Episode Three: the tūturiwhatu 🪶

It’s finally here! In March I was able to join the DOC New Zealand Southern dotterel recovery team while they were banding birds in Awarua Bay (you may have seen these birds get some air time on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver with Forest and Bird’s Bird of the Century recently 👀)

The NZ Southern dotterel used to be found all over Te Waipounamu/the South Island of New Zealand, but now there are only 126 of these special birds left in the wild, and the recovery team is doing all they can to bring these birds back from the brink.

If you want to learn about how these small ‘shore birds’ breed on the mountaintops of Rakiura/Stewart Island or what it’s like trying to catch and band these wee cuties, dove right on into episode three of From the Brink 😎

This is Yasmine. She’s the only adult kākāpō I saw on Anchor Island, and it was her nest that featured on the first episode of

Kākāpō are fantastic camouflagers, and can be difficult to spot amongst the brush (give “spot the kākāpō” a go here: https://www.instagram.com/p/Cd7jlNMrvrJ/?igshid=Y2ZmNzg0YzQ=). It’s no wonder I was only able to spot one against the brown earth!

Camouflage came in handy when kākāpō were hiding from avian predators like the Haast eagle, who would hunt by sight. But mammalian predators like stoats, rats and cats hunt mostly by smell, so a still kākāpō trying to camouflage is a sitting duck.

This is largely why kākāpō can only be found on offshore islands in New Zealand, because it’s easier to keep them predator-free. Though with Predator Free 2050 approaching, the next generation may be able to see kākāpō return to mainland where they belong.

Episode 1: The kākāpō 🦜🌿

Earlier this year I volunteered with the Kākāpō Recovery Programme on Anchor Island with the help of , and now I'm so excited I get to share some of that experience with you.

From waves lapping at the shore to birds singing in the forest. From their biology, to their history, to what we're doing to bring them back from the brink of extinction. This episode is all about these adorable moss chickens: the mighty kākāpō.
