Fritz Truran was an all American Cowboy. The Southern California cowboy competed in rodeos throughout the 1930s and early 1940s. He served as a Marine in the pacific theater during WWII. During one of his leaves, he went back to Hawaii and won the Hawaiian Bronc Riding Championship! Fritz fought his way through the bloody battles of Midway and Tarawa, but was unfortunately KIA on Iwo Jima after 10 days of heavy fighting.

What an incredible American and a true embodiment of the Cowboy way. If you want to learn more about Fritz, you can read about him on the website. He was inducted into their hall of fame in 1961.

Forget wild horse races, why don’t we have wild zebra races at rodeos?? The truth is, zebras are flat out mean! Folks have been trying to break them to ride for centuries, but their lack of herd mentality, fear of natural predators, and willingness to fight instead of flee have all made breaking zebras an incredibly difficult prospect.
However, it is not impossible. Zebras have been broke to ride and even more successfully as pack animals but they lack the sturdiness of mules and their aggression makes them suboptimal for riding. What do you think? Could a few good hands with years of c**t breaking experience break a zebra?

The Rural Electrification Act of 1936 brought innovation to millions of Americans. Future president LBJ, a champion of the bill in congress, noted that all of the women of the rural hill country where he grew up had become hunched over with age from years of back breaking labor and hauling water to their homes. He wanted to ensure no future generations had to endure such a fate.

The Kokernot ( ) Ranch, known for its iconic “o6” brand was founded by the Kokernot family in the early 20th century. The ranch sits on hundreds of thousands of acres near Alpine, Texas. The ranch still operates today breeding Hereford cattle, operating guided hunts, and utilize quarter horses as their primary mode of managing cattle in a time where 4x4s have taken over. On this day in 1948, the predecessor to the was formed in San Angelo, Texas. Women had been competing in rodeo since its inception, but lacked a formal organization. More than 200 years ago today, Swante Magnus Swenson was born in Sweden. He became the father of Swedish Migration to Texas after moving to the Austin area in 1838. The SMS Ranches, comprised of 500,000+ acres across West Texas are still partially in existence today. This colonial style brick building is a part of what is left of Belair Stud, one of the oldest racehorse operations in America. Founded in Prince George’s County, Maryland, in the 1740s.

The Woodward family bought it at the end of the 19th century, subsequently producing Gallant Fox and Omaha, whom were both Triple Crown winners.

While the stable pictured here was built in 1907, it is fascinating to hear about the early days of racehorses in colonial America!

Did you know there was a “bloodless” bullring in South Texas up until 2020? The Renk Family in San Isidro held the bullfights there for decades. Unlike traditional bullfighting, where the bull is killed, the Santa Maria bullring hosted bullfights that resulted in no harm to the bovine participants. Pretty cool!

A Wild West Shows we're all the
rage across America in the late 1800s through the early 1900s. Folks back east were enthralled by the re-enactments of frontier life, battles, and hunts. Here is a picture of Pawnee Bill's Wild West show in the late 1920s!
