I'm happy to share a few more recent moments with you as part of our ongoing efforts to chronicle what may well be the earliest spring in the region yet. Be sure to share what signs of spring you've discovered in your area in the replies. I captured this serene evening serenade of peepers in our holler on February 23. Important op-ed from President of the National Black Lung Association Gary Hairston. A reminder that coal comes with a heavy price.

"I can’t work in the mines anymore, but I’ve got my brothers and sisters in the association, and I’ll work so that others don’t have to go through what I’ve been through."

Like most everyone with roots in southern West Virginia, coal has been a big part of my life.

There are better ways forward, and we deserve the chance to thrive.
""Policies that strengthen families are critical infrastructure for our nation. These policies are key to the economic recovery of families and, by extension, our state and nation."

Mountaineer Food Bank is close to being able to claim these matching funds. Help them reach the finish line if you can! No amount too small, and shares are appreciated.❤

On October 30, 2020, Mountaineer Food Bank partnered with The Antero Foundation to raise funds to feed West Virginia’s hungry. The foundation agreed to match up to $150,000 for a grand total of $300,000 (3,000,000 meals). As of today, we’ve raised almost $133,000, but we still need your help to raise the additional $17,000.

With the COVID-19 pandemic still in full force, West Virginians are relying on emergency food sources more than ever before. Every dollar helps Mountaineer Food Bank provide meals to those who need it most. Will you help us help them today?

Check out this great funding opportunity for Black artists/organizers across the south!

Are you an organizer in the South using art and activism against injustice? Apply for funding for your project through the We Shall Overcome Fund!

The fund awards grants of up to $2,000 to nurture grassroots efforts within Black communities to use art and activism against injustice, supporting organizing in the South at the nexus of culture and social change. The deadline to apply is Feb. 1.

"We Shall Overcome" served as the theme song of the Civil Rights Movement and is now a worldwide anthem for freedom and justice. Since 1966, Highlander Research and Education Center has administered the We Shall Overcome Fund, which is generated by royalties from the commercial use of the song "We Shall Overcome."

Because of the song's history and use in the primarily southern-based struggle against racism and injustice, Black communities must benefit from Fund-supported projects. Requests are accepted from Alabama, Arkansas, D.C., Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia.

Throughout Appalachia, there are many dangerous coal-waste embankments and underground pools of mine water. Just think if these sites were transformed into compost centers, processing waste into marketable, high-quality soil to be sold to the local community.

The West Run watershed of Monongalia County in West Virginia has multiple former coal sites that West Virginia University is using to create high-quality compost. Partners include Coalfield Development Corporation, WVU Davis College of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Design, and WVU Sustainability.

This is just one of many projects envisioned by local leaders who have long sought federal investment to repurpose old coal sites into new projects. Now, with the Covid-economic crisis hitting already vulnerable Appalachian communities especially hard, the need for immediate investment is more urgent than ever.

Did you know: The industrial sector uses a third of the energy in Appalachia. Our white paper, "Growing Clean and Efficient Manufacturing," details the priorities for investments in manufacturing that should be an essential part of an economic stimulus as well as reducing the region’s carbon emissions. The Ohio Valley region could become the hub of the next generation's products, including electric vehicles, energy storage, and alternatives to single-use plastic.
