ACTING PRESIDENT COMMEND TEACHERS

His Excellency the Acting President Mr Slumber Tsogwane has commended teachers for the great work they are doing in the building of the country’s human capital. Acting President Tsogwane said this yesterday at the on-going Botswana Teachers Union (BTU) Congress of Delegates held in Palapye.

He said education plays a central role in shaping and transforming Botswana’s human capital. The Acting President therefore acknowledged the need to capacitate and empower educators saying educational transformation cannot be achieved without this.

“The shift we need in our approach to education and skills development requires that we take a fresh look at how well we invest in our educators. Government recognises that educators must be sufficiently resourced to provide relevant and high-quality education to learners,” he said.

However, Acting President Tsogwane said government cannot be a sole bearer and sponsor of all processes of human capital formation. He therefore called on all stakeholders to come together through an appropriate model of Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) to vigorously implement the creation of human capital in the country.

The Acting President said government is aware of issues of concern to teachers saying they are duly attended to. He assured teachers that the recent reorganization of Government portfolios is premised on aligning implementation of government mandate and budgetary allocations to address a number of concerns that affects them and all other public servants.

The BTU Congress is held under the theme: Empowering Educators; Building Globally Competitive Human Capital for the Nation.

LOVEMORE SITHOLE REMANDED IN CUSTODY PENDING INVESTIGATIONS ON TLOTSO KAREMA MURDER CASE

Lovemore Sithole has been remanded in custody pending investigations on the murder of his stepson, Tlotso Karema.

The state submitted that if released on bail, Sithole could interfere with investigations, adding that his life could also be in danger because the case has caused public outcry.

In court Sithole had requested a Shona translator as he was not comfortable speaking in Setswana.

Sithole has so far been charged with one count of murder.

Lobatse Magistrate Kaveri Kapeko has postponed the case to July 27th for status hearing.

South African police say they have arrested two suspects in connection with the tavern shootings over the weekend that left a total of 19 people dead.

Fifteen people were shot dead in a bar in Soweto and four others in another bar in Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal, but police do not think the incidents are related.

The announcement of the arrests came as the minister for police, Bheki Cele, on Monday received a report on the mass shootings.

In a statement, the police assured that the arrest of the two linked to the Pietermaritzburg shooting was “a first step of bringing to book all those who orchestrated one of the country's bloodiest weekends”.

The police said that some of its response team had been deployed to Soweto to assist with policing in response to the needs of the community.

It comes amid pressure for the authorities to find those responsible for the killings, with the police being blamed for not doing enough to protect the citizens.

The country has one of the highest crimes rates in the world.

Thirteen people have been shot dead at a tavern in Soweto.

Four others are in critical condition in hospital.

Gauteng Police Commissioner Elias Mawela said the incident happened in the early hours of Sunday morning.

"Primary investigations suggest the people were enjoying themselves in the tavern," he said.

"They just came in and shot at them randomly."

Mawela said detectives are on the scene.

"The age range is just an estimation from my detectives to say they are between 19 and 35 years."

The mass funeral for 21 teenagers who died in mysterious circumstances at a South African nightclub more than a week ago is due to take place on Wednesday.

The funeral ceremony for the teenagers aged between 13-17 will be held in a giant tent at Scenery Park, in East London.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and government officials, friends, relatives and pupils are among about 3,000 people who are expected to attend.

No official cause has yet been released for the deaths of the teenagers who were reportedly celebrating the end of their exams.

Experts have said initial results showed that the teenagers inhaled or ingested something that led to their deaths, but the toxicology report is yet to be finalised.

The tragedy has prompted a review of nightclub licences and premises in East London, and the Enyobeni tavern, where the bodies were found, has been closed.
