AI Needs You: book recommendation
(author: Verity Harding)
This was a very interesting read as it discusses AI from a very different perspective!
The author, Verity Harding, shares examples of how AI is very much like past ‘radical’ inventions–driven by politics and profit–and those past technologies evolved due to the public’s involvement.
Did you know...?
- When in vitro fertilization (IVF) was first introduced, it raised many ethical and moral questions, much like AI.
- Space exploration, the Internet and AI were initially developed for use in warfare.
- The Internet and AI have been significantly influenced by politics and commercial profiting agendas.
- AI has been used to accuse innocent students of cheating, accuse innocent people of crimes, determine who gets jobs and loans, etc.
And because ordinary people got involved, did you know...?
- The ethical and moral concerns were addressed in IVF regulations. The book discusses how AI can do the same.
- Space exploration evolved from war-driven to peaceful intentions in the Outer Space Treaty? The author explains how AI can evolve similarly.
- The Internet shifted from US control to global governance by ICANN? Find out how AI can make a similar shift.
AI Needs You uncovers how the general public significantly influenced the trajectory of three past technologies that were initially on a questionable path, and how AI can do the same.
We all have a voice in how AI is built and used.
AI needs an inclusive approach for engineering and regulation, so that it serves the public and does no harm.
