Kyle and his now fiancée Sam (congrats to you two) celebrate with the Sneaky Moose team after Kyle captured a hard-fought podium at the Spec Miata 2025 SCCA Runoffs.

This is probably one of my favorite photos I've taken. I was really excited to be brought on board with Sneaky Moose to shoot for them at the 2025 CAT Majors, June Sprints, and the Runoffs. I think it was less about trying to create a story, but just trying to capture the moments, the hugs, the tears, and the smiles.

So far all my clients have been Mazda related in one way or another mostly Spec Miata, SMX, NC T4s, or a Formula Enterprise cars.

That'll change this year though, a client lined up in the Midwest Truck Series, and a Late Model driver. Excited to learn about the oval side of racing, and expanding my portfolio in 2026.

When the majority of your clients are Spec Miata and SMX drivers.

You tend to have a looooooot of SM/SMX photos.

It was a blast to shoot for Sneaky Moose and to follow their journey to the 2025 Run-Offs Podium. I remember asking them who the previous photographer was, and when I found out who it was, I told them that I wasn't that guy yet.

Big shoes to fill, but actually geeked, I'm kind of following in his footsteps.

A few lessons from 2025

🟢Sometimes you shouldn’t bring your camera with you and just be a fan again. I enjoyed just walking around Road America with friends and family as opposed to running off by myself to grab shots, or having them wait for me to choose when to move to the next spot. Just hanging out on the track was an amazing refresher.

🟢It is okay to seek inspiration by looking at other’s work, but don’t compare yourself as that can be a dangerous road.

🟢Take photos of people more, people are emotions, and racing is emotions.

🟢Ask help from other photographers, there is a great community, and I appreciate them for the advice. Even if it is just being worried that “I am not good enough” and helping stuff those feelings.

🟢Try to get out of your comfort zone, try different shots, different settings, and different editing styles.

🟢Care about what the client wants, and not what some random person thinks.

A spotlight on one of the drivers of the 2025 MX-5 Cup Shootout Finalists. Samantha Silver.

I had the pleasure of working with Sam both on track (staying out of her way) and off the track, both in terms of video, photography, and, along with her awesome boyfriend, Kyle Greenhill (2025 Runoffs SM Podium winner), giving me help on how to be faster and more consistent. Her father, Craig Silver, also a driver, has been very encouraging and allowed me to lean on him for questions, too, so to say the Silver family I owe a lot is an understatement. Even so much as last year, working with Sam while she was at the Champcar race at Road America, when she was nominated last year, but unfortunately didn’t make the final cut.

Since switching to Sneaky Moose and leaving the NA platform, Sam found out the question that lingered if it was the machinery or maybe if it was her. The bad news, it was the machinery and the uncompetitive NA platform that held her back all these years, especially at the more power-hungry tracks like Road America. The good news? The pace was always there. But that never stopped the Spec Miata Brainerd track record holder, and being a consistent front runner. Much of the year has been spent learning a new NB Miata platform, and even more so undoing years of NA Miata habits. I’m excited to see her progress in 2026, and even more so if Sam wins the shootout in an MX-5 Cup car.

Both Sam and Kyle exemplify the motto Sam has especially lived by. “If racing is to continue, we need everyone.”
