Transition Principle: The Transition Principle says that an Officer must maintain the ability to transition
between hands and weapons systems, and then possibly back again to empty hand. Officers must also
use this principle to transition to a different technique if what they are doing is ineffective, being
countered by the offender, or not leading to a principle with an acceptable law enforcement outcome.
The Officer may not become so focused on any one technique or tool to the point that they do not
transition to something else if that tactic is failing. The Transition Principle includes potentially
disengaging if prior tactics failed, more resources are needed, or another more pressing threat
presents and must be addressed.

The basis of guard position will always be your ability to off balance your opponent. If you can do this all your attacks will be substantially easier and all his passing attempts substantially more difficult and risky. Learn to constantly threaten your opponents balance first and then attack second.

Draining energy: Sometimes when we get a position and attempt a move it can be rather frustrating when that move doesn’t work as planned. Don’t get upset - remember that there are two games going on here simultaneously - the obvious one is to apply a move or series of moves to completion, the other is to exhaust your opponent physically and mentally. Each time an opponent resists a move from inferior positions he gets a little more exhausted. As long as you’re winning that battle it’s ok to fail with the application of some moves. Have faith that each time an opponent resists he’s drained a little more from his batteries and there will be a threshold where he won’t be able to effectively resist the next move.

Mobility Principle: The Mobility Principle says that an Officer must maintain the ability to move. This is true on the feet and on the ground. The Officer should avoid choosing techniques that will put him/her in a bottom position or position that entangles him/her with a Subject. If an Officer gets caught in a position that limits their mobility, they should work to escape that position. This includes environmental designs that limit mobility, the clinch, takedowns, and the ground, on top or bottom. If an Officer becomes immobile for any reason, he/she must work diligently to escape that situation. Officers should also seek to limit the Subject’s mobility. Information obtained from curriculum.
