“Words To Grow On” for Christian Ladies (31 Days): Day 8 Mon.
“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and forever. Amen” 2 Pet. 3:18.
Dear Christian Friend,
Let’s take time this week to recognize hindrances to our spiritual growth. One of our innate fleshly failings is a silly spirit of comparison and competition.
This is when we are focused more on the outward “show” than the inward “grow.” For the purpose of illustrating the point, think back to that growth chart your parents had tacked to the bedroom door when you were a child. Once a year, my dad would line us up in front of that door, shoes off, feet flat, heels back, he would lay a book on top of our heads, and draw a line. How many inches did we grow? How did that compare to last year? To our siblings? The Biblical picture of growth more closely resembles that of a plant or tree. Remember John 15? “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” We can also look at Psalm 1:1-3: “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in His law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” God has created us differently and gifted us differently. He sends experiences and trials which provide individualized opportunities for growth. He is the Holy Husbandman.
Therefore, “they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise” 2 Cor. 10:12b. The accurate measuring stick for the Christian is the Word of God.

“And how often pursuit after spiritual growth originates in the natural self perhaps only because we cannot bear the thought of falling behind or because we seek some personal gain. Bluntly stated, the doing of good is not sin but the manner, methods, or motive in such good-doing may be surfeited with our self.” (Watchman Nee)
