Lesson 21: Godzilla: King of Monsters!

Growing up, there always seemed to be a creature feature playing in the background on Saturday afternoons. Yet somehow John has never sat down and watched the (almost) original Godzilla. Until now! Godzilla: King of Monsters! is the Americanized version of the Japanese hit, adding new scenes featuring Raymond Burr as the POV character Steve Martin. He manages to defeat Godzilla by singing about King Tut.

Lesson 15: The Flash #54 (1991)

This week has it all: colons, number signs, parenthesis, and that's just the title! Tune in to check out our comic book pick,The Flash #54 from 1991. Can Flash save the day from meta-human terrorists? Which Roman Brady is real? Do you want kowabunga-blue sunglasses or a primo-pink cap? Some of these questions will probably be answered on this week's Homework: The Podcast: Night School!

14/07/2023

Well there won't be an episode next week on account of I currently have no electricity at my house. So...listen to an old episode, I guess?

Lesson 13: Charlie's Angels (2019)

It's a new chapter, In Case You Missed It, and we're starting with a movie nearly everyone missed, 2019'a Charlie's Angels reboot. Is it unfairly maligned or does it deserve the 52% Rotten score? Why it the called the Three Musketeers if there are four of them? And where does Alvin and the Chipmunks fit into this? Tune in to find out the answers to at least some of these questions and more!

Lesson 7: The One With the Rumor

José and John watch Brad Pitt swing by an early 2000's Friends episode as a former classmate who hasn't let go of his grudge against Rachel, even though he's the one who started a transphobic rumor about her, and never faces any consiquences. That's just the sort of thing you did back then, like bullying a kid for having a dead father. The past was weird.

I was wondering if Mitchum deodorant had anything to do with Robert Mitchum, you know like Newman's Own. It doesn't! But I did just find out it's parent company, Revlon, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last year to shed 2.7 BILLION dollars in debt. Damn Revlon has a lot to...makeup.

Lesson 6: Calypso...Is Like So

José and John are joined by Dan Jacobvitz of Dan and Ian Have Questions, and he brought one of his favorite guilty pleasures. So join us in discussing Robert Mitchum's 1957 Calypso album --yes you read that right--Calypso...Is Like So. This episode is a bit long, but it's one of my favorites....so settle in with some coconut water and hit play.

José and John are back, this time with people who are normally known for one thing, but attempted to do another. We're starting things off with the first post-Connery Bond movie, 1969's On Her Majesty's Secret Service. This entry stars Australian model-turned first-time actor George Lazenby, and Kojak himself, Telly Sevalas. So put on your frilliest tux, grab you Player's club card and join us.

Also apollogies for the weird humming noise throughout, John has a new setup and there were some audio difficulties adjusting to the new system. Should be better next week.

In this episode, José and John talk about the premiere episode of The Expanse, a sci-fi series set two hundred years in the future. Humanity has spread across Earth, Mars, and far off asteroid belts that have been strip mined for ice and other commodities. Hard-boiled detective Joseph Miller, who is definitely not Alex Kamel, is assigned to find the missing daughter of a powerful CEO. Meanwhile on the Canterbury, an ice trawler harvesting ice in the rings of Saturn, second officer James Holden is asked by the ship's captain to take over as interim XO. And back on Earth, UN assistant undersecretary Chrisjen Avasarala is interrogating a suspected agent of The Outer Planets Alliance, accused of transporting illegal Martian stealth technoogy.

All this plus Disney Channel Free Weekends, the abundance of Dinosaur-themed Saturday Morning Cartoons, and since it's almost Easter, a movie about Lent. Let us know if you're a fan of The Expanse, or of early 2000s rom-coms from the makers of Bridget Jones' Diary and Notting Hill.

In this episode, José and John talk about Netflix's 2021 movie Gunpowder Milkshake, an incredibly stylized film that cribs heavily from the John Wick series, but without the world-building. Would it have been better off as a TV series? How many times can we say "Lena Headey" wrong? It's fun to find out!

Our subject this week, Sigur Rós, have a few songs using an entirely made-up language singer Jón Þór "Jónsi" Birgisson calls "Hopelandic." Hopelandic, or Vonlenska, uses the melodic and rhythmic elements of singing made up of strings of meaningless syllables, similar to scatting in jazz.

I didn't mention it in the episode, but in 1972, Italian songwriter Adriano Celentano wrote a song that was meant to sound like English in an American accent to Italian listeners, but was actually deliberately unintelligible gibberish. Celentano said he "thought that I would write a song which would only have as its theme the inability to communicate. And to do this, I had to write a song where the lyrics didn't mean anything." The name of his "American English" song? Prisencolinensinainciusol.

The song is intended to sound to its Italian audience as if it is sung in English spoken with an American accent, designed to be "Bob Dylan-esque";[1] howeve...

In this episode, José and John talk about the 1999 album Ágætis byrjun, by Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós. Apologies in advance for butchering nearly all of the names. But if you've ever wondered what the English translations were, we've got you covered. And like all discussions about Icelandic ambient post-rock, this one eventually shifts focus to Starscream's barely controlled contempt for Megatron.

End the year with our Top Gun: Maverick episode. This one zooms way past mega scrumptious! And stick around for news about what we're doing in 2023.

Welcome to our FINAL Homework: The Podcast. Sort of. We'll be switiching to a new channel next year, like when Family Matters moved to CBS and they replaced the mom. Ok hopefully not like that, but this is our last show on the Gaff Network, our home since we started this podcast. Anyway, in this one...

Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals! Check out our latest episode, about 80s holiday staple A Garfield Christmas. And join in the debate: can Jon hear Garfield?

Welcome to our FINAL Holiday Special, where we talk about A Garfield Chrismas from 1987. If you grew up in the 80s or 90s, this was a Christmas tradition. John has it on DVD! So join us as we discuss Garfield, The Ghostbusters, and the shock of Jose's life. Did you know YOU can talk to us? Crazy, ri...

We've got another Christmas one! This time we talk about A Christmas Carol from 1938 starring Reginald Owen as Scrooge, Gene and Kathleen Lockhart as the Cratchits, and their daughter June Lockhart as their daughter Belinda Cratchit. With so many adaptations, its impossible not to compare and contrast. What's you're favorite take on "A Christmas Carol?" That's right, I'm asking you to engage with this post. For Christmas.

Welcome to our second Holiday Special, about the 1938 version of A Christmas Carol, starring Reginald Owen as Scrooge. Every version has to try to make the story their own, and in this one, Bob Cratchit is FIRED after accidentally pelting Scrooge with a snowball and getting his top hat run over by a...

Only 90s kids will remember! In 1997, The once great city of New York became the one maximum security prison for the entire country. A fifty-foot containment wall was erected along the New Jersey shoreline, across the Harlem River, and down along the Brooklyn shoreline. It completely surrounded Manhattan Island. All bridges and waterways were mined. The United States Police Force, like an army, was encamped around the island. There were no guards inside the prison, only prisoners and the worlds they have made. The rules were simple: once you go in, you don't come out. Those were the days.

Yes, this week, we're talking about John Carpenter's Escape From New York. Released in 1981 but set in an even drearier 1997 than I remember, where everyone is miserable except for the eternally happy Ernest Borgnine who just loves driving his cab.

Welcome back to Lesson 15! Only 90s kids will remember! In 1997, The once great city of New York bec
