January can feel like an incredibly stressful month, especially during the 2nd year of a global pandemic. Having the self awareness and the courage to notice this, is the first step in self care. It's okay that you are not currently feeling your best. We all need to recharge, we all experience trauma, stress, anxiety at different times in our lives. Right now the world is trying to make up for lost time by rushing forward. Sometimes this is not the best approach. For those of you familiar with the survival expert Bear Grylls, I once read a very interesting page from his book. When you're lost in a survival situation and you don't know where to go. It is best to stop and re-trace your previous steps, before moving forward. It is detrimental to your survival to rush forward down a path out of panic or fear. I feel this can also be applied when looking at your own mind, sometimes you need to go back and track your steps again, in order to safely move forward to success.

The New Year is filled with ghost's of the past. The old memories and patterns of behaviour we've countlessly followed. The thoughts that keep us stuck in anxiety. The truth of change, is challenge. Our perception of the world is what can make or break us. This January allow yourself to be challenged, allow yourself to step into the unknown and make those little changes. You'll have to let go of the person you were before, but what if you can welcome someone better?

What is prediction anxiety? Although not an official term used by psychologists, it has popped up in discussions numerous times. Prediction anxiety or fortune telling anxiety, is the belief that a set of future events will unfold negatively exactly how they have been imagined. An example of this could be, assuming a conversation will play out in a certain way, or people will have negative assumptions about you at a party you've never been to before. This could be linked to past trauma's by using avoidance in certain situations. In reality, there are so many variables in how things will play out, we cannot predict every single event of the future. Accepting this, can be a relief to many negative thoughts. You may miss the bus for work, your clothes will be ruined by a rainy day on your way to a new job interview. Your partner breaks up with you, but what you didn't expect, was that on your journey you bumped into an old friend at the coffee shop. They bought you a drink, this then leads to an invitation to a party and many future social events. At one of those parties you meet your future husband/wife etc. Keeping an open mind in these situations is what allows us to see that life isn't constantly trying to break us, but challenge us to be better.

Have you experienced job stigma? Most of us start somewhere. We start in entry level jobs or we study or train to advance our career opportunities. Experience comes with practice, failure and the ability to learn new skills and apply them professionally. The difficulty of these jobs depends on the individual. Our range of capabilities vary, this often leads to stigma. When I was at school Teacher's often used to say 'If you don't study harder you'll be working at McDonald's', implying that, a job at McDonald's which is incredibly difficult and advance in it's own right, is somehow something to be ashamed of. This is due to the pay differences and training. If McDonald's was a high paid job with more training opportunities, people would be desperate to show off how they're employee of the month. There is also the lack of advancing in retail careers, there lacks opportunity or change. Yet isn't this similar in most career opportunities once you reach the top? I feel that in any industry you can work yourself to death, you could be earning excellent money but your mental health suffers. Any honest living should be appreciated. What job stigma have you experienced?
