Military courts have sentenced another 60 civilians to prison terms ranging from two to 10 years for their involvement in violent attacks on military installations during nationwide riots on May 9, 2023, a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Thursday.

Today’s announcement comes less than a week after the ISPR announced that 25 civilians were handed prison terms by military courts over the May 9 events.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Wednesday directed a forensic audit of $3 billion soft loans extended to various companies and individuals during the PTI government. During the committee meeting, Governor State Bank of Pakistan Jameel Ahmed agreed to share the list of borrowers in an in-camera meeting.

The Public Accounts Committee has slammed the Ministry of Finance and State Bank of Pakistan for not providing details of 620 people who were given $3 billion loans without interest for 10 years during the corona pandemic in the PTI government’s tenure and summoned the secretary finance and governor SBP.
The PAC Chairman, Noor Alam Khan, directed the staff to also write to the chief of the army staff to appoint a representative to the investigation committee investigating the matter.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is scheduled to pay a four-day visit to Japan from July 1 to 4 at the invitation of the Japanese government.

“The Foreign Minister’s visit signals the revival of leadership level contacts with Japan after a considerable hiatus,” a spokesperson for the Foreign Office said.

Pakistan and Japan enjoy a long-standing time-tested relationship characterized by warmth, cordiality and commonality of views on issues.

During the visit, the foreign minister will hold delegation-level talks with his Japanese counterpart Yoshimasa Hayashi. He will also call on the Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, and will hold a meeting with the National Security Advisor of Japan, Takeo Akiba.
