U.S. midterms: Final election results could take a week, experts and officials warn

Last-minute voters are headed to the polls across the United States Tuesday – but the results of the 2022 midterm elections may not be clear for days.

Campaign officials and political observers are warning Americans that they likely won’t know the final outcome before the end of the week.

Read more: Americans set to vote in pivotal U.S. midterms. What to look for on Election Day

The growing popularity of early voting, long a reality in the U.S. but never more so than since the COVID-19 pandemic, has complicated the counting process.

That’s producing ominous echoes of 2020 in battleground states like Pennsylvania, where polls suggest the fight for control of the Senate is coming down to the wire.

Brendan McPhillips, the campaign manager for Democratic Senate hopeful John Fetterman, is warning supporters that the final results will likely take several days.

McPhillips also says that because ballots that are cast on election day, which often favour Republicans, tend to be counted first, Fetterman’s rivals may try to declare premature victory.

“Republicans are already laying the groundwork to potentially spread false conspiracy theories about the likely ‘red mirage’ of ballot processing in Pennsylvania,” McPhillips said Monday in a note to supporters.

More than 1.4 million mail-in ballots were requested in Pennsylvania this year, he added _ 70 per cent of them by registered Democrats, compared to 20 per cent by registered Republicans.

“We expect that in-person votes will skew Republican, and that mail votes will skew heavily Democratic _ similar to how they did in 2020.”

Read more: U.S. far-right could see a midterm boost. What would that mean for Canada?

McPhillips is worried about a repeat of what happened two years ago, when a strong Republican showing early helped to fuel the impression of a GOP victory, and later Donald Trump’s claims of a stolen election.

Others, including the U.S. Department of Justice, are concerned that so-called “poll watchers” in states like Georgia, Arizona and Florida could be intent on discouraging people from exercising their right to vote.

The division of the Justice Department that monitors civil rights said Monday it would be keeping tabs on the polls in 64 counties across 24 states to ensure “compliance with federal voting rights laws.”

“Since the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the Civil Rights Division has regularly monitored elections in the field in jurisdictions around the country to protect the rights of voters,” the department said in a release.

“The Civil Rights Division will also take complaints from the public nationwide regarding possible violations of the federal voting rights laws through its call center.”

In other words, welcome to election day in the United States in 2022.

Democrats, buffeted by fierce electoral headwinds that include inflation, escalating fears of crime and a deeply unpopular president in the White House, have been leaning into what they describe as an effort to erode U.S. democracy.

“I understand that democracy might not seem like a top priority right now _ especially when you’re worried about paying the bills,” former president Barack Obama told a rally Saturday in Philadelphia.

“But when true democracy goes away _ we’ve seen throughout history, we’ve seen around the world _ when true democracy goes away, people get hurt. It has real consequences.”

Much as it was in 2020, Pennsylvania is again the centre of the North American political universe, with the neck-and-neck battle between Fetterman and Republican challenger Dr. Mehmet Oz poised to determine control of the Senate.

As Obama and Biden feted Fetterman and gubernatorial candidate Josh Shapiro, Trump himself was whipping up his own supporters in Latrobe at a rally widely seen as a preview of the former president’s own comeback bid.

He road-tested a new nickname for hard-charging rival Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, calling him “DeSanctimonious,” and all but declared he intends to run again, something the New York Times says he’ll make official before the end of the month.

Republican control of the House is widely seen as a foregone conclusion. The Senate, however, remains too close to call. And Pennsylvania is far from the only battleground that could determine the balance of power on Capitol Hill.

Trump also rallied Monday in Ohio, where venture capitalist and “Hillbilly Elegy” author J.D. Vance is vying against congressman Tim Ryan, who’s made no secret of his willingness to back the former president’s protectionist impulses.

In Arizona, Trump-adjacent Republican Kari Lake’s bid to become governor has consumed a lot of political oxygen and vaulted her onto the national stage, fuelling speculation she could end up on a presidential ticket before long.

Polls suggest Lake is nursing a narrow lead over her Democratic rival, Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs, while on the Senate side, Sen. Mark Kelly is trying to fend off a challenge from GOP hopeful Blake Masters.

Next door in Nevada, Republican Adam Laxalt has pulled ahead of incumbent Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez-Masto, although like most of the battleground Senate races, his lead remains within the typical margin of error.

And if the results of the midterms won’t be clear for several days after polls close Tuesday night, it could take even longer to determine who controls the Senate if that ends up coming down to the fight in Georgia.

There, polls suggest Sen. Raphael Warnock is deadlocked with Herschel Walker, the football hero who remains in the running despite a long list of abortion controversies, campaign exaggerations and rhetorical pratfalls.

State law in Georgia requires a run-off election in the event no one candidate secures at least 50 per cent of the vote, which seems likely given the presence of Libertarian candidate Chase Oliver on the ballot.

The run-off vote in Georgia would take place Dec. 6.

Colts’ Jim Irsay defends Jeff Saturday hire — ‘Fully capable’

Jeff Saturday shares his excitement for being the Colts’ head coach. (0:47)

INDIANAPOLIS — Colts owner Jim Irsay on Monday night vigorously defended his stunning decision to hire former Indianapolis offensive lineman Jeff Saturday as his team’s interim head coach, saying the first-time NFL coach is “fully experienced enough” and “fully capable.”

Irsay fired coach Frank Reich on Monday morning following late-night deliberations with general manager Chris Ballard on Sunday. Then, shortly afterward, the team announced the hiring of Saturday, currently an ESPN analyst. It is Saturday’s first coaching experience above the high school level.

Irsay spoke at length Monday night about the toughness Saturday displayed during 13 seasons with the Colts, with whom he made five Pro Bowls.

“Want to bet against this guy?” Irsay exclaimed. “Put your money down. [I’d] love to see it, because I know what he’s about.”

Irsay said the decision to fire Reich was difficult but attributed it to a sense of knowing it was time based on his long experience as a second-generation NFL owner.

“There’s no rule book that tells you, ‘Now you should make a change,'” Irsay said. “It’s something from being in the league 52 years. It’s intuitive.”

Irsay said the intent is to move forward with Saturday for the final eight games of the regular season, after which the Colts are expected to conduct a formal coaching search. But Irsay made no attempt to hide his preference that things work out and Saturday earn the job on a permanent basis.

“This is for eight games, hopefully more,” he said.

Irsay was pressed on whether the team will truly pursue an honest coaching search that fully complies with the Rooney Rule, which mandates that NFL teams interview at least two external minority candidates before moving forward with a head-coaching hire.

He responded adamantly, saying there would be a compliant search while also noting his hiring in 2002 of Tony Dungy, who went on to become the first Black head coach to win a Super Bowl, and his successor, Jim Caldwell, who is also Black.

As for the fate of Ballard, Irsay quickly dismissed any thoughts of parting with the sixth-year GM.

“There’s no question about that,” Irsay said. “Honestly, it’s not really even in the consciousness of my mind. … The guy’s a winner, and he’s been immensely successful.”

Ballard revealed that the Colts tried in 2019 to hire Saturday as offensive line coach and approached him about a position earlier this year, too. Neither overture resulted in him joining the staff, but the franchise has had interest going back several years in Saturday, who has been a consultant for the Colts and is close to Irsay.

Saturday, who was undrafted, leaned into his past inexperience.

“Here’s a great part about my career,” he said. “I came in, nobody expects anything. I’m here. Nobody expects anything. Hopefully it’ll go extremely well. But I have no preconceived notion that I’m gonna be some spectacular anything.”

Saturday will coach his first game Sunday on the road against the Las Vegas Raiders. He said he had not yet decided who will be his offensive playcaller but was close to making a decision Monday evening. Sam Ehlinger will continue as the starting quarterback, Saturday said.

Holger Rune produced a superb performance to beat Novak Djokovic in the Paris Masters final, which marked one of his greatest days so far in the sport. And it appears he was inspired by a pre-match discussion with his coach Patrick Mouratoglou.

The 19-year-old Dane, who appears set for a very bright future in the sport at the top of the game, saw off 21-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic in three sets after holding his nerve in the decider.

Rune overcame the former world No 1 in two hours and 32 minutes to clinch his third ATP Tour title, and he made history in the process. He became the first man to get five top-10 wins in a row during the same single-week tournament.

And he was able to achieve that remarkable feat following a frank discussion with his well-renowned coach Mouratoglou. Following the historic victory, the Frenchman spilled the beans on what was said to inspire his player to glory.

JUST IN: Wimbledon set to ditch controversial rule that forced some women to play braless

Mouratoglou told Tennis Majors: “To believe you can beat Novak in a final, when you’re 19 and you know everything that Novak has achieved and who he is, it’s very difficult.

“And today we spoke before the match and I felt he was not like the other days. I felt the pressure of playing Novak. So I came back and I said, ‘we have to speak again’. We talked about it. And I saw him back. I saw him ready. I see it on his face, he is very expressive, so I knew he was ready. The fact that we spoke about it and he convinced himself that he was able to beat Novak.

“And it was tough at the start. I think he was convinced but still when he went on that court, and with this crowd, and having Novak on the other side of the court, seeing in front of him playing the guy that he was admiring since he was a kid, I think it kind of struck him a little bit and he was a bit shy and not really fully playing in the first set.

“The beginning of the second for me was the key when he was down 0-40. The fact that he was able to save that game, gave him some extra motivation to finally find his best tennis and play the tennis to win.

“But this is impressive, to be able to believe you can beat Novak. Really believe it when you’re on the court. This is special.”

Rune showed plenty of mettle throughout. As well as early on in the second set, he produced the goods when it mattered at 5-5 in the decider – breaking the Serb to set up the biggest service game of his young career.

Djokovic would go on to create five break point chances but Rune managed to hold his nerve on each occasion. And then when the world No 10 finally had championship point after a mammoth 13 minutes into the game, he blew it via a double fault.

However, he didn’t let that get to him and after saving a sixth break point, the teenager managed to finally close the game out for arguably the biggest win of his career.

Drake, Houston lead Ravens past Saints for third straight win

38m ago

The Canadian Press

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Kenyan Drake rushed for 93 yards and two touchdowns, Justin Houston had an interception to go with his third straight multiple-sack game, and the Baltimore Ravens beat the New Orleans Saints 27-13 on Monday night.

Lamar Jackson passed for a touchdown and frustrated New Orleans (3-6) with his mobility, rushing for 82 yards and exhibiting an array of jump cuts and spin moves while helping Baltimore (6-3) win its third straight and remain atop the AFC North, one game ahead of Cincinnati.

The Saints entered the game with a chance to pull into a three-way tie atop the anemic NFC South with Atlanta and Tampa Bay. Instead, they were outclassed by a Baltimore team missing several offensive starters, including tight end Mark Andrews and running back Gus Edwards.

The Ravens converted nine of 15 third downs and had 319 total yards. The Saints were 3 of 11 on third down and finished with 243 yards. Baltimore possessed the ball for 37:47.

Andy Dalton passed for 210 yards and New Orleans’ lone touchdown to tight end Juwan Johnson, which came in when the game was virtually out of reach in the fourth quarter. Alvin Kamara was limited to 62 yards from scrimmage, his lowest output in five games.

Dalton was sacked four times and his interception came on a pass tipped by Brent Urban. The play set up Drake’s second TD.

Baltimore’s defense was stifling on New Orleans’ first four possessions, limiting the Saints to 13 combined plays.

Consequently, the stamina of New Orleans’ defense was tested as the unit contended with the elusive Jackson for 19:31 of the first half. Baltimore’s star QB didn’t let that time go to waste.

While rolling right, he found tight end Isaiah Likely running a flag pattern for a 24-yard score to make it 7-0 in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Jackson orchestrated a 12-play, 81-yard drive during which he ran for gains of 7, 16 and 12 yards. Drake capped it off by running into the end zone virtually untouched from a yard out for a 14-0 lead.

Wil Lutz got the Saints on the board with a field goal as time expired in the half — but not before Dalton overthrew open receiver Maquez Callaway in the end zone.

Jackson finished 12 of 22 passing for 133 yards without an interception.

REMEMBERING MILLS

The Saints held a halftime ceremony to honor the late linebacker Sam Mills, who was inducted posthumously into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this past summer.

Appearing on the field in gold jackets were Saints Hall of Famers Rickey Jackson, Willie Roaf and Morten Andersen, along with linebacker Pat Swilling, who was part of the famed “Dome Patrol” linebacker corps that also included Jackson, Mills, and Vaughan Johnson.

Their coach, Jim Mora, also appeared while a video montage of Mills’ Saints highlights were played on the Superdome video boards.

INJURIES

Ravens: Right tackle Morgan Moses received attention on the field during the third quarter.

Saints: Center Erik McCoy had to be helped off the field with a calf injury late in the second quarter. Pete Werner was carted to the locker room in the third quarter with an ankle injury. Defensive end Marcus Davenport left in the second half with a calf injury.

UP NEXT

Ravens: After a bye, host Carolina on Nov. 20.

Saints: Visit Pittsburgh on Sunday.

By The Numbers: McDavid set for 500th career game

13h ago

TSN.ca Staff

Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid will play in his 500th career NHL game Monday against the Washington Capitals.

The Oilers captain has had one of the most prolific starts to a career and, barring an eight-point explosion against Washington, will rank sixth all-time in points through the first 500 games of a career.

McDavid, who sits at 722 points entering Monday’s game, is eight back of former Oiler Jari Kurri, who is fifth with 730 points in his first 500 games. Wayne Gretzky remains unchallenged for the all-time mark at 1,186 points in his first 500 games.

The 25-year-old McDavid already has the most points through 500 games of any player in this millennium, having passed Sidney Crosby’s 706 points earlier this season.

*Through 499 career games played

McDavid is off to a blistering pace this season, posting 12 goals and 25 points through 12 games. The star centre, who had a career-high 44 goals and 123 points last season, is currently on pace for 82 goals and 171 points.

The two-time Hart Trophy winner is currently the league’s leader in both goals and points as the Oilers have started the season 7-5.

University of Kentucky student arrested after video shows her using racial slur and appearing to assault Black students

By Caitlin O’Kane

November 7, 2022 / 8:28 PM / CBS News

A University of Kentucky student has been arrested on multiple charges after allegedly assaulting Black students and using racial slurs. The incident was caught on video and went viral.

The video allegedly shows Sophia Rosing, who is White, using racial slurs toward a Black student, while also putting her hands on the student. She appears to try to hit the student, who holds her back and remains calm. “Can you please stop?” the student asks, avoiding Rosing’s hits.

Rosing appears to continuously call the student the n-word and a “b****.”

Another Black student is seen in the video trying to intervene. Rosing also appears to try and hit the two students with a shopping cart.

Rosing, a 22-year-old student at the college, was arrested early Sunday morning by University of Kentucky police on charges of public intoxication, assault, assault on a police officer and disorderly conduct, according to her booking information at the Fayette County Jail.

Rosing’s bond was set at $10,000 and she was ordered not to contact the victim and not to drink, reported CBS News affiliate WKYT.

In a message to students and staff, University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto said the incident occurred in one of the school’s residence halls and one of the alleged victims was a student employee working an overnight shift at the front desk.

“From my view of a video of the incident, the student worker acted with professionalism, restraint and discretion,” Capilouto said.

The incident is also being reviewed by the school.

Capilouto said the university condemns “this behavior and will not tolerate it under any circumstance” and that images in the video do not honor “our responsibilities to each other.”

“They reflect violence, which is never acceptable, and a denial of the humanity of members of our community. They do not reflect civil discourse. They are deeply antithetical to what we are and what we always want to be as a community,” he wrote.

When contacted by CBS News, the school declined to provide further comment. CBS News has also reached out to the University of Kentucky Police, Lexington Police and an attorney for Rosing and is awaiting response.

Here’s what happened today at the U.N.’s COP27 climate negotiations

International climate negotiations got underway today with dire warnings about climate-driven disasters, pleas to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and a plan for a new global weather early warning system.

The United Nations, which organizes annual climate negotiations, says about 44,000 people are attending this year’s meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. That includes leaders from hundreds of nations. They have two weeks to discuss how to dramatically cut greenhouse gas emissions, and pay for the costs of climate change.

Here’s what happened today.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres did not mince words in his opening remarks. “We are on a highway to climate hell with our foot on the accelerator,” he warned.

He also referenced the fact that the global population is expected to officially hit 8 billion people during this climate meeting. “How will we answer when baby 8-billion is old enough to ask ‘What did you do for our world, and for our planet, when you had the chance?'” Guterres asked a room full of world leaders.

There’s a new United Nations plan to warn people around the world about climate-related hazards like extreme storms and floods. It’s called Early Warning for All.

About half the world isn’t covered by multi-hazard early warning systems, which collect data about disaster risk, monitor and forecast hazardous weather, and send out emergency alerts, according to the U.N.

Coverage is worst in developing countries, which have been hit hardest by the effects of global warming.

The new plan calls for $3.1 billion to set up early-warning systems over the next five years in places that don’t already have them, beginning with the poorest and most vulnerable countries and regions. More money will be needed to maintain the warning systems longer-term.

Multiple world leaders voiced their frustration that wealthy countries, including the United States, are not paying enough for the costs of climate change. At these talks, developing countries are pushing for compensation for the damages from extreme storms and rising seas, what’s known as “loss and damage.”

The U.S. is the country most responsible for current global warming because of past greenhouse gas emissions.

The Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Amor Mottley, went one step further in her opening speech to fellow leaders. She called out corporations that profit in our fossil-fuel intensive economy, including oil and gas companies themselves.

Those corporations should help pay for the costs associated with sea level rise, stronger hurricanes, heat waves and droughts around the world, she argued, and especially in places like her nation that are extremely vulnerable to climate change and don’t have the money to protect themselves.

The performance at the end of a multi-hour session with world leaders was about 3 minutes long and told the story of global warming.

Watch it for yourself here.

The U.S. government is working with AT&T, a telecommunications company, to provide free access to data about the country’s future climate risks. The idea is to help community leaders better understand and prepare for local dangers from more extreme weather.

The Climate Risk and Resilience Portal will initially provide information about temperature, precipitation, wind and drought conditions. Additional risks such as wildfire and flooding will be added in the coming months.

“We want other organizations and communities to see where they’re potentially vulnerable to climate change and take steps to become resilient,” Charlene Lake, AT&T’s chief sustainability officer, said in a news release.

More than two dozen countries say they’ll work together to stop and reverse deforestation and land degradation by 2030 in order to fight climate change.

Chaired by the United States and Ghana, the Forest and Climate Leaders’ Partnership includes 26 countries and the European Union, which together account for more than one-third of the world’s forests.

More than 140 countries agreed at COP26 last year in Glasgow to conserve forests and other ecosystems. However, the U.N. said on Monday that not enough money is being spent to preserve forests, which capture and store carbon.

To encourage accountability, the Forest and Climate Leaders’ Partnership says it will hold annual meetings and publish progress reports.

The University of Kentucky student who was arrested for attacking a black student worker and repeatedly calling her racial slurs had “anger management” issues, a former classmate claimed to The Post.

Sophia Rosing’s behavior was exposed after the student worker, Kylah Spring, explained in a TikTok video she tried to check on the woman but was instead attacked and pelted with disgusting and racist vitriol.

A former classmate told The Post that Rosing “had some struggles with anger management because her family communicated through yelling a lot and it was often a hostile environment in her home.”

The classmate, who asked not to be named, said she was disgusted to hear Rosing, who is white, repeatedly call Spring the n-word — but Rosing “never exhibited any racist behaviors that I noticed.”

Spring said Rosing punched her multiple times, kicked her in the stomach and bit her arm while repeatedly calling her racial slurs.

“The girl starts saying things like ‘Do my chores,’ ‘It’s not my fault that you’re black,’ ‘It’s not my fault that you’re ugly,’ and at this point she’s like singing the n-word,” Spring said.

Rosing, 22, was arrested Sunday in a campus residence hall just before 4 a.m. on charges of public intoxication, assault, disorderly conduct and assault on a police officer, according to online booking info.

She pleaded not guilty to the charges Monday and a judge set her bond at $10,000.

Rosing posted a plea for forgiveness on her Instagram stories, writing, “I was under the influence I’m sorry please don’t judge me I lost everything.”

In a follow-up post, she added: “I understand a apology may not help but I am not a racist I was under the influence I lost everything literally.”

“[And] now have to have to fear for my life god forgives please understand,” she said. Rosing did not return a request for comment from The Post.

The student was an influencer with Dillard’s, which swiftly cut all ties with her following the incident.

The University of Kentucky said it a statement that “the video is deeply offensive, and we take it very seriously.”

“The university strongly condemns this behavior and will not tolerate it under any circumstance. The safety and well-being of the University of Kentucky community is our top priority,” it said Monday.

The university said its Office of Student Conduct is making an immediate review of the incident.
