ACHIEVING AWESOME COMMUNICATION IN MARRIAGE
Often the assumptions we make about each other are harsh and untrue. We love to assume the best about ourselves and the worst about others. We judge others by their behavior and ourselves by our best intentions. Assuming things about your spouse will set you up for miscommunication and misunderstanding.
Invite the Holy Spirit to convict you of any unfair assumptions you’ve been making about your spouse.
Write your assumptions down. At the end of the day confess them to your spouse. Let them know you want to do better and that moving forward, you want to start assuming the best about them.
Clarifying questions can be a great tool to overcome assumptions. Ask questions like: “Why did you do that?”, “Help me understand”, “Here is what I hear you saying (insert what you think they are saying). Is that what you’re trying to say? I want to understand.”
Read:
“Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.”
Matthew 7:1-5 KJV
