Always been a fan of David Bennett's videos - definitely worth a watch!
There's a coincidence! - I mentioned this back in September, probably the most common chord progression in pop music!
Famously featured in a comedy sketch by Australian band Axis of Awesome
Enjoy!

There’s nothing like a genuine analog chorus for delivering the lush, rich sound adored by so many bass players. The Ampeg Liquifier is as good as it gets, with Rate, Depth, and Effect Level controls that coax the most from the pedal’s dual-chorus design.

Another page from my forthcoming book - Creative Scales for Bass - still very much a work in progress!

The double harmonic major scale, also known as the Gypsy major scale has a distinctly Eastern flavour to it - one of my all time favourite sounding scales, I wrote my first original bass line with this many years ago.

An interesting scale to experiment and improvise with!

Enjoy!

6 Ways to play 8th notes

(Return of the Bass Player's Friend)

Still on the subject of rhythm and damping/muting - here is a useful, but simple exercise that is great for focusing on damping/muting.

But more importantly, it shows you how slight changes in 8th note duration alters the feel of a bass line - For instance, the difference between "With or Without You" (Tenuto) and "I Wish" (staccato) - "If You Want Me to Stay" (long-short) and "Travelling Without Moving" (short-long, octave parts) - "Horse With No Name" (swing rhythm) and "Roadhouse Blues" (shuffle rhythm).

By the way - the pattern here is Root, 5th, flat 7th, octave - as featured in the previous article, "The Bass Player's Friend"

Picking Hand Techniques

The picking hand in bass playing has several very important jobs – it is the powerhouse that controls tone production (timbre, or sound quality), tempo (beat / speed / time keeping), dynamic level (how loud or soft you are playing) and rhythm (how the beat is divided).

It is a bass player’s picking hand that will give the player their individual sound, whether they use fingers, a pick, or slap technique.

It is mostly a bass player’s picking hand that allows you to hear the timbral, or tone differences between players such as Jaco Pastorius and Stanley Clarke, or Mick Karn and Bernard Edwards.

There are of course differences in instruments, amps or effects that makes one bass player sound different from another, but a great deal of a bass players sound quality is dependent upon how the picking hand and fingers, or plectrum are used.

Similar to the circle of 4ths, or the circle of 5ths (which gives you 12 notes of the chromatic scale), you can arrange the diatonic major scale music alphabet into 3rds (every third note) CDEFGABC becomes the 3rds alphabet - CEGBDFAC.

With this you can work out triads on every note - CEG, EGB, GBD, BDF etc., this is a good memory aid - which can be extended to include 7ths.

You can do the same with 6ths (every sixth note) CDEFGABC becomes CAFDBGEC - notice this is the 3rds alphabet backwards (a 3rd inverted becomes a 6th)!

The 6ths alphabet is a useful memory aid to tell you the natural minor note name of any major key, e.g., C major = A minor, A major = F # minor, F major = D minor etc.

All The Things You Are chord progression -

One of my favourite chord progressions - some interesting modulations in this classic Jazz Standard

These chords sound best played above the 12th fret -
(apart from the E flat major and dominant chords - fret 11)

4th finger dexterity – you will notice that all the chords use only the 1st, 2nd and 3rd fingers of the fretting hand – thereby leaving the 4th finger free to employ hammer ons, pull offs, and extended stretches and intervals against the chords themselves – think Joe Pass – This can really add to the chord’s potential to add something new to your playing.

Chords can be arpeggiated, strummed, or all notes played simultaneously with the 1st, 2nd and 3rd finger of the picking hand – thus extending their harmonic and rhythmic possibilities endlessly.

Enjoy!

Adding a bit of spice to the minor pentatonic scale with chromatic approach notes and enclosures -

The minor pentatonic scale is one of the most widely used scales in many music genres - the use of this scale can be made a bit more colourful (the Greek word for colour is chroma, hence the term chromatic) by introducing chromatic approach notes, or enclosures (surrounding the target notes of the scale with chromatic approach notes, either above or below the desired pitch).

Adding a chromatic approach note either below, or above the desired target note when using the minor pentatonic scale can make the creation and construction of original bass-lines a bit more interesting by adding a bit of tension, or interest to line - the same goes for creating more interesting solos, or improvisations.

This can lead the way to more interesting bass line creation, or solo/improvisatory applications by adding a bit of tension, or interest to this widely used scale.

Developing a Light Touch – Using dead notes exclusively!

It seems fitting to look at a few ways to develop a lighter touch to playing – Don’t grip the neck so hard and just play the music! – That would seem the obvious answer, but is there more to it than that?
Because when the music is being played, subtleties such a fretting and picking finger pressure can slip into the background, as the attention can be focused on more demanding aspects of playing, especially when performing live.
So perhaps practicing an exercise that focuses on fretting and picking pressure itself might be beneficial?
As this is more likely to make an impact on motor, tactile and kinaesthetic memory, placing the lighter touch into the subconscious.
The first suggestion is simply discovering the feel of minimum fretting pressure.
The second suggests playing normally, e.g., scales, arpeggios bass-line, melodies etc. but without pushing down on the strings with enough pressure to fret the note (stop the note on the fingerboard – fretless) – so you are only playing with dead notes, your fingers still moving on, or across the strings creating the normal patterns.
The last looks at picking hand dynamics, that can also lead to a lighter touch.
Hope you find this useful!
