15-year-old Esther from Uganda is one of kahani’s “Girls on a Mission.” She started a reusable menstrual pad project to support other girls in her community. So far, Esther and her friends have helped more than 3,000 girls access menstrual pads and stay in school, even while they’re having their period.

What a powerful way to make sure that periods never hold girls back.

We wholeheartedly agree with National Youth Poet Laureate Alexandra Huynh!

We, at kahani, believe that every single girl has a story. And that includes YOU. The world needs to hear your stories. If you or a girl you know is interested in sharing your story in one of our next issues, check out https://www.kahani-girls.com/submit-your-story. We’re always looking for photography, writing, artwork, interviews…anything that can be printed on a page.

The world may not be ready…but we know you are.

Remember, it is ok! It’s your period, and it’s completely normal. It’s ALSO ok to be afraid of what’s happening at first—just like this girl from Laos was when she started menstruating. As she got older, things changed. “When a younger girl asked me about periods, I could explain everything to her.”

Illustrated by Lily.

These haunting lines are from a story by 18-year-old Júlia in Brazil.

A boy with a heavy heart, lost in his thoughts, meets a mysterious girl. She tells him, “Look at the stars.”

What do you think of when you gaze up at the night sky? Does it comfort you to know that the stars will always be there?

Thanks to Latin American Leadership Academy - LALA for helping us share Júlia’s work!

“Bodies are beautiful.” 13-year-old Isabella, who is from the Ponca Tribe in Nebraska—a state in the Great Plains region of the U.S. Isabella knows that all bodies are beautiful—no matter what size, shape, or color.

17-year-old Mahima wrote a story titled “In Pursuit of Never,” describing her dream of being allowed to ride a bike—and the way that this dream contradicted the social norms of her community.

“But when the Bengali aunties see me on my sweet ride and spew their daily afternoon insults, they’re muffled by the wind clogging my ears, the snapping twigs under my wheels, and the awe of the little Bengali girl next door.”

Have you ever challenged cultural norms to pursue a dream?

In a moving poem, 15 year old, Lerato from South Africa shared the pains of having her period every month. Beyond the physical pains of menstruating, she talks about the social stigmas of how others “say I’m pretending its not hurting” when she simply keeps “quiet because they don’t know what I’m facing.”

Thank you to Imagine Scholar for helping us share Lerato’s story!

Period buddies, a program at the Arlington Academy of Hope in Buddha, Uganda, uses a buddy system to match girls who have not started their periods with girls who have. Buddies can share their experiences with their periods, what to expect, and how to take care of yourself. It always helps to have a buddy to talk to about any and all concerns about their periods!

“i don’t know
whether to grieve when the blood comes or celebrate
that my starving body …
can still produce it.”

Poet, sebastian is a transgender young man who wrote a powerful poem about his experience as a man who gets his period.

What does it mean to be transgender?
As sebastian says, it means he is “a transgender man which means i was assigned female at birth, but identify as a man, not as a woman.”

Thank you to I AM: Projects for helping us share sebastian’s story!

“Let’s live, and with chaos make something beautiful.”

Where does beauty come from? For 19-year-old Emina from Serbia, beauty comes from chaos. In this stunning art piece, Emina brings together: “Chaos. Beauty. Hope. Concern. Happiness. Peace.” The result is mesmerizing.

Where do YOU think beauty comes from? Comment below and tell us!

And speaking of “embodiment of power,” 16-year-old Béatrice from Democratic Republic of Congo shares a poem about “La Puissance de la Femme,” or “The Power of a Woman.” How would it feel to sit “on the lion’s throne?” Women – and girls – have power beyond measure. How will you use YOUR power in the world?

Thank you to Malaika for helping us share Béatrice’s story!

We are not “impure,”
We are not “cursed,”
We are the embodiment of power!

We love these lines from the incredible poem that 18-year-old Eira from India shared with us for “Our Period” issue of kahani. There are so many myths out there about menstruation—one is that it makes girls “dirty” or “impure.” Eira believes it makes girls exactly the opposite! It’s time to take back the narrative…and break the silence.

Happy Earth Day!!!

Since the future health of our planet is so important to the youth of the world, our next issue is called "Our Planet Issue" where girls from all over share their stories about climate change, the environment & what they are doing to save the planet they will one day inherent.

The cover story for the issue features Leah, an 17-year-old from Uganda, who is planting 21 million trees by the time she turns 21, cleaning up the plastic in her country & striking from school once a week to call attention to the climate change issues plaguing the globe. We can't wait to share her full story with you!!!

19-year-old Karla is originally from Mexico, but lives now in Arizona as a “Dreamer”—someone who was brought to the United States as a child by her parents or caregiver, but is not recognized by the government to live there. In this powerful poem, Karla expresses what it feels like to not feel welcome in the only place she has ever called home.

Thanks to Aliento for helping us share Karla’s story!

No, it’s not! A teenage girl from Ghana tells the story of her first period in the latest issue of kahani. And she’s not the only one–girls from Laos, Pakistan, Ethiopia, and the United States all share what it was like for them to menstruate for the first time. And they all agree–your period is not a disease!

Illustration by 16-year-old Lily from the United States.

Speaking of a different perspective, 18-year-old Valentina from Mexico shares hers on menstruation, and encourages YOU to do the same. That’s what Our Period Issue is all about—thinking in a new way about something that is completely and totally natural: Your period.

Here’s the phrase that Valentina would like to leave you with: “We are not crazy, we are cyclical.”

(And in case you’re interested, go to Resonancia Femenina to check out some of the resources that helped Valentina learn about her cycle!)

Thanks to Latin American Leadership Academy - LALA for helping us share Valentina’s story!

Powerful lines of poetry from Sheryka in Brooklyn, New York in our latest issue of kahani. For many girls around the world, even their daily existence is a form of resistance. From fighting racism to protesting climate change, girls are ready to remake the world into a place where everyone feels at home.

Thanks to Smile On Me for helping us share Sheryka’s story in Our Period Issue.

Soy muchas cosas
I’m a bunch of things

And we bet you are too! Detiny–a kahani contributor from the Dominican Republic–isn’t just one thing. She’s an artist, an activist, a dancer, a student. And a bilingual speaker! This bunch of things make her uniquely Detiny.

What is the bunch of things that make up YOU?

Thanks to Latin American Leadership Academy - LALA for helping us share Detiny's story in Our Period Issue.

What would you do, if you could go back in time? Would you change the past? Would you chart yourself a different future?

In her poem, published in partnership with the Indigenous Adolescent Girls Empowerment Network, 16-year-old Tehya Grace explores time, memory and regret. Ultimately, she decides that “now is better than then.” What do you think? Add your comment below…
