline to answer the Esky score, 42-28.

After an Eskymo fumble that was picked up by the Maroons, Bardowski finished off them off with the final touchdown of the game, a 22-yard run with one-minute and 44 seconds left. When the final horn sounded, Bardowski finished the night with 187 rushing yards with three touchdowns and 74-receiving yards with another TD. In all, he had 261 yards of total offense. Bardowski’s big night put shadows over two other Maroons who went over the century mark. Calcari ended with 152 rushing yards and a TD while Theuerkauf passed for 134-yards and two TDs. The Maroon offensive line made big strides as they improved and controlled the trenches creating big holes for the backfield.

Fireworks launched over the scoreboard after the game as Escanaba celebrated 125 years of football. The Maroons celebrated the victory with the backdrop of fireworks as they keep there GNC hopes alive. The Eskymos honored long time Radio-Announcer Jim Pinar before the game as he had over 50 years of being on the air in Escanaba and the Upper Peninsula, Pinar passed away in 2021.

The Menominee Junior Varsity hosted Escanaba on Thursday losing 56-20. Blake Paasch rushed for a Touchdown and threw for two more; a 70 yarder to Landan Daigneau and a 13-yard pass TD to Clayton Miller.

Menominee will host Milwaukee Academy of Science next Saturday at 3:00.

MAROONS LOSE GNC OPENER

It’s only Week Three of the regular season and the Menominee Maroon Football team is in the “Key Game” category. Friday night the Maroons hosted the Gladstone Braves (3-0) in a crucial Great Northern Conference matchup. The Braves enter the game with an undefeated record that included wins over Calumet 42-13 in there opening game then a 34-20 Victory over the Kingsford Flivvers last week. The Kingsford victory was the first time in over 20 years the Braves knocked off the Flivvers.

The Maroons (1-2), coming off a 61-6 thumping by the Richmond-Burton Rockets last week was looking to get back into the win column in week three. On the first series of the game, the Braves were facing a third-and-two from there own 44-yard line when Menominee’s Isiah Odom bursted through the line to sack QB Nate Young for seven yards forcing a three-and-out. The booming punt sent the Maroons on the field to start at their own 14-yard line. The first series for the Maroons resulted in a three-and-out situation as well, although the result was not the same. The Maroon punt netted just six yards giving the Braves terrific field position at the Menominee 23-yard line. Two players later, they struck first with a 13-yard run by Cole Potier. The Braves went up 8-0 after they converted the two-point conversion with 7:58 left in the first quarter.

The Maroons mounted an 11-play drive on the next series that could have fizzled out deep in Gladstone territory however a 29-yard run by Trevor Theuerkauf kept the drive alive setting them up at the 1-yard line. Landon Bardowski blasted over on the next play for the first and only score by the Maroons. The two-point conversion failed keeping the lead in the hands of the Braves, 8-6 with 2:19 remaining in the first.

The Maroons ran 51 more plays after the touchdown, but the Braves defense stiffened when necessary to stop the Maroons on either 4th down or by forcing a turnover. Gladstone scored the next 22 points that included two touchdown runs by Potier and another by Austin Solis in the closing seconds making the final 28-6. The Braves forced two turnovers on the Maroons while turning the ball over just once themselves; a strip-recovery by Bardowski as they were looking to push it in at the one-yard line.

It’s the second week in a row the undersized Maroons faced a bull of a threat at the Running Back position. Potier, a 6-foot 215lb Senior finished off the night with 206 yards on 21 carries that resulted in three touchdowns for Gladstone. The Braves are now 3-0 on the season but more importantly 2-0 in the Great Northern Conference with Escanaba and Marquette left on their GNC Schedule.

Menominee travels to Escanaba next week (Friday) for a 6:30 cdt. kick-off. Escanaba is 1-2 coming off a 33-28 win over Petoskey. The Maroon JV’s fells to Gladstone 56-6 on Thursday.

MAROONS LOSE HOME OPENER

The Menominee Maroons opened Walton Blesch Field for the 2022 football season on Friday. Making a 3.5-hour drive through the state of Wisconsin, the Maroons welcomed the Rockets from Richmond-Burton High School in Illinois. A traditional powerhouse 4A school ranked #5 in the latest AP football poll, a team that has only lost once in the last 3 years

A powerhouse they were, as they marched the ball on the opening series at will for 46 yards on 5 plays until there only blemish of the game happened, a fumble that was recovered by Kaiden Bell. The Maroons countered with 5 plays of there own mustering up 25 yards until they were forced to punt. Two players later for R-B, Toby Quentrall-Quezada broke free up the middle for a 46-yard touchdown run to start off the scoring. The first play of the next series, Jack Martens picked off a Theurkauf pass at the 40-yard line. Four plays later R-B pounded in another rushing Touchdown as Steven Siegl scored from five yards out. The PAT failed, putting the Rockets on top 13-0 with 4:46 left in the first quarter. The next series wasn’t any better for the Maroons as they fumbled the ball away for their second turnover of the game. It only took one play for Joseph Miller to go into the air and connect with Siegel who snuck out of the back field for a 29-yard touchdown reception. After another missed PAT, the Rockets went up 19-0. The Maroons had there only spart of the game on the ensuing kickoff as Kaeden Calcari hit a burst of speed on an 80-yard KO return to the four-yard line. It took the Maroons three plays but eventually Calcari put the ball over the goal line from a yard out to give the Maroons there only points of the day. The two-point attempt failed brining the game to a score of 19-6 to end the third quarter.

Last week against Chicago Urban Prep/Bronzeville the Rockets went up 42-0 scoring six touchdowns. Four offensively and two on defense. Siegel scored four of the six touchdowns in the opening frame.

The remaining three quarters were dominated by Richmond-Burton out of there Wing-T offense. The halftime score ended up being 47-6 after a 50-yarding interception return for a Touchdown by Jack Matens. The Martens INT triggered a running clock that would go into effect at the start of the second half. When the dust settled the final score showed 61-6 in favor of the Rockets. This was the most points given up by the Maroons since a 62-28 loss in Kingsford in 2018. R-B rushed for 345 yards with a total offense of 462 yards. The Maroons amassed only 55 yards of total offense with four turnovers.

Menominee will host the 2-0 Gladstone Braves to open up the GNC next Friday at 6:30. Gladstone defeated Calumet Week 1; 42-13 and won over Kingsford Thursday 34-20.

MAROONS WIN 116TH M&M GAME!

Excitement was in the air and questions were answered Friday night when the final horn sounded at Higley Stadium. With Marinette coming off a 41-0 win the previous week against Green Bay East, their fist win since the last game in 2020 against Peshtigo and Menominee having a new head coach, the biggest question prior to the game was “who will win the M&M Game?” At 9:30 Friday night the question was answered, Menominee.

In the beginning for Marinette, it was exciting. After receiving the opening Kick Off, Leahland Bertrand darted up the middle and cut left as he opened up the game with a 61-yard run before Kaeden Calcari caught up to him at the 4-yard line for Menominee. Two players later, Nick Baldwin hit Logan Paris for a 6-yard strike to open the scoring not even a minute into the game. The extra point attempt failed as the Marine fans were still celebrating the opening score thinking this was there year.

The celebration was short lived as a twelve play 65-yard drive by the Maroons took 4 minutes and 51 seconds and answered the Marine touchdown. Trevor Theuerkauf capped off the drive with a 27-yard touchdown run. He then put in the 2-point conversion to give the Maroons the lead for good as they put up 40 straight unanswered points on the Marines.

The Marines attempted to answer the next series, but the drive fizzled out forcing them to punt. The tidal wave of momentum completely shifted to Menominee as Calcari picked up the punt off the bounce and sprinted 80-yards to the end zone down the left sideline. Theuerkauf then hit Kaden Starzynski for another 2-point conversion to pump the lead up to double digits, 16-6 with 2:49 remaining in the first.

In the third series of the game for the Marines, after three plays they faced a fourth down situation at midfield. Electing to go for it, Ethan Doubek came up just a yard short and they turned it over on downs. Two plays later, first year head coach Chad Brandt went to the air and Theuerkauf hit Starzynski in stride down the middle of the field for a 46-yard touchdown with 10 seconds left in the first. Theuerkauf then hit Matt Mellinger for another successful two-point conversion as the Maroons jumped out 24-6 to close off the quarter. The Maroons forced the first of two turnovers by Marinette on a Theuerkauf interception with only 99 seconds left in the half. Six plays later, Theuerkauf used the air again, this time he threw a laser to the five-yard line with Calcari hauling it in then using his moves to put it over the goal line as time expired. Another successful 2-point conversion run by Theuerkauf put Menominee up at half time 32-6.

With Menominee winning the toss to start the game, they elected to defer. By doing so, the Maroons would receive the opening kick off to start the second half. They opened up the third quarter controlling the line by using eleven plays and going 72 yards in 6 minutes & 47 seconds to tack on the final score of the game. This time Theurkauf hit Landon Bardowski on a 13-yard touchdown pass. Again, Theuefkauf ran in the 2-point conversion as the Maroons lit up the scoreboard with the eventual final score, 40-6. Menominee Hunter Thronson-Westby recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter for the second turnover of the game by Marinette. The Maroons did not have a turnover to start the season.

With both teams low on numbers at the Junior/Senior levels, the rosters were made up of a lot of Freshman and Sophomores. Both grade levels got a lot of field time with some underclassman getting the starting nod for there first M&M Game experience. First year Menominee Head Coach Chad Brandt earns his first head coaching win for the Maroons, a tough opening start in front of a M&M Game crowd.

Menominee now leads the series 58-51-7 and has won 20 of the last 23 meetings going back to the year 2000. Nex Friday the Maroons will host Richmond-Burton (IL) and the Marines will host Kewaunee.
