Airport workers reject pay offer ahead of busy period

It was confirmed by Unite the union earlier today that around 300 ICTS Central Search members based at Glasgow and Aberdeen airports have rejected a pay offer from the company.

The workers at both facilities rejected a basic pay increase of 4% backdated to January 2024 and a £500 one-off payment.

Now, the union has said they have 'no option' but to move towards initiating industrial action ballots ahead of the summer holiday rush.

The workers deal with passengers directly in the security search areas and process them for flights. They also carry out mobile patrols, control access posts, screen all deliveries and deal with emergency services at the airport.

Glasgow student accommodation plans awaiting approval

Plans have been submitted for a new student accommodation in Glasgow's Broomielaw area.

If approved, the mixed-use development will see 500 student rooms as well as ground floor commercial space built inside the empty city centre building on Carrick Street.

The brownfield site is currently home to the vacant offices of GAP Group but could soon be taken over by developers Valeo Management Europe who will operate the site under the name Valeo, LIV Student.

The proposal submitted to Glasgow City Council will address the shortfall in student beds in the city, after a recent study claimed that the city has the largest imbalance between supply and demand for Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) accommodation in the UK.

FAI into two toddlers deaths sets court date

A preliminary hearing for the investigation into the deaths of two toddlers who died at a hospital has been set for the 17th of March 2025 at Glasgow Sheriff Court.
This will last until the 28th before a further preliminary takes place in August.

Cailyn Newlands (23 months old) and Sonny Campbell (22 months old) died at Glasgow’s Royal Hospital for Children on December 6, 2016.

The inquiry will focus on the circumstances of Sonny and Cailyn’s deaths, with particular focus on guidance, training, the medical assessments of the children and whether the children should have been assessed by a senior doctor or consultant.

The purpose of a Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) includes determining the cause of death; the circumstances in which the deaths occurred, and to establish what, if any, reasonable precautions could have been taken, and could be implemented in the future, to minimise the risk of future deaths in similar circumstances.

Unlike criminal proceedings, FAIs are inquisitorial in nature, and are used to establish facts rather than to apportion blame.

Police hope to minimise disruption as Celtic celebrates title win

Police Scotland will look to minimise any disruption ahead of Celtic FC supporters gathering in the city centre this weekend.

Officers anticipate the city will be busier than usual with large crowds of supporters celebrating the team’s Scottish Premiership win as they’re expected to loft the trophy following this Saturday’s game against St Mirren FC

In previous years, fans have gathered in the Trongate area in Merchant City to celebrate the title win.

Police have said it is working closely with Glasgow City Council to minimise disruption to the community and confirmed a “proportionate policing plan” is in place.

Summer padel festival comes to Glasgow's Braehead Shopping Centre

Padel, the hottest sport in the world is coming to Glasgow this summer thanks to global sports brand Decathlon UK and UK-based padel operator Soul Padel

Glasgow building overhaul paused due to high costs

Plans to transform the Met Tower, described as one of Glasgow’s ugliest building were shelved as it would cost £60 million.

The building was due to be overhauled and turned into a "digital and tech hub", costing millions of pounds, but it may now be scaled back to a residential option due to the challenging economy.

Owners Bruntwood SciTech brought forward striking plans to refurbish the eyesore and build an interconnecting second 10-storey tower at the site.

The company said at the time 200,000 sq ft of office space would serve as a "dedicated digital and tech hub in the heart of Glasgow."

Two police officers were injured in an incident in Renfrewshire which saw a 27 year old man running with a chainsaw.

The incident took place on Glasgow Road, Paisley, which also saw a vehicle crash into a stationary police car. Footage shared on social media shows a man pursuing an officer while brandishing the weapon around 1pm.

Images from the scene show a police car crashed through a garden wall and a dark-coloured Volkswagen with a badly-damaged front.

Police Scotland has said the injured officers were not seriously hurt and the incident is not being treated as terror related.

MSP believes Glasgow could host the 2026 Commonwealth Games

Health Secretary Neil Gray MSP believes Scotland could host the 2026 Commonwealth Games without cash from the public purse being used to pay for the event.

This statement comes following the news that organisers are looking for a new host city following Victoria pulling out due to rising costs.

Mr Gray says that cash from the Commonwealth Games Federation plus “commercial income” from the event, could cover costs.

The Scottish Government has already been in talks with Commonwealth Games Scotland and Glasgow City Council about the event returning to the city which hosted it in 2014.

Activists blockade BAE Systems plant

Roads have started to clear after activist blockaded BAE Systems in the Southside of Glasgow.

The protest caused travel chaos on Govan Road as demonstrators called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and an end to the ties between the UK and Israeli arms industries.

It comes as BAE, who are the UK’s leading military manufacturer, is producing Type 26 Frigate ships for the Royal Navy, which will be fitted with armour developed by Israel after construction.

The protesters were seen holding signs that said "stop arming genocide" and "This Factory Arms". Some pictures from the scene show members of staff waiting across the road as protesters blockade the entrance.

Glasgow W***y Wonka Experience inspires event in LA

A W***y Wonka experience has opened in Los Angeles inspired by a similar event in Glasgow that left attendees furious and demanding refunds.

The one-night-only pop-up event was held in a similarly uninspiring warehouse, with a few candy cane props lining the ruffled green carpet entrance.

Attendees were invited to "step into a world of pure imagination at W***y's Chocolate Experience Los Angeles as chocolate memes come to life", and were given two free jelly beans per $44 (£35) ticket.

Unlike the Glasgow experience, the LA event was described as not intended for children with Golden Ticket holders were offered THC-infused cotton candy and Oompa Loompa-themed cocktails and were treated to more explicit stage performances.

Event organisers said they intend to donate the proceeds from Sunday's experience to US charity the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Storm Kathleen causes disruption across the UK

Glasgow continues to be hit with heavy rain as Storm Kathleen sweeps across the UK. The Met Office predicts continued rain and rising winds until 10pm tonight.

A yellow weather warning has then been issued for Saturday as winds of up to 50-60 miles an hour expected across the UK.

The severe weather has already led to travel disruption this morning, with a number of rail services cancelled due to flooding including services between Glasgow & Edinburgh via Shotts.

Network Rail staff are on site to fix the situation “as quickly as possible” while ScotRail says they have requested replacement buses. There are also speed restrictions in place due to heavy rain.

Glasgow residents unprepared for floods

New data reveals that residents living in Glasgow are worryingly the most unconcerned about flooding in the UK, leaving their homes at risk from flood damage.

The research conducted by insurance experts Howden Insurance analysed nationwide monthly Google keyword volumes for flood-related terms to determine which cities are the most concerned about flooding and the recent increased rainfall.

The study examined the number of searches on 16 flood-related terms across 12 months.

This research comes following February being confirmed as the wettest on record and more residents than ever have started to worry about flooding and the damage it can cause to property.

On average residents in the UK search for flood-related terms 179 times a month per 100,000 residents. Glasgow residents have been found to search for flood-related terms just 49 times a month per 100,000 residents.

Police issues warning about Royal Mail scam

Police have issued warnings to the local community regarding scammers that are impersonating Royal Mail staff and putting notes through doors saying that they couldn't deliver a package.

The note includes a QR code that you are asked to scan to rebook the delivery, saying that if you do not, the package will be returned to the sender.

The QR code leads to a malicious website using Royal Mail branding which asks you to enter personal and payment details.

The police have issued some guidance to help the public recognise potential scammers. People should never scan a QR code from an unfamiliar or unexpected source.

If the message appears to have been sent by a company or organisation, visit their legitimate website to make a payment or update details rather than scanning a code.

Royal Mail and other legitimate parcel delivery services will never contact you unexpectedly to ask for personal or payment details.
