Hotels, schools and office buildings quickly contributed their space to the military once WWII started. Grand hotels like the Royal Hawaiian (Royal Hawaiian) and Halekulani (Halekulani Hotel) furnished places to rest and recover. Even city parks converted to war time accommodations!

The Haʻikū Stairs, also known as the Stairway to Heaven, were built by the US Navy so that workers could access the Haʻikū Radio Station at the top of Oahu's Ko'olau mountain range. There are more than 3,000 steps! They initially built a wooden stairway, but in the mid-1950s, this was largely replaced with metal steps and ramps.

Many tourists have climbed the Haʻikū Stairs over the years, even though the site closed to the public in 1987. In 2021, it was decided by the city council that the stairs would be removed.

HONOLULU (AP) — USS Arizona sailor Lou Conter lived through the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor even though his battleship exploded and sank after being pierced by aerial bombs. That makes the now 101-year-old somewhat of a celebrity, especially on the anniversary of the Dec.

Welcome to 1940’s O’ahu! Each point of interest in our new tour app includes narration and text with historical information and vintage images from the 1940s. You’ll feel as if you’ve stepped back in time, just before the start of the Pacific War.

Simply click on the map within the app for directions to the sites you want to visit. As you drive, enjoy a variety of music from the 1940s - the same music the servicemembers would have heard when out on liberty in Honolulu.
