Building Your Brand

Visual branding is crucial for designers, and creating a consistent visual identity is essential. Your brand reinforces professionalism, expertise and recognition, and sets you apart in a crowded creative landscape. DES309 Design Capstone is the course for creating your professional branding identity.

Crafting Careers

At UniSC, design courses aim to bridge the gap between academia and real-world demands of creative industries. Programs immerse students in practical scenarios, work-integrated learning, and industry placements.

Delve discusses potential career pathways and the creative resources available at UniSC.

It is important to take a moment to pay attention, appreciating the animals and places we live amongst.

Inspiration and appreciation are essential for forging a future that is sustainable for all living things, and to conform to SDG Life on Land to reduce the degradation of ecosystems and halt the loss of biodiversity, protecting and preventing the extinction of threatened species.

Delve speaks with one UniSC student and photographer who uses her craft to inspire people, reminding them of the beauty and fragility of the natural world.

Design students use animation to get the message out about the Sustainable Development Goals.

Animation and Visualisation, DES232, teaches techniques like rotoscoping to create animations for information. This is done by drawing over live-action video footage, frame-by-frame, to make lifelike movements in characters.

We had a discussion with three of our designers about DES232, for some insights into the course and the first task—producing an animated sequence about one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Sustainability is progressively being implemented in business strategies globally. Designers can contribute through the concept of the triple bottom line—People, Planet, Profit—ensuring a positive impact on people’s lives, safeguarding the planet’s resources, as well as enhancing profitability.

Sustainable design has been woven into the design programs at UniSC to ensure students learn eco-conscious design principles. UniSC encourages research and innovation in sustainable design, and graduates gain the skills and the passion to drive positive change, leading the way towards a sustainable and harmonious future.

Design is not just about visually appealing products, it’s a strategic tool to attract and engage consumers.

For female consumers, design can significantly impact gender inequality, with unconscious biases and stereotypes.

Add to that the pink tax, charging higher prices for products and services marketed to women, it’s an additional financial burden which amplifies the existing income gap.

UniSC encourages students to consider the impacts of design across the SDGs, and Delve looks at ways to be inclusive and reduce the gender inequality impact.

Students taking DES200 – Design Futures – are thinking beyond the traditional and looking at speculative and visionary design.

Two student groups presented their projects at the Biodesign Challenge Summit as finalists.

One group explored seaweed-based textiles to combat fast fashion. As it is regenerative and circular in design, it connects with SDG12 Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG13 Climate Action.

The other group developed a prototype for a vertical aeroponic farming kit called Vaero, which was an interactive and stackable kit. It requires less water, land, resources and pesticides – an example of SDG15 Life on Land.

Designers and creatives face emerging challenges with the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in creative practices.

There are concerns about job displacement and devaluation of human creativity, with the fear that AI might replace people in tasks thought uniquely human.

However, AI presents an opportunity to embrace a powerful tool and valuable partner, complementing and enhancing rather than replacing.

Delve looks at ways that designers can use AI to assist with their work.
