New Called to be Bad Podcast episode!! I know I say, every week, that I am excited for you to experience the new episode–but this is probably one the episodes I am the MOST excited for you to hear or watch (if you watch you will get to see Marg in full drag, which is so worth it, she looks amazing).

On this week’s episode of Called to be Bad, I talk with the Theology Queen, Marge Erin Johnson https://www.instagram.com/theology.queen/ who is a minister, entrepreneur and drag queen. You can read her full bio and see all of her socials in the podcast/youtube description.

Marge unravels what is Drag, what is Drag church, how/why she started drag during seminary, how drag can be spiritually healing, and why she doesn’t need to reconcile drag with her faith (and why you don’t either).

New episode!

In this episode of Called to Be Bad I talk with Sarah Werner. Sarah is an editor, writer and pastor living in Columbus, Ohio. You can find Sarah’s full bio in the description. Sarah is the author of the book, Rooted Faith: Practices of Living Well on a Fragile Planet. In this episode we discuss Sarah’s book, in particular the idea of Animism and how it relates to the Christian faith. We talk about how all of creation is alive, including rocks! And how connecting and respecting everything wild around us–is both biblical and beneficial to our daily lives. There is lots of talk of squirrels, birds, and of course chickens. There is special mention of divine pigeons, so watch out for that.

New Episode!

Today’s episode is co-hosted with Dr. Malinda Elizabeth Berry who you may recognize from an episode of Called to be Bad named Toxic Secrets.

Dr. Malinda and I had the privilege of hearing Rev. Dr. Wil Gafney speak on her prolific work in the world of Bible translation using gender expansive language.

Rev. Dr Wil Gafney is the author of A Women’s Lectionary for the Whole Church Years A and B and,Year W, a stand alone volume (Church House Publishing), Volume C of the Lectionary is due in 2024–i believe in July–this month actually. Good timing.

Womanist Midrash: A Reintroduction to the Women of the Torah and the Throne (Westminster/John Knox), a commentary on Nahum, Habakkuk and Zephaniah for the Liturgical Press Wisdom series, Daughters of Miriam: Women Prophets in Ancient Israel

You will find her full bio on her website:

In this episode of Called to be Bad I talk with Darryl Heller and Ben Bouwman about reparations. Darryl is professor of women and gender studies at Indiana University South Bend and is the director of the South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center. Ben pastors at Walnut Hill Mennonite Church in Goshen, Indiana.

Darryl and Ben provide definitions for reparations and Darryl talks about how reparations is a process, not a one-time-event. We discuss biblical models of reparations and how learning history is key to prevent future harm.

I just posted on Patreon a short video mom and I filmed this summer when we were at Rachel Hadley Stolpe ‘s block party/concert. I had a booth for the podcast and mom was helping me do a sound/video check. I wish it was an hour long, not just a minute. Anyway, it’s up for those who are patrons, I hope you enjoy this little gift I stumbled upon. Also, new episode tomorrow! Finally.

Everyone deals with pain differently. ADHD hyper fixation/ Rachel Hadley Stolpe gifted (cursed?) me with crochet as a coping mechanism.

This means while mom is on hospice care I am obsessively crocheting heartache into cute lil guys. And hats. And scarves. And prayer shawls.
All I know is it helps somehow.

People keep asking how I am doing. I don’t know??? My heart is breaking. Nothing is normal. I don’t cry when I “should” cry and then I weep randomly when I don’t want to. And we also laugh a lot. Animals still make me happy. I miss the podcast and work but I wouldn’t give up this time together for anything. Joy and loss all mingle together.

We are overwhelmed by the support of our community. Particularly those who have given meals, donated to the gofundme, and the wound care nurses who have volunteered to come on their free time, every day, to change mom’s dressing. It means the world.

Well. I guess it’s time. I have been putting off this post. Not sure why. Maybe because it is hard. Maybe because it feels obligatory but also like trauma-dumping. Well, if you would like a long-winded update on my mom’s health, my family, and work then keep reading.

My mom had been “on a journey” (her words) with cancer for the last two years or so. Two years ago in March they found a tumor in the upper lobe of her right lung. Her symptoms were a persistent, unproductive cough and low grade fevers in the evenings. They diagnosed it as non-cancerous and called it a “pseudo neoplasm of the lung”. They removed it and we all thought that was the end of it.

However the tumor kept coming back (which was supposed to be statistically improbable). It showed up in her abdomen and then in her upper shoulder/neck. They removed both (several months apart) and began “targeted therapy” medications. Eventually they started calling it an “Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor or IMT with an ALK Marker (a rare sarcoma)”

Then she began to have symptoms which would indicate neuro issues. (Her one eye wasn’t tracking, slurred speech, and difficulty walking—like shuffle walking). They found a tumor on her brain stem and then two others in her brain.

She has had two rounds of radiation. Radiation and meds seem to be working on the brain tumors. Her neck tumor has been resistant to both. Her tumor on her shoulder is an open wound due to necrotic tumor/liquid coming out of the skin—plus radiation keeps that area from healing. Cancer is not pretty friends.

We take things day-by-day, trying to manage pain and wound care. The biggest worry is infection.

Nick, Sierra, her boyfriend (also named Nick haha), and I came to Colorado to celebrate the new year. I decided to stay to be present and care for mom.

I don’t have a plan to come back to Indiana as of now. How do you make that kind of decision? Faith Mennonite Church has been incredibly supportive and I feel extremely privileged to have a work situation that allows me this time.

If you follow the Called to be Bad Podcast you will have noticed no new episodes. I will resume the podcast when I return to Indiana—whenever that is.

If you would like to support my mom/family, here is a link to a gofundme page:

Also, I want to pay tribute to our lovely family dog Kia who finished her journey in our lives at the age of 17. Run free Kia girl. We miss you. 🐾

Thanks for your love and support and care. It means a lot.
Love,
Mariah

Shantell Hinton Hill is an engineer, pastor, and poet that centers her justice work around Black Feminism(s) and Womanism.

✨She tells stories of finding her voice and the way black women in her life have uplifted, empowered, and resurrected her. Now it is her goal to live out this empowering work and way of life.

✨Shantell connects this work with the women of the Bible who were unnamed, voiceless, yet acted in faith and power. She describes how Black feminism(s) and Womanism point out the way intersectional oppressions may be operating throughout scripture.

✨We hear one of her breathtaking poems from her book, “Black girl magic and other elixirs,” which problematizes how Christians think of suffering, death, and crucifixion.

✨We finish by hearing about the voices who have shaped Shantell’s Black feminism(s), her faith, and her writing, as well as encouragement for those who don’t know what to do with their faith in the face of all the suffering in our world. Check it out! Send it to a friend!

Good morning baddies and happy
I am on my way to Colorado to be with family and you all have TWO new episodes live and ready to dive into. They are called, “Are Guns Bad” and they are a long and thorough dissection of the gun problem in our country. My guest is Matthew Yoder an Anabaptist/Mennonite pastor, who is also a hunter and gun sportsman (I think that is the right term—he participates in gun competitions).

Anyway, I would love to hear your thoughts on these episodes. Do you enjoy how long they are? Are they too long? I don’t plan on doing long-form episodes like this frequently but would love to hear feedback. Also, I struggled lining up the audio and video on the YouTube version, hopefully I can figure that out in the future. Happy listening!

It's LIVE!

In this episode of Called to be Bad I talk with pastor Melissa Spolar about being part of a "bad church" a.k.a. breaking down what traditional church looks like. Do we need a sermon? Do we need lots of children's programming? Let's re-imagine church together.
