I'm back from what has become my annual trip to Philadelphia to DJ at DJX Fusion Weekend. Spurred on by my DJ pal Kathleen Evans, this year's 2:00 AM set featured a lot of old school trip hop tunes -- music that inspired me to start a music podcast in the first place. I ended up including some newer tunes, and a bit of Prince bled into this set from my sideroom set earlier that night.

Last weekend, I got to DJ in New York City for the first time in 8 years, this time at Motley Hue 2019, a fusion dance event.

The fusion dance scene has its roots in blues dancing, and at one time fusion was considered by some to be merely "blues dancing for people who don't like blues music". As fusion has grown and evolved, the music played at fusion events has drifted musically from its blues roots to a more electronic sound. This inevitably leads some dancers to get nostalgic for the bluesier music they used to hear at dances several years ago.

So for this set, which was a lead-in a live performance by David Keogh, I decided to open with those bluesy sounds of yesteryear's dances, then slowly switched gears to a more modern sound. Then I closed with two mashups I did recently.

The response from dancers was overwhelmingly positive, which made this one of the most gratifying experiences I've ever had as a DJ. Enjoy this live recording of that set.

One of the great things about going to an event like DJX Fusion Weekend is that all the DJs pick up new music from each other and then play all that music for their dance scenes at home. Last weekend, I got to spin some late night tunes at DJX Fusion Weekend in Philadelphia. This was my fifth time DJing this event, and it remains one of my favorite weekends of the year. It stands to reason that I couldn't walk away from this show without one last moment of Wordpress frustration.

I just noticed this morning that the 2017 Yearbook episode never made it out to the podcast feed, and I have absolutely no idea why. If there are any Wordpress gurus out there who are willing to dig around the Dave's Lounge web site and figure out why that happened, I would be most grateful.
