Two years ago today I set off on my 2,637 mile thru hike of the Appalachian Mountains ⛰️🥾. This April (thanks to the most supportive wife and family in the world ❤️) I’ll be attempting a thru hike of the 2,655 mile . Looking forward to this adventure and challenge! Training is going well and I’m hoping my body will hold up to all the challenges I will face along the way 😁

Sheltowee Trace: Day 21/Mile 312. Just over a day left. Tonight’s low calling for 19 - found the warmest camp spot on the Sheltowee - a heated bathroom 😂. Last night we stayed at the Cherit Creek Lodge - a nice rustic lodge and property that serves dinner and breakfast.

Sheltowee Trace: Day 15 / Mile 242. Happy Thanksgiving 🦃 from Whitley City, KY 🦃. Some pictures from the last 4 days. We passed through the Cumberland Falls State Park area and went through some nice gorge areas. A big thank you to Kay who gave us a ride to a Family Dollar and took us to the motel (Big South Fork Motel Lodge) where we are taking the day off. Kay’s kindness was a big help otherwise we would have been doing more road walking. The past 100+ miles is making me more fatigue than I would like - we are extending the hike a couple days to allow us to cut back on the daily mileage.

Sheltowee Trace Trail: Day 11/Mile 183. Yesterday we passed the 1/2 way point. The past few days the trail followed ATV trails, gravel roads, and highways. We picked up a resupply at a truck stop, which will get us to the town of Whitley City, KY.

Sheltowee Trace Trail: Day 7/Mile 103. A huge thank you to the Wall’s family for setting us up with accommodations at the Lago Linda Hideaway🙏😁. We took our only zero (day off) and 2 nights in a cabin. Tomorrow we get back on trail starting with a 15.5 mile road walk section. The Natural Bridge State Park was a highlight of this hike.

Sheltowee Trace Trail: Day 4 made it to mile 69.4. A few pictures from the first few days. The northern section of the trail is in a severe drought - carrying 3 to 5 litres of water at a time to keep hydrated. National Park Service personnel has been brought in from Utah to keep watch due to high fire danger alert. Up for tomorrow is Natural Bridge State Park.

I spent 3 days on the Wapack Trail in Southern New Hampshire doing a yo-yo (48 miles). Three days of hiking through rain 🌧️ 😁. Nice fun short trail!

The trail passes through Miller State Park - the oldest state park in NH. On a clear day you can see the Boston skyline.

Windblown XC Skiing offers 3 shelters on this trail ($30/night). One of the shelters has a wood burning fire stove for those cold nights.

The southern terminus connects with the Massachusetts Midstate Trail that goes from RI to NH.

Hiked up Mount Cardigan a few days ago. Ran into a crew that is doing work on the fire tower. Trails to the summit were periodically closed earlier in the summer while helicopters delivered supplies. The granite slabs make for a fun climb.

I think it’s time to move south 😂. 38” of fresh snow and it’s still coming down pretty good! For all the early NOBO’s you might want to slow down 😂. All this late snow I’d expect it’s going to be one muddy year in VT and rest of New England. Happy Trails 🥾

18/02/2023

A year ago today I set off from Flagg Mountain to attempt a 2,600+ mile thru hike (Pinhoti > BMT > AT).  Having Covid a month before I started and starting out with achilles pain I was a little unsure if I would make it.  It was an amazing journey and the person that returned home was not the same person that left --- I gained so much more than I ever thought possible!  Fortunately my worst fear never came to pass – I was very worried I would suffer from the “post trail depression” that so many people experience once the thru hike is over.  I was just so extremely grateful to return home and felt overwhelmed with complete gratitude that I had the opportunity to embark on this journey and grateful for the support of family, friends, and followers.

I learned so much about myself and today I am a more patient, confident, and happy person than the person I was a year ago.  I look forward to future adventures whatever they may be.

I wish the AT Class of 2023 and everyone that will be attempting a thru hike this year the best of luck – enjoy every moment of the journey!  Never give up and keep pushing until the very end – all the pain and misery you will endure is worth it!

A new fanny/chest pack 😁. Thanks to for working with me on this custom chest pack - perfect design! In the winter I like to carry a chest pack to shield my electronics and snacks from the cold. They put in 2 pockets on the inside so I can slide in hand warmers to keep my electronics and snacks from freezing. The back has 2 loops to run my sternum strap through. Fits my GoPro, spare gloves, snacks, phone, and room left over 😁. They surprised me with the custom patch on the front represeting how many miles I thru hiked this year. Thanks 👍
