James Madison Nabrit, Jr.
While at Morehouse College, Nabrit was initiated into Eta Chapter of , and then became a charter member of Psi Chapter in 1922, serving as the chapter’s first Keeper of Seals. He graduated in 1923.
He then attended Northwestern University School of Law (), where he became the first African American to be senior editor of the Illinois Law Review, to serve on the editorial staff of the Northwestern Law Review, and to serve on the house committee at Northwestern. While as a student there, he also became a charter member of Iota Chapter (.ques) in 1923. He graduated law school in 1927.
After law school, he would serve as counsel on several civil rights cases, many of which were with the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund (). One of his most notable cases was Bolling v. Sharpe, which desegregated schools in the District of Columbia. This case was the precursor to Brown v. Board of Education, and both cases were won on the same day. (As seen in the second photo)
In 1958, he became the Dean of Howard University’s School of Law (). Two years later, he became the second Black president of Howard University (), serving from 1960 to 1965 and again from 1968 to 1969.
