It's time for , edition! ? The forest products industry operates in a complex business environment affected by numerous factors, making market behavior difficult to predict! 📈🍃 Companies in this industry constantly strive to enhance their market understanding by transforming data into valuable knowledge and insightful forecasts! In the paper titled "Forecasting models for Quebec’s lumber demand and exports using multivariate regression technique" by Mounia Ferguene, Nadia Lehoux, and Camélia Dadouchi, the authors "proposes a methodology to extract and use open data for Quebec’s lumber demand and exports forecasts using multivariate regression techniques." Some of the methods used to "estimate the models’ coefficients using a training data set" include the Ordinary Least Squares method, LASSO and RIDGE regressions, and the Two-Step Least Squares method. The forecast accuracy of the selected models was then tested on an out-of-sample dataset. The best-performing models successfully predicted Quebec's lumber demand and exports in the testing dataset, achieving a Root Mean Square Error of 0.12 and 0.08, respectively, as well as a Mean Absolute Error of 0.1 and 0.06, respectively. Moreover, the developed data visualization tool was powerful in showcasing reliable forecasts generated by the models and providing relevant insights through interactive graphics. This visualization tool holds the potential to enhance market understanding, aiding in decision-making related to the evolution of lumber demand.
