Sharing knowledge!

Correct Silage-Making,
According To Experts

While I had been involved in raising chicken and small ruminants for decades, I do not and cannot claim to be an expert, especially in animal nutrition.

Recently, however, I read so many discussions on how to prepare Silage for both large and small ruminants and I feel I should share whatever knowledge I have about Silage-making.

It was Outstanding OFW Arnel Corpuz, who had long years of experience in managing a 50,000-head Wagyu feedlot in Australia who introduced me to Silage-making using Sorghum stalks and leaves left in the field after harvest.

Today, I feed my small herd of goats with nothing else but Sorghum silage.

In response to numerous queries on how to prepare Sorghum silage (also Corn, Napier and other roughage materials), I am sharing here a video taken last year showing my farm workers filling up silage bags.

But first, let us define what "Silage" is.

"Silage is a high moisture fodder that farmers use to feed their domestic animals, especially during the dry season made by chopping crops (Corn, Sorghum, Napier, etc.) into small pieces and then storing them," according to information available in the web.

Here are some important pointers in preparing Silage:

1. Silage could be kept in anaerobic bags or in bunkers and, when properly sealed, could be stored for up to 5 years thus ensuring the farmer of sustainable supply of feeds;

2. The most ideal Silage materials are Corn, Sorghum and Napier or Pakchong. Other materials could also be considered in the absence of these recommended materials although their nutrient contents would be considerably lower. These options include Sugarcane Tops and Rice Straws which need to be fortified with micro minerals;

3. Contrary to some suggestions that molasses and other materials could be mixed with Silage in bags or bunkers, mixing other materials will spoil it making it inedible for the animals;

4. Silage must be compacted inside the bags or bunkers to make sure that there is no or little oxygen left in the bunker or the bags. Allowing oxygen inside the containers will prevent fermentation and lead to the rotting and decay of the materials;

5. After taking the Silage from bags and bunkers, it must be covered or closed right away to prevent spoilage;

6. Any supplementary nutrients or materials should only be added to the Silage before feeding by using a mixer when the herd is huge or manually when the farmer only has a few heads;

7. Silage-feeding should be consistent which means that any change or modification in the materials used to feed the ruminants must go through a transition process;

8. When transitioning from one Silage to a new material, an 8-day adjustment period should be observed, to wit: first 2 days - 25% of new Silage and 75% of old; second 2 days - 50-50% of new and old Silage; third 2 days - 75% of new and 25% of old; fourth 2 days- 100% of new Silage material.

These pointers that I am sharing with the followers of this page who are into raising of ruminants, especially goats, I learned through experience and mainly from my brother, Arnel Corpuz, who had been kind to share the knowledge he gained from years of feeding Ruminants.

Do you know?...

This product contains Monosodium glutamate (MSG) or sodium glutamate, a natural flavor enhancer found in many foods. Despite previous claims of side effects, recent research has shown no adverse effects. We avoid brands like Ajinomoto and Vedan but still consume MSG in noodles and chicken-flavored seasoning cubes. Those who tarnished the reputation of this product did it unjustly.

As Nigeria is getting tougher. And one needs to engage in small or big farming to sustain his or her income and in doing that. the below will give you an insight in choosing the right manure for your farm.

Discover the nutrient composition of animal manure:

🔷Various livestock manures contain differing levels of key plant nutrients, namely nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

🔷Notably, chicken manure, particularly from layers, boasts the highest nitrogen content, whereas goat manure has the least.

🔷Concerning phosphorus, chicken manure also exhibits a relatively higher concentration compared to other types, whereas sheep manure contains relatively higher levels of potassium.

🔷Both chicken and pig manure offer higher overall nutrient values compared to cow manure.

🔷Chicken manure is abundant in potassium, while pig manure is rich in phosphorus.

🔷Interestingly, rabbit manure contains higher nitrogen and phosphorus levels than sheep, goat, chicken, or cow manure.

🔷Organic manures generally release nutrients at a slower pace compared to inorganic fertilizers.

🔷When selecting the appropriate manure for crop production, opt for the type that supplies the majority of essential nutrients in comparatively larger quantities.

Reflections of Week

As we start a new day, let's take a moment to review the events unfolding from Sunday to yesterday, Friday. Among the headlines dominating the news were tragic incidents of mass/school kidnappings and the solemn memorial service/tribute for Wigwe.

Among these headlines, one theme stands out—the loss of a single individual, pitted against the uncertain fate of over 280+ persons. While the masses resorted to familiar tactics of complaint, blame, and baseless criticism, exemplified by yesterday's trending search "Wigwe's daughter shaking hands with VP Shetima," the elites showcased a different response.

Despite their differences in tribe, religion, and ethnicity, the elites, political class, and high-profile figures came together in mourning, demonstrating a unity rarely seen. However, this unity often dissolves in the realm of politics, where they exploit divisions among the masses to maintain power and control.

This division underscores a deeper issue—it's not solely about government shortcomings but also about the mindset and behavior of the masses. The very services we demand from the government—education, healthcare, civil service—are often staffed by those who complain the most. Have we considered our own contributions to these sectors?

In essence, let's strive to transcend the role of perpetual complainers and instead become impactful leaders within our spheres of influence. Rather than seeking external saviors, let's recognize that our own actions are the key to driving meaningful change. Let's stop complaining and blaming because in the end If you are looking for a savior, it is only yourself that will appear.
Have a good weekend all.

Business management Tip

A total stranger can handle your business better than your family member.

To succeed in business, build your business outside your family. If you want to help your brother, sister, or even cousins, do it separately from your business.
Don't use your business to settle them unless the business was grown and has a starting Foundation with family members (siblings , relatives etc). 99.9 percent of the time when business is being run with family emotional entitlements, they will wreck the business. Only a few have the capability to stand the business and see it succeed.

Your siblings can wreck your business, and nothing will happen; the most they will say is, "It's better a family members eat your money than an outsider." This is the highest judgment statement you can get.

But a total stranger can't do such to your business in most cases. That's why most outstanding corporate firms do heir outside to match their business running models capacity.
In fact, you will not even have the mind arresting your sibling if you see them stealing from you without feeling guilty about what the world will say, but you can do so to an outsider.

Most businesses that runs through the above models of operations eventually disappeared in a short time.
As the economy is hitting hard and most are jakpaing, the ones with strong heads who,or still believe here can be their gold mine ought to take their business management very seriously...to avoid "I once owned this kind of thing but judas run it down".

*OUR BRETHREN WITH VEHICLE/CAR PLEASE BE INFORMED*

*Nigerian Police are at it again. This time around is what they call POLICE CENTRAL MOTOR REGISTRY INFORMATION SYSTEM (CMRIS).*

*It costs 5k and it is a yearly thing (this was introduced by President Tinubu). A friend and colleague of mine parted with 40k for not having it when he was stopped at Police check point on a highway somewhere in the Southeast. They collected the 40k with abeg.*

*Something that would have been done with not more than 6k. If you have not done yours, it takes about 20 minutes to do it online with the following information, your NIN, email address, phone number, vehicle registration number, the chassis number, the engine number, the vehicle colour, year of manufacture, model, make of the vehicle etc.*

*Just go to the NPF CMRIS website:*
