Wow! 2024 was just beyond bizarre. Super-highs, and unbelievably disappointing lows, but at least the music was flowing! So with that being said, here’s a playlist I compiled of new music, rediscoveries & songs forgotten, and some music that I had the pleasure to work on that ultimately kept me moving throughout the year. I should mention these are in no particular order, other than the #1 spot.

First off, thanks to for turning me onto Beak>. They slipped past me and are now a favorite, thanks dude. Also, shout outs to and for their excellent work on Black Gold’s release ‘Kintsugi’. Made my job super easy, and it’s become a favorite in our house. I also failed to mention Scrabble’s latest earlier in the year. Dan Lee gave us ‘December 68’ on his latest EP - thank you for letting me be a part of this one as it’s become my favorite single in the Scrabbel catalog! I also had the honor of remixing Daniel Kobialka’s classic ‘Blue Spirals’ last year, and the good man Chris Ryan provided the stellar cover art, thank you for your divine vision. And a major thanks to everybody that supported the Society of Rockets in 2024. Looking forward to March as we enter the hallowed halls of once more.

A Certain Ratio - The Old & The New - Factory Records

These Factory cassette boxes are becoming increasingly difficult to find, and this is the only one that I currently have in my collection. Each group/artist that received the “boxed” treatment had a specific color assigned to them. I abhor cassettes and really don’t understand why anybody would want that format today, but being a stubborn completist, I will pick these up whenever I come across them and they’re in good shape.

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings - It’s A Holiday Soul Party - Daptone

Ms. Jones’ voice is one of the greatest in soul, a treasure that we all should enjoy a bit more often. And how about the Dap-Kings? These fellas burn hard on everything they lay down to tape. Also, how about kicking off the LP with a song for our Jewish sisters and brothers? This is my favorite holiday album of all time.

The fellas at Crazy Rhythms just keep on delivering. Closing out Thanksgiving with some of the finest that Otis laid down to tape. Taken from this pale blue dot far too young at just 26 years young. Soon more Otis, it will make you feel good.

Last local classical event of the year at the McNay art museum with the effervescent Agarita! While I have a handful more in Austin and Seguin, this is it for SA. SA is incredibly lucky to have classical music organizations that give so much to the community. Concerts, educational events and more help keep the arts alive and in motion. I do hope to see some of you next year at a few events.

Music-centric caption for the win.

My mom had a Pinto from about 77-84. Seats were vinyl, and they cracked from the Texas heat in less than a summer. Also, the 70s era was all short-shorts, all inclusive. When that flimsy, tenuous vinyl would hit max heat, those seats would cook the back of your thighs in an instant. That car totally sucked, but it also got me and my mom to the first three Star Wars films multiple times, so there’s that.
