Today marks the 6th anniversary of the Militantly Mixed Podcast, and I’m filled with so many emotions trying to find the right words to express my pride in this journey and the incredible community that’s grown around it. Being the first long-running Mixed race podcast has been a remarkable feat, one I never imagined I could achieve when I first started.

Celebrating today is bittersweet amidst my grief, but I couldn’t let this day pass without acknowledging how proud and happy I am to reach this milestone. Since my husband, Tristan’s death, I’ve not been able to maintain the consistency I once had in releasing episodes. However, I hold onto hope that I’ll find my way back to this work that means so much to me.

Navigating the evolution of the show while grappling with grief has been a challenge, but it is one I am trying to work through at my current pace. I appreciate those of you that are still checking in and listening to the back catalogue until I can come back with more episodes.

To everyone out there, I hope you’re embracing your Mixed ass selves and finding the community you need to support you. Thank you for your support over these 6 years. Here’s to many more milestones and moments of connection ahead.

New Episode Alert!!!

Took me a couple of days but here are my thoughts and feelings about my experience returning home to L.A. to attend the Free To Be Fest 2024. I am so glad I went and got to see so many cousins that I love. Can't wait til next year.

I did it! I came to L.A for one night only to celebrate Mixedness with at the Free To Be Fest 2024! Got to see a lot of cousins, some I’ve only known on the innanets, some I already have been in meatspace with, and some I just met for first time yesterday. The night filled my heart! I felt as close to Old Mane as I have since my loss. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be with my Mixed family tonight. I’ll tell y’all all about it after I get some sleep. Konnichiwassup cousins,

I am still on the indefinite hiatus while I am trying to rebuild my life BUT this week I dropped not one but two mini epsiodes of Militantly Mixed. On Wednesday, I was solo and mentioned the upcoming Free To Be Fest and I thought y'all should know about it if you are in the L.A. area. And whilst I was making that recording it occurred to me I should reach out to Dr. Jenn Dr.Noble since she is the creator of the event and we are meatspace friends to chat with her about it. So, we jumped on a video call and we discussed the event and how you can participate. My friend and cousin of Militantly Mixed, Adella’s mother, Matilda passed away on February 16th after a long battle with cancer. Mattie was a woman of service, and through out her time in-treatment she took as much care as her fellow patients as she was being taken care of by bringing meals and offering comfort. In her honor, and at Matilda’s request, they have established Mattie’s Meals, to continue the work that she began during her treatment. My name is Shae, I am Sharmane's friend since college. It is with a heavy heart that I write to share the devastating news of the unexpected passing of Tristan Shawn Johnson. Tristan, born on January 2, 1978, touched the lives of many with his warmth, kindness, and unforgettable humor. Unfortunately, on November 30th, 2023, Tristan left this world far too soon while in Mexico, leaving behind his beloved wife, Sharmane, and their four Star Wars Sith Lord cats, Revan, Rain, Krayt, & Kreia, who all now face the daunting task of returning to the United States without him.

The Purpose:

We are reaching out to you today to request your support for Sharmane during this incredibly challenging time. The funds raised will be dedicated to covering the emergency medical services costs, cremation expenses, and the essential travel and moving costs for Sharmane and the cats to return to the United States.

Emergency Services and Cremation Costs:

Tristan's passing in a foreign country has presented unexpected challenges for Sharmane. The funds raised will help alleviate the financial burden of the emergency services and cremation costs required to ensure Tristan receives the respectful and dignified farewell he deserves.

Travel and Moving Expenses:

In addition to the immediate expenses, we aim to assist Sharmane in covering the costs associated with her travel back to the United States and the subsequent moving expenses. Navigating such circumstances is undoubtedly overwhelming, and we want to ensure that Sharmane can focus on healing and cherishing the memories of her Tristan. At present, my husband Jeff, is with Sharmane in Mexico assisting with the "business" aspects of Tristan's death and preparing for Sharmane's return. She will be with us when she initially returns to the U.S. until she feels ready to start her next chapter. The funds raised will go directly to Sharmane and will assist her until such time as Tristan's final affairs have been completed.

I know that most people that have regular jobs have to return to those jobs pretty quickly after a partner dies. Me being a stay-at-home podcaster I’m not sure when it make sense to return to work. But as for my latest show Matcha, Masala, & Murder was all recorded and mostly edited prior to Tristan dying, I should be telling people about our work cause this is my job and I will need to return to it soon.

Our latest episode does run long but that’s because it’s an awesome story of a possibly Mixed Race woman who’s legacy is America’s first serial killer despite the fact that it is unlikely she killed anyone at all. It’s one I’m proud to have told on the show and when I can get back to work I believe this show will grow because Rhia and I have something special here.

I don’t know how to write the words I need to write here. Last night, my Tristan died, and my love went with him. It was not easy or painless, it was horrific and I couldn’t save him.

✊🏽Militantly Mixed Stands with Palestine✊🏽

For the last week I have been sharing and elevating posts of others that are more informed than myself about the genocide of Palestinians of Gaza by the colonizing, Zionist state of Israel in my IG stories/Tik Tok on my personal, professional, and podcasts accounts. And with the exception of my brief words at the start of last week’s episodes of Militantly Mixed and the conversation I had with my co-host on BLERDcoMIXed, I haven’t found the best way to publicly express what I, Sharmane, and what Militantly Mixed, the show, needs to say.

I feel, like many, ill-equipped to dive into a larger discussion about Israel’s apartheid against Palestine but what I have failed to do is the easiest thing to do and that is to post a clear message of where I stand and what Militantly Mixed represents not just in the IG stories and that is I, unequivocally condemn Israel’s apartheid, ethnic cleansing, and genocide of Palestine and the Palestinian people. Full stop.

I condemn Zionist Israel for their crimes against humanity.

I condemn the United States and President Joe Biden for financing Israel’s apartheid, ethnic cleansing, and genocide of Palestine and the Palestinian people with American tax dollars and for vetoing the UN resolution to condemn the violence against civilians in the Israel-Hamas war.

I am watching while representatives of nations around the world that have experienced colonization, apartheid, and other atrocities at the hands of oppressors be able to stand up and declare without difficulty or waiver that they condemn the actions of Zionist Israel. I am watching normal everyday people from all over the world take to social media to declare without difficulty or waiver that they condemn the actions of Zionist Israel. But the government of the country I was born in, whom enslaved people from West and Central Africa (including my ancestors) and committed similar ethnic cleansing and genocide of our indigenous people are upholding and financing further colonization, ethnic cleansing, and genocide in Palestine. I am angry, I am horrified, and I am without the power to stop or help in a meaningful way the people of Palestine. But I will stand in solidarity with oppressed people, I will work hard to stay informed and correct misinformation as I encounter it, I will bare witness to the atrocities, and I will continue to use my voice and my platform to call for the liberation of Palestine.
