AI Needs You: book recommendation
(author: Verity Harding)

This was a very interesting read as it discusses AI from a very different perspective!

The author, Verity Harding, shares examples of how AI is very much like past ‘radical’ inventions–driven by politics and profit–and those past technologies evolved due to the public’s involvement.

Did you know...?
- When in vitro fertilization (IVF) was first introduced, it raised many ethical and moral questions, much like AI.
- Space exploration, the Internet and AI were initially developed for use in warfare.
- The Internet and AI have been significantly influenced by politics and commercial profiting agendas.
- AI has been used to accuse innocent students of cheating, accuse innocent people of crimes, determine who gets jobs and loans, etc.

And because ordinary people got involved, did you know...?
- The ethical and moral concerns were addressed in IVF regulations. The book discusses how AI can do the same.
- Space exploration evolved from war-driven to peaceful intentions in the Outer Space Treaty? The author explains how AI can evolve similarly.
- The Internet shifted from US control to global governance by ICANN? Find out how AI can make a similar shift.

AI Needs You uncovers how the general public significantly influenced the trajectory of three past technologies that were initially on a questionable path, and how AI can do the same.

We all have a voice in how AI is built and used.
AI needs an inclusive approach for engineering and regulation, so that it serves the public and does no harm.

Don't ignore edge cases

26.4 million people actively shop on ASOS(dot)com An online fashion retailer.

In 2021, ASOS(dot)com was named one of the least accessible websites. (ToolTester analyzed over 150 of the world's most popular websites.)

ASOS assumed accessibility was an edge case. It impacts only 15% of people, right?

15% of ASOS's 26.4 million customers is... 3,960,000 edge cases!

That ‘edge case’ was a lot of potential customers. ASOS quickly took steps to improve their accessibility.

What ‘edge cases’ are you ignoring?

"They are not edge cases. They are human beings, and we owe them our best work." — Mike Monteiro, Ruined by Design

The Creative Act

Music Producer, Rick Rubin, wrote this gem of a book! Have you read it?

If you’ve never heard of him. He was co-founder of Def Jam Records and produced for artists such as:
* Beastie Boys (2nd photo, he’s holding the boom-box)
* Run DMC
* Johnny Cash
* Red Hot Chili Peppers
* Jay-Z (3rd photo)
* Adele

Note: The book talks about creativity in regards to art, not design. ‘Art’ being work where we have full control, where we can create for ourselves. ‘Design’ being work for an employer or client, where are work is essentially a service to others.

That out the way…

Rick talks about
* starting with an open mind
* letting ideas flow without preconceived notions
* stepping away when you feel stuck
* how we’re ‘inspired’ by others; all our work is truly a collaboration

Highly motivating and so many nuggets! Highly recommend adding to your 2024 list of books to read.
