Did you look at your BUSINESS RECORDS for October yesterday?

Did you check how much sales you made? How many new customers you served?

How many old customers came back to make another purchase?

Did you check your insights on social media? How many people did you reach? Did your engagement go up or down?

Did you check how effective your marketing was?

Did you run ads? How much did you spend? Did it yield results? How many DM enquiries did you get? How many were you able to close?

Do you have staff? How was their performance last month? Who did a great job and who could have performed better?

Are there any gaps in their skills? Do they need training? Do you need to fill up a vacant role? Are they handling too many tasks so much so that it's making them less effective?

As a Business Owner, you can't run away from reviewing your business' performance.

Okay fine, you can run away. But you shouldn't!!!

If you don't review, you won't be able to SPOT PROBLEM AREAS that need fixing.

LOCATION TARGETING STRATEGIES

A key part of running more effective ads is targeting the right locations. Let's look at two location strategies:

1} THE BIG FISH, SMALL POND STRATEGY:

With this strategy, you narrow down your location to one or a few cities close to you and focus all your advertising budget there.

Imagine that there's a food brand called Foodgasm and the brand is located in Port Harcourt Rivers State.

Chef Piriye should only target Port Harcourt, Onne and Bonny Island in her ads.

These are areas she can easily cover and her goal is to be a big fish in these small ponds.

She wants to run ads consistently in just these locations until she is well-known and the go-to person for tasty meals of all kinds!

Use this strategy if your ad budget is really small or if you want to dominate one area before moving on to another.

2} THE DEEP TARGETING, WIDER NET STRATEGY:

This strategy shares similarities with strategy 1, but there's a key difference.

Instead of focusing on cities, you go really deep with your location targeting and select neighbourhoods, estates and other much smaller areas.

For example, instead of targeting Port Harcourt, Onne, and Bonny Island, Piriye will target:

Golf Estate, Woji Housing Estate, Evo Road G.R.A.

Now, these are neighbourhoods in Port Harcourt City and here's the catch with using this strategy:

When you target these specific locations, your goal is to attract people who live or frequent such places.

If you have an estate or area in your city that's a hotspot for affluent people or you want to target people right next to your store or address for easier delivery, then you can go really deep with your targeting like this.

HOWEVER! (Yes, I have to shout it.)

Because these locations are not very broad, your audience size will be small, really small.

And here's where the 'wider net' part comes in.

When using this strategy, DON'T USE ANY INTERESTS, DEMOGRAPHICS OR BEHAVIOURS.

Just stick with broad targeting otherwise, you'll reduce your audience size even more and your ads may not run at all.

Even if they run, they might be more expensive than normal.

This strategy is best if you want to attract a specific type of people and you know where they hang out.

You can also use this to drive more people to visit your store by targeting the closest locations to you.

Finally, you can use this strategy when running 'free delivery' offers. Simply target neighbourhoods close to you so that the delivery cost is not such a huge expense for your business.

These are 2 location strategies that you can try and I will recommend that you start off with one of these if your marketing budget is limited.

Some Basic DON'Ts When Running Ads

1) DON'T use a new Facebook account to attempt to run ads:

Notice how I said 'attempt'? That's because Facebook will restrict that account immediately and most times, they don't release it.

Ensure that the Facebook account you're using for your or your client is at least 3-6 months old (at least oh).

And it should be active. Profile picture, friends, some activity here and there, etc.

2) DON'T have a Facebook account for your business:

This one drives me crazy.

So let's say I have a Facebook account called Super Hot Babe Piriye.

Instead of creating a page for my business, I will now open a brand new Facebook account and give it my business name.

That is a recipe for disaster because:

A) Only people are allowed to have Facebook accounts. Pets, businesses, communities, etc are to create pages or groups.

B) You can't verify the identity of that business: If you try to run ads with that account and they restrict the account, what will you do when they ask you to verify your identity?

Do you have a PVC with your business name and picture? How about NIN? šŸ™ƒ

You'll be doomed, my friend. Doomed!

3) DON'T use a name that's not your Government name:

You see that 'Super Hot Babe Piriye' I mentioned above?

A name like that will put me in hot water. Facebook wants you to use your 'unsexy' Government name. The way it is on your birth certificate sef šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

It'll even make life easy for you when it's time to verify your identity because your first and surname will match.

So please, remove the fancy names and put your Government name there. You can add nicknames to your profile and those other informal names can go there!

4) DON'T be caught without 2FA: I mean, do I need to explain?

2FA is a form of added protection for you.

If you don't want to lose your account and have your name changed to Priyanka Chopra to be used to scam people, then 2FA is a must.

You can simply use their phone number and it's so easy to set up.

Plus, it's now a REQUIREMENT for all advertisers, which I fully support.

I can go on and on about the DON'Ts of ads, but let me stop with these 4.

Ah, human behaviour strikes again.

Youā€™re selling to other people, not robots or smartphones.

Itā€™s easy to forget when youā€™re just punching in targeting options and setting up your ads without actually seeing anyone.

One thing I try to do is to place myself in the shoes of the people Iā€™m trying to target.

If Iā€™m targeting stay-at-home mums, whenā€™s the best time to reach them?

Will they be online 24/7? Of course, not.

Will they need to run the buying decision by their partner, extending their conversion timeline? Possibly.

Do all these easily forgotten things affect the results of my ad? YES!

Donā€™t discount the effect of consumer behaviour on any marketing activity, paid ads included!

Yes, it can get you lots of visibility and potential customers.

Yes, it also gives aggrieved customers an avenue to amplify their bad experience with you.

Yes, it can help you build a community around your business.

Yes, it can also alienate you from people in certain circles as they only need one person to have a rude, scam or horrible encounter with your brand for the entire gang to stay clear.

Social media is a double-edged sword.

Ensure that as you push for more visibility and sales, you also have systems in place to ensure that your audience and customers are actually pleased with your service.

Ensure that thereā€™s only 'good' to be amplified when it comes to your brand.

On this video shoot day, everything was going wrong.

I worked late into the night and woke up early, so I was already exhausted.

I finally managed to pick myself up and start setting up and then my village people struck.

I hit my left foot against a chair and an old injury on my toe started bleeding again.

At that point, I just wanted to sit on the floor and cry but alas, I had to put on my big girl panties.

I cleaned up the injury and finished setting up.

Next problem: My scarf refused to cooperate with me. I had to keep tying and retying before it finally sat put.

Oya now, start recording. I was tongue-tied.

Yes, I usually have so many bloopers while shooting but today was so bad.

Itā€™s like my brain was daring me to see if I can really handle this shoot today.

I was like ā€˜Bish, you donā€™t control me. So get with the programme!'

I finally found my groove and recorded every single video on my shoot list.

Phew. On days like this, I ask myself why Iā€™m not a Sicilian Tycoonā€™s Introverted Bride.
